Wanted to share this little story because it has so much to do with us setting our goals and staying on track to lose the weight and lead the healthy lifestyle we so deserve.
One day a boy and his father went to a pet store to buy a puppy. While in the store, they noticed the owner's dog, a beautiful golden lab, sitting next to him crying with a loud groan. You could tell the dog was in pain. It would just sit there and cry.
The little boy asked his Father, "Daddy, why is that dog crying?" The father asked the store owner, "What's wrong with your dog? Why does he keep groaning like that?"
The owner replied nonchalantly, "Oh, he's laying on a nail."
The father looked puzzled and asked, "Why doesn't he get off of it?"
The owner replied, "It doesn't hurt bad enough. When it does, he'll move."
The moral of this story is, when our nail hurts bad enough, we'll change. We'll charge. We won't let anything get in the way of us accomplishing our goals. We will lead the healthy lifestyle we deserve without feeling deprived. We will find the time to exercise regularly. We will eat to live instead of live to eat. We will not let our emotions get the better of us. We will NOT make excuses.
My question to you is "DOES THE NAIL HURT YOU BAD ENOUGH YET???"
Mine became too painful in December 2008 and I finally GOT OFF THAT DARN NAIL FOR GOOD! If I can do it, SO CAN YOU!

I can't believe it's been a month since I blogged last. Guess it's been pretty busy, but in a good way. A few things that have happened:
1) On 4/3 ran my first 5k of the year and placed 3rd in my age group! That was a goal of mine for this year, but didn't expect to hit it so soon. Did my best 5k ever, even beat my time from when I was 28 over 13 years ago.
2) On 4/10, ran a 15k, first one of these since I started my weight loss journey in Jan. 2009. Last Feb, I ran the 15k in 1:51, on a totally flat course and I struggled the entire way. This time, about a third of the course was either bridges or inclines and finished in 1:31 - a full 20 minutes sooner than my previous time! So I was excited!
3) Training for this Figure Competition has been the hardest thing I've done yet. The diet is what's so hard. It's super restrictive, but I've managed to stay on track and my body fat and inches continue to drop. My goal is to be under 20% within the next two weeks. Last weekend I went to see my first competition. My trainer was competing in her first one. It was amazing, and I truly have so much more respect for the work that goes into this.
I've been getting one cheat meal each week, and I'd come to dread it because now my body is so used to unsalted, clean food, that when I try to put bad stuff in, I get sick and don't sleep well. I never thought I'd enjoy eating the same things over and over again, but I'm really okay with it. 5 days a week I eat 16 egg whites, so that's taken some getting used to. I sometimes feel like all I do is shop, chop, prepare and eat! But I'm enjoying the results and feel great. I now know I can do anything I put my mind to!
4) I've recently stepped up my workout, so I'm doing strength 3 days a week by working two body parts for 30 minutes then going into the gym's Just Pump Class for full body, then 30 min of cardio. Doing HIIT cardio 5 days a week. I've gotten to where I can do 30 unassisted pullups, so that's an accomplishment! Going for 40 before the end of this month.
5) Just enjoying the process! Here's me and my precious nephew making a muscle (taken a little over a month ago).

Well after almost 3 full weeks of eating such bland food with no salt or sugar or (hot sauce), I'm used to the food and have been able to get creative with flavors!
My trainer weighed and measured me on 3/10 and then again on 3/24. I was hoping for SOME results to make me feel good about this crazy diet and intense workouts, and well, here are the TWO WEEKS results:
3/10 - 135.8 lbs
3/24 - 137.6 lbs - UP!
3/10 - 29.6%
3/24 - 26.4% - DOWN!!!
3/10 - 42 in
3/24 - 40.75 in - DOWN 1.25 INCHES!!!
3/10 - 35 in
3/24 - 34.5 in - DOWN 0.5 INCH!!!
3/10 - 29.5 in
3/24 - 27 in - DOWN 2.5 INCHES!!!
3/10 - 39 in
3/24 - 38 in - DOWN 1 INCH!!!
3/10 - 21 in
3/24 - 20 in - DOWN 1 INCH!!!
3/10 - 11.75 in
3/24 - 10.75 in - DOWN 1 INCH!!!
3/10 - 13 in
3/24 - 12.75 in - DOWN 0.25 INCH!!!
Needless to say, I was SO happy and very encouraged to keep doing what I'm doing! My body's responding well to the food and training and it doesn't appear I'm retaining water, which is great! It shows with the weight being up but everything else being down, which was initially amazing to me as well.
So I'll suffer through 70+ more days of this to get my dream body and perhaps step on stage to compete!
What's funny is that I've never actually wore a bikini in public, and my first time doing so may be in front of 1,000 people! S-C-A-R-Y, but yet another goal and challenge to conquer! Just had to share because I'm so excited!
And to my running buddies, I ran 5 miles yesterday. That's the most I've run since the marathon less than a month ago. Since I'm training for this competition I can't do nearly as much cardio as i used to, but I had signed up for a 15k before deciding to do this and my trainer cleared me to do it as long as I only do one long run a week, and no more than six miles before the race, which is fine. I'm doing a 5k next weekend, and plan to do at least one a month to build my speed. I normally run by myself, but yesterday ran with a friend who's going to also do the 15k and it pushed me, so I ran much faster than if I was by myself, which was great!
Just enjoying the process!

