My stomach was a bit queasy this evening, and I didn't feel like going grocery shopping, so I stopped at Walgreen's. They were out of bread, but had whole wheat flat bread, so I decided to try it. Heated it up in the microwave with ham and cheese and rolled it up like a burrito. It tasted pretty good. I also got some diet A&W root beer; one of the few sodas that tastes almost like the original. I'm becoming a pro at this low carb thing!

No flatbread at the market yesterday so I got a raincheck. Flatbread makes a nice pizza crust, too. Not nearly the calories and you can veg it up if you want. Makes a healthy dinner or snack.

When I have a quesy stomach I go for ginger ale, the real thing, or ginger tea. Does rootbeer work? Never tried that.

Sugar Levels are Better!!!

Saturday, January 19, 2013

Since the doctor changed my meds to metformin, I didn't see much improvement, other than nausea that lasted for a month. I did lose more weight, but it wasn't exactly comfortable. My sugar levels were still in the 150s to 170s in the morning - they should be under 120 fasting, says my doctor.
Well, last night I went to bed early and woke up at about 2 a.m. I tested, and my sugar was only 111! I was hungry, so I had some oatmeal, but I expected that would bounce my sugars back up. It didn't! When I woke up at 8:30 a.m., it was only 126, and that was probably due to not having taken my meds yet (on workdays, I take them at 6 a.m.).
I'm absolutely thrilled! I already feared I'd have to pump more and more meds into my body, but it seems the plan is working out after all.
Thank you to all of you who encouraged me to hang in there!

It sometimes takes a week or two for metformin to kick in. Now that it has, keep testing so you know effect what various foods have...... emoticon

Yes! Whenever possible, medicine should be the secondary rather than the main treatment (lifestyle changes). You are doing everything right! Go you!

The Thug Look

Friday, January 18, 2013

My pants are starting to slip. I've been wearing a pair that was too tight for me for a few years, but they are moving downwards now, too. My students are looking at me funny; they probably think I'm getting into the thug look, lol! I have to dig deeper into the closet for tighter pants!

The Secret Rooms Upstairs - Discovered

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

I've been a member of my health club for over two years, and I'm embarrassed to say that I never went to the upstairs level until yesterday. Downstairs are the indoor pool, outdoor pool (in the summers), as well as the locker rooms, and those are really the only areas I've been using. There are fitness and weight rooms as well, but I've only looked at them, not used them.
I love to swim, but yesterday, it was terribly cold outside, so I didn't want to go into the cold with damp hair afterwards. Around 8:30 p.m. I got hungry and bored, and so I ate an apple and then went to the club. I put on my new exercise pants I got at Ross for $10, plus an old T-Shirt, and then I climbed up the stairs for the first time.
The upstairs is very nice! Treadmills and stationary bikes in several separate rooms so the area is broken up a bit, plus a nice walking track around the whole thing. I was quite surprised to find that there are more weight machines upstairs. I'll try those once I have built up some endurance.
Anyway, I got on a stationary bike. Haven't worked out in 2 weeks because I was sick, so the first 5 to 10 minutes were tough, but with breaks, I was able to do 20 minutes. It was actually enjoyable, especially since the club plays really good classic rock.
I think we need a SP trophy for trying something new.

I'm envious!!! I live in a big town that pretends to be a city, so there are no nice gyms near home - the only one has old machines and it's pretty expensive. I haven't swum for two years and a half, I miss it sooo much I'm seriously thinking of buying a plastic pool for children, haha.

What a good idea - a sparktrophy for trying something new! Until then, here:
You certainly deserve one!
I read a great comment about gyms not long ago. It said, "you're worried if others are watching you, but the truth is, they aren't. They're too busy worrying if others are watching them." lol.

Lost 10 pounds and already getting compliments!

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

This is working much better than I anticipated. I started on the program last November, tracking everything I ate and did, and I already lost 10 pounds! I did not even follow the meal plan, and exercise has been in streaks, since I got sick a lot, so I could not keep up a regular routine. I did track all my foods and activities and ate less and moved more overall. Also, I got rid of the Actos (diabetes medication) that makes one gain weight, but that was already after I was losing. The new medicine, metformin, is supposed to help with weight loss, so that's a bonus.
People have been complimenting me lately - not on weight loss specifically (even though my mom noticed), but that I'm looking good overall. Very encouraging!
