Recovery is still going well, I showered for the first time on Saturday. The incisions are healing nicely, a lot of the stitches have dissolved already. I'm also taking very few painkillers now, so it is going well. I took a long walk around the woods with my mother and granddad last week, it was slower than normal but nice to be out of the house and moving. When I walked over to my friend's house for New Years Eve, I noticed I was nearly back at my old pace, although that still is a little uncomfortable.

Didn't lose any weight but I didn't gain either which is good, this week I'm hoping to walk some more and start getting into the habit of getting up earlier again. I've also been working my way though a bag of kale (that no one else wants to eat), I think I probably ate a quarter of it for lunch today.

I love kale. I like leafy green veggies! You can do it.

It's great you didn't gain this week! I'm sure you will continue to make amazing progress week by week. emoticon I think kale is my favorite green. It has so much flavor. I made a replica of the kale salad at Whole Foods the other day and loved it.

New Year 2012

Sunday, January 01, 2012

Another year has begun, I celebrated by remembering why I don't drink Coke. But I also watched some films with friends and enjoyed eating 12 falafels and salted Pringles. Not the healthiest of meals but certainly not the worst I've eaten at parties. My mum asked before I left if I had any resolutions, I stated to make my diet more awesome. She asked how my diet could possibly need improving. In comparison to my mother and sister my diet looks pretty amazing but then they don't see the junk food binges they only see the healthy side.

I have three major lifestyle goals for this coming year:
1. Continue the exercise momentum I created from the last 12 weeks
Of course this is far more challenging as I am unable to do much more than walk currently, I plan to start running again after my six-week post surgery date (halfway through February). This is because I have to wear a compression vest 24/7 and that restricts my breathing so once that's off I'll be able to run. Despite managing to reach 60+ minutes of uninterrupted running last year I shall be starting with baby steps, doing the whole walk 3 minutes, run 1 minute to make sure that I don't overdo it/can monitor how I feel. I have a 1.8 mile run on April 1st as my target. As for strength training I've been told I can start after four weeks, but I want to wait until about March so that my scars have a good healing period. I'll reintroduce the HIIT training I did but only a 2 or 3 times a week and at a lower intensity. Exercise for the first part of the year will be about baby steps and taking it slow, after the 1.8 mile run in April I'll set some new targets. I do plan to walk pretty much every morning until I get back into running.

2. Improve my diet
What this goal is really about is to deal with my emotional eating. As a whole my diet is pretty good, it certainly seems healthier then the diets of my peers. However as I mentioned above I can binge pretty easily. What happens is I buy something like a pack of biscuits, I then proceed to eat all of them very quickly as I don't want them around tempting me. The same happens with crisps, bars of chocolate etc. I'm approaching this goal in 3 ways; I have a diet plan with each of my meals and 2 snacks planned in, lots of fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains; when I get a craving or urge for said food I shall consider if I really want it or if I'm just bored (my main reason for emotional eating, stress/depression being the second), I'll see if there is any way I can have what I want (the problem with having a pack is I'll eat all of them even if I keep it away from me) otherwise I plan to indulge myself in foods I can't normally splurge on like mangos and grapes. With the amount of money I was spending on junk I can actually afford these, healthy substitutes. The final thing is to find other ways of dealing with those emotions that doesn't involve food. This is probably the hardest of all my goals.

3. Take care of myself
This means that I make sure I'm getting enough sleep and my schedule is consistent, I'm taking appropriate amounts of rest or lighter exercise days, I'm stretching after I exercise every time (I'm not so good at this), I continue mediation before sleep (it helps me rest a little better). Appropriately dealing with stress is also important, it's my final year at university so it could be a little stressful. I also am healing after surgery, hopefully starting a new acne treatment, probably having a revision of the surgery at the end of the year, still trying to lower my cholesterol and hopefully finally fixing the trapped nerves and knotted tissue in my back and neck. Also when I'm feeling low (and I'm getting far better at recognising this) I make sure I continue to take care of myself, even if it is just focusing on small things like brushing my teeth twice a day and showering.

I hope everyone had a great New Years Eve and that everyone has had a great start to the new year.

These are great goals! Sounds like you have a plan to make them happen. Along with HIIT workouts I also love Tabata. Check them out on You Tube for some ideas. They are 4 minute workouts that are seriously intense.

Everyone always thinks I'm super healthy too. they don't see the binges behind closed doors. Getting a handle on emotional eating is HUGE. I know you can do it!

I hope you are recovering nicely from your surgery. I know it has to be difficult to take it easy for a while. Thanks for the goodie! I appreciate the thought.

Well surgery happened, I went in for 7am but didn't actually have the surgery until closer to 4pm. I've never gone so long without food and drink before, wasn't too bad but I was certainly getting dizzy near the end. I was allowed out on the 24th so I was back in time for Christmas. The surgeon informed me that they took nearly .5kg from each side, didn't realise they weighed that much. I'm still sore and swollen but the pain is far better than I imagined it would be and it is nice being at home again.

I'll keep up these weekly blog things, but I won't be up to much for the next few weeks as I continue to recover. Next weeks entry will mention my goals for the upcoming year.

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas.

I'm so glad you had a great week and the surgery went ok. I never did understand why hospitals make you show up many hours before the surgery. Maybe it's to make sure you don't eat or something. Anyway, glad things came out ok. Here's to a great 2012! emoticon

So I managed to do quite a bit of my exercise last week. The last remains of my cold have been around, tends to be what happens. I'm back home as well so my diet hasn't been as good, should improve once we go shopping today and I pick up some greens and other vegetables. I also should have surgery this Thursday so after that I won't be running until February and strength training until March. That's quite a long time off but I have a short running goal in April (1.8 miles) so I'll have something to look forwards to and to get me back in the habit.

I hope that everyone has a good Christmas. emoticon

I'm cautiously saying that I'm nearly over my cold. It wasn't the worse cold I've ever had but it was quite chest located and it meant I was wheezing just sitting around. So after Tuesday in which I did 50 dips (which left me quite sore for the next 3 days, I was a tad over ambitious)and my ab workout I called it a day. By Thursday it moved from a hacking cough to generally feeling bad, Friday was spent non-stop sneezing and watering eyes. Saturday was slightly better, still watery eyes, I took a short walk outside but my eyes refused to stop streaming. Yesterday was the first day I started to feel slightly more normal, my eyes have certainly stopped watering. This morning I did one of the 10 minute workout videos on the site to ease myself back in. I got tired quite easily and am still wheezy so I'm not quite better yet.

In order to ease my symptoms I drank a lot of water, cups of herbal tea, leafy greens, oranges, orange juice and smoothies with dark berries in (I can't normally afford to splurge on them). I also continued with my vitamin C and multi-vitamin I take and snacked on some almond, walnuts and hazelnuts. Plus some dark chocolate from my advent calendar. I don't know if any of the above helped but I like all of those foods so I don't mind. I'm just happy I'm not sneezing non-stop, my eyes and throat were getting sore.

This week I'm taking it easy, just doing a bit of exercise and seeing how it goes. I have surgery next week so it's important that I beat this cold so I'm fit enough to undergo that. Later this week I shall blog about the 11 week fitness program I gave myself and how it went.