This is from one of my favorite self-improvement books called: 177 Mental Toughness Secrets of the World Class! There's something for every area of life and each "Secret" is just a page or two. This is my favorite one, I refer to it anytime I set a goal to do something great! It's "secret" #127 and I wanted to share it with my Spark Champions!
CHAMPIONS NEVER SAY DIE!
THE MIDDLE CLASS WILL PERSIST UNTIL THEY BECOME UNCOMFORTABLE. THE UPPER CLASS WILL PERSIST UNTIL IT BECOMES PAINFUL. THE WORLD CLASS NEVER SAYS DIE. CHAMPIONS ARE COMFORTABLE BEING UNCOMFORTABLE, BECAUSE THEY HAVE GROWN SO ACCUSTOMED TO RISK THAT FEELINGS OF VULNERABILITY ALMOST SEEM NATURAL. CHAMPIONS DON’T EVEN BEGIN TO PAY ATTENTION UNTIL THEY FEEL PAIN, WHICH THEY EXPECT TO FEEL ON A REGULAR BASIS. CHAMPION CYCLIST LANCE ARMSTRONG SAYS RACING DOESN’T EVEN GET INTERESTING UNTIL IT BECOMES WHAT HE CALLS A “SUFFER-FEST.” EVEN THE UPPER CLASS CANNOT COMPETE WITH THE WORLD CLASS BECAUSE, WHILE GOOD PERFORMERS HAVE A DEEP DESIRE TO WIN, THE GREAT ONES ARE COMMITTED TO WINNING. THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE TWO THOUGHT PROCESSES IS SUBSTANTIAL. FAILURE TO MANIFEST THE VISION IS NOT AN OPTION; CHAMPIONS WILL DO IT OR DIE TRYING. THE MANTRA THEY LOVE TO ESPOUSE IS, “WHATEVER IT TAKES.” THE GREAT ONES ARE MASTERS OF SELF-DENIAL, SUFFERING AND SACRIFICE. THEY DO IT ALL TO LIVE THEIR VISION. IF YOU’RE GOING TO GO UP AGAINST THE GREAT ONES, YOU BETTER PACK A LUNCH – IT’S GOING TO BE A LONG AFTERNOON.

From a Facebook post, I was contacted by a local news anchor about doing a segment on this, and I thought, what a perfect thing for Sparkers who are losing weigh and anyone really!
If you haven't heard of it, it's a Girlfriend's Clothing Swap that's called NAKED LADY PARTY. My Sister's been throwing them twice a year for about 4 years now. They've become one of my favorite things!
Here's how it works:
Invite several of your girlfriends (my sister's Evite usually has over 100 people on it), allow them to invite their girlfriends.
Ask each person to bring at least 3 gently worn items that could consist of clothing, shoes, accessories like belts, purses, etc.
Rent or buy wardrobe racks to put clothing on. Arrange clothes by size (get the girlfriends to help). Use couches and chairs to pile clothes on as well.
Ask everyone to bring an appetizer and beverage. There usually ends up being 20-30 people who come, which is perfect.
Let's say the party starts at 6pm, as people arrive they can "preview shop" to see items they'd want. Then at the designated time, usually half hour to an hour later once everyone is there, let the shopping begin! Bedrooms and bathrooms and other rooms are used for changing, but eventually we're changing clothes all over (thus you have "Naked Ladies"). Limit to 3 items to try on at a time.
At the end (maybe after an hour to an hour and half depending on size of the group), do a Show and Tell, where each person goes around and shows the items they picked, and as they're doing so the person who donated each item identifies themself as well. Sometimes we even have people model a favorite item they found. It's also a great time to highlight those who have dropped a size or more!
Some items still have tags on them and I've gotten several cocktail dresses and even suits!
Any items left over get donated to a charity picked beforehand.
I've always been able to come home with practically a complete wardrobe, which is great, plus it's a great time to clean out the closet!
And with so many of us transitioning into different sizes, it's a cost effective way to get clothes for those "in-between" stages. At the Naked Lady Party in October 2008, I was so excited to get a great pair of jeans, size 14. I was always "shopping" in the "large" section of clothes. This last party which was this past Saturday, I was shopping in the "small" section and most items were size Small or 4! Love it!
It's a blast! I just wanted to share, and if you have one, I'd love to know about it!
Below are a few pics of me wearing items I've gotten from the Naked Lady Party, from size 14 to size 4, it's been great and I look forward to the next one!
