Week 12 of Marathon Training

Saturday, November 03, 2012

This was not the training week I would want, but made it through. Last week, I missed my first Half of the season due to my Stepfather being in serious condition at the hospital.

Here's how the week was SUPPOSED TO GO:
A couple of easy runs, a tempo and an interval run, end the week pacing the Savannah Rock n Roll Half Marathon today and 6 mile tempo tomorrow.

Did a tempo run on Tuesday, and a 5k today. That's it. My Stepfather took a turn for the worse and passed away on Thursday morning. So I've been with my Mom practically non-stop all week. While he had been sick, it was very unexpected. Mom's doing okay, thanks to her faith in Yahweh. There was no way I was leaving my Mom and going to Savannah, so I canceled and was able to get a Running Friend to sub for me as a pacer.

Another running friend had invited me to a local USAA Employee & Friends 5k this morning so at the last minute, I decided to go. I needed and wanted to get out there and it was 10 minutes from home. It was fun. A small race, around 300 people, but very well done. I actually won 2nd Overall Female and got a nice trophy. My friend who I went with got 3rd Overall Female. So while it probably wasn't as fun as being at the Savannah Rock n Roll, I'm happy to have stayed home near Mom and enjoyed this race.

My husband is doing a local Half tomorrow (Blue Moon) as a time trial for his upcoming marathon, and I was registered to do the 5k, but I switched to the Half and will do at least 16 miles tomorrow to get my long run in.

Week 11 of Marathon Training

Sunday, October 28, 2012

Had a great and interesting week! Had 3 easy runs ranging between 3-5 miles, an interval run and a long run. Easy runs are usually pretty easy but my 5 mile run was rough. Legs felt like lead. I've heard that usually one run a week can be rough and this was it. Thank goodness it was an easy run, went really slow. I was so proud of my interval run. Coach had me do 4-3 minute intervals at a "moderate hard" pace. Was able to do each one around 7:35 and felt great. It was definitely challenging but I enjoyed it. I've typically done my interval/speed training on the treadmill but since the weather is FINALLY cooling off, I did it outside on my street and loved it! My long run today was 17 miles. I had a great plan! Our first Half of the season is my area was today, the Halloween Halfathon, so I planned to get there at 6am, run my 4 miles then do the race and be done. Well, hubby came with me for support and I did my 3.9 miles and was ready for the Half to start in less than 10 minutes, then checked my phone and my Mom had text me that my Stepfather was in critical condition at the hospital (has heart & kidney issues), so we left and drove the hour to the hospital. Fortunately, he was stable when we got there. We stayed for a while, then went home. I figured my coach would forgive me for not doing the entire run, based on the circumstances, but I went ahead and ran in my neighborhood and did my 13.1 miles and felt great.

Finished my 3.9 in 35 minutes and my 13.1 in 1:58 so I was pretty happy to have averaged just over a 9 minute mile for a long easy run! So I got my 17 Miles in!!! Next week, I'll be pacing the Savannah Half Marathon (2:30 group) and on Sunday doing a 6 Mile Tempo run. Enjoying my training and thankful for every day.

My Stepfather is doing okay this evening, praise Yahweh. Be thankful for every day you have and never hesitate to tell the people you love that you love them. You never know when it's the last time, and you don't want to have regrets! Share love and thankfulness!

Just had to share a couple recent pics! Hubby and I went to the Rascall Flatts/Little Big Town concert this past Friday!

Tia, glad to hear that your stepfather is OK and that you STILL managed to get your run in! WTG, that is dedication!

How did you get involved with pacing? I would love to do that someday.

And you and Johnny are just too cute together! He is a handsome man!

You are a strong runner!! I didn't know you were planning on the Halloween Half. It was pretty dark at the park at 6:00 A.M. when I arrived. Sorry you had to leave, but am glad to hear your stepfather is doing okay.

Good job completing the day's mileage and....
Good luck at the Savannah HM!!

Week 10 of Marathon Training

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Had a great week last week! Did a challenging Interval Run, a Tempo run and my longest run of the season so far at 15 miles. I had a really busy schedule last week so when I did my Tempo run, the only time I could do it outside was around 1pm and it was close to 90 degrees. I really didn't think I would finish, was really to call it quits after 5 miles, but I stuck it out and finished the 7 miles. On Saturday I did my 15 and really enjoyed it. Many runners enjoy running with a partner or group, but I actually prefer to run solo. I love listening to my Bible on my Ipod, it's so relaxing and makes the time go by quickly. I look forward to running and listening to Yahweh!

On Sunday, I'll run a Half Marathon race, plus some. My schedule calls for 17 miles, so I figure, why not run 13.1 in a race? I plan to get there early to get most of my miles done before the race so I can be finished when I finish the race. We'll see. The race is almost an hour from me, so I'd need to be out of the house by 5am. I'm up with hubby at 4:30 to make his breakfast and lunch so it shouldn't be a problem.

Enjoying it all, and especially now loving the cooler weather!

Week 9 of Marathon Training

Sunday, October 14, 2012

So after getting sick, something else! During my run last Sunday, I got bit or stung by something and I had an extreme reaction to it. The bite was just behind my knee and it turned into a huge blister with swelling and redness about 3 inches all around. It hurt to bend it and walk, let alone run. So after going to the Doctor, had to take another couple days off! But it didn't deter me!

On Thursday, I went out for a 5k fun run with a local group and actually did my best 3.1 ever at 24:12 so I was pretty happy! Then yesterday, just an easy 30 minute run.

Today had a 12 Miles Easy, so I decided last minute to sign up for a local 15k and figured I'd just run the additional miles. Worked out perfectly. It was a very hilly course (rare in my area), but the weather was nice. I just kept my pace easy around 10:00 and enjoyed the run.

Feeling great!

Great job powering through, Tia! I'm glad tacking the extra mileage on worked for you - I am planning on doing that next month.

Sorry to hear about the bug bite. I got one once right under my butt, in that crease between leg and heinie (I sat down on a spider on a lounge chair out by the pool). It swelled up and was so painful! Not to mention embarassing! :D Glad to hear you've recovered!

Week 8 of Marathon Training

Sunday, October 07, 2012

This week was a bust. After the Tower of Terror Race, I think from walking around for 4 hours soaked from sweat, and then not getting enough sleep, I caught a nasty cold. I usually catch it early by eating a clove of garlic when I first feel symptoms, but on Monday, the symptoms were so slight I didn't pay attention. I did my upper body and core workout on Monday and that's the last time I worked out. By Tuesday, I was sick in bed. And on Wednesday, traveled to SC to visit my Grandmother and felt miserable the entire time there (including my ears being plugged the entire day). I had planned to hook up with a running group while there, but nothing like that happened. I'm still not 100% but it seems the cold is out of my chest now, and I am feeling better.

So today I got out there and ran 8 Miles and felt awesome! I went easy and enjoyed it! In the words of the group "Chumbwumba", "I get knocked down, but I get up again!"

Pic of me, Mom and Grandma (Mom is 71 and Grandma on my Dad's side is 90). Hope I get their genes!

Whew! Sis, I am glad you are feeling better. Thansk for sharing the tip about the clove of garlic. Now that you've had an involuntary recovery window, I am sure your legs are itching for a run. I love that song... glad you are up again, a cold is "never gonna keep you down."

You really got hit by a double whammy - first all the bad aspects of the Tower of Terror and then a cold that kept you from working out all the next week. Bummer. But I have know doubt you will be back on your game and back at training very soon! I also appreciate that you blog about the bad times as well as the good!!
