Biked...at the gym...

Friday, June 01, 2012

Well I thought I'd get the feel of riding, and since I don't have a bike yet, I got on the upright bike (I normally ride the recumbent one) and rode for 9.25 miles which is the biking distance of the Tri I'll be doing. I did it at 75-80% max HR at avg 80 RPM and it took me 43:26. I have no idea how that translates into riding a road bike on the road, but I'm thinking it will take me 45-50 minutes to ride the distance.

So at this point, if all goes well, I'm looking at 27 minutes for the run, 50 minutes for the bike at 15 minutes for the swim, so a little over an hour and a half. I have two weeks to get better and get my goal time under 1:30 so we'll see. I know for your first event, you should concentrate on time, but I'm way to competitive with myself for that lol. I won't put pressure on myself but will set a goal.

Making progress! Wishing all a great and active weekend!

If you get a chance, ride the bike route (and run the last portion, brick or not) before the event. Not only will you know the route (and not get lost - kidding, they'll have the route well marked and volunteers to make sure you are going the right way) but you can see what areas are best for "putting the hammer down." Be careful about banking any turns so you don't wipe out from going too fast, and use any downhills to your advantage. It's so much fun to pass the speed limit on a downhill.
Looking forward to your race report. I know you will be spectacular, because you are a star! emoticon

Remember that you will feel fatigue after each event. it is a definite challenge and experience. I suggest you try some combo workouts...run/bike then bike/swim....

First Swim in a Lap Pool...so this is what 225 yards feels like!

Thursday, May 31, 2012

A running friend who is training for her 2nd Triathlon invited me to her gym to swim tonight. The local Rec pool doesn't open until next week and I need all the help I can get, so I went. So far, I've swam in my Mom's pool which is just over 10 yards each lap.

This was a 25 yard lap pool just like the one I'll be swimming in the Tri in just over 2 weeks. So I needed to do 10 laps. I was able to do 3 of them without stopping, but the other 7 I had to stop somewhere around the halfway point or a little further.

I was able to finish in 20 minutes so I was happy. With some practice, I'm hoping to do the swim in the Tri in 15 min or less, but my goal will just be to finish.

Waiting for my bike to come, should be here in a day or two. Will post pics when I get it! That will be the next adventure...the bike...

I BOUGHT A BIKE!!!

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

So after complaining that I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on this Tri, I have now bought a Tri Suit (got a great deal from www.swimbikerun.com for $29.99 for top and bottom each (normally $59.99) and then this morning I broke down and bought a Road Bike! I figure even if I don't do another Tri, I want a bike so I can do some outdoor exercise during the summer, since I don't like to run in the heat.

Bike should arrive in the next 2-3 days and I look forward to getting on it! I'm going to test out the saying "As easy as riding a bike!" I've had some people tell me about getting clips, aero bars, etc. etc. and I honestly don't want to hear about anything else I need to get LOL! The only other thing I'll buy is a helmet which I'll get from Walmart for $16 (an Ironman friend of mine gave me the thumbs up for it's quality).

My local Rec Center pool opens next week so I'll go there as it's the same distance as the pool I'll be swimming in for the Tri. I went by to look at it today and each lap is 25 yards (Mom's pool is a little over 10 yards). Wonder if I can get from one end to the other...

The adventure continues...Wishing all of you an awesome day!

You live in Florida and you just got a bike? Well, it's about time.

We bought ours two months after we moved here three years ago. I agree with you on the Summer heat. We have the best bike trails around here to crosstrain on. Just be safe and watch the other vehicles especially when you are on the bike lanes. I try to stay on our Pinellas Trail close to my house. I wish you years of enjoyment and good luck on your Tri. I've got a Duathlon on my calendar for next year...it's only a matter of time before I embrace a Tri!

2nd Day in the Water...CAN YOU SAY PROGRESS!!!

Sunday, May 27, 2012

Went over Mom's for dinner so figured I'd get a swim in while there. I was determined to beat my 30 minute time for doing 20 laps.

While I didn't do any laps without rest, I definitely took less rest than the other day, so I was SO excited when I finished my 20th lap just shy of 15 minutes! So I cut my time in HALF - WOO HOO! Imagine after I really start training 3 days a week for the next 3 weeks!

Now I'm really excited! Will be getting on the bike soon...20 days until the TRI!

Finally got in the water...21 days until my 1st Triathlon!

Saturday, May 26, 2012

Yesterday I decided to give swimming a "try" lol! My Mom has a pool so it was easier to go over her house than be humiliated at a public pool since I don't really know swim technique. Basically I can get from one end to the other but it ain't pretty. My Mom's pool is just over 10 yards long so my goal was to do 20 laps (Tri will be 225 yards) to get me on my way. It took me 30 minutes to do that! For you "non-swimmers" like me, you might think that's pretty good, but believe me, it was a snail's pace. I had to stop after every lap! But you've got to start somewhere right?

I don't have a bike, haven't had or been on one in 30 years and a Running Friend from Facebook who lives near me offered to let me use her bike! She's training for her first Tri as well but has longer to go, so she will use her husband's, I'll use hers and we'll train together. And she lives in a nearby community with a lap pool so we'll swim together too. I'm so excited! Plus I have a friend who's done a couple Ironman's and she's offered to help me with my strokes.

So I my journey into the Tri world is exciting so far!

On another note, I had my breathing test and everything came back perfect, so I've been taking the Singular and using the inhaler before my workouts and have felt like my normal self! Praise Yahweh!!!
