Illness in the Workplace: NOT ME

Monday, August 30, 2010

Several of my co workers are sick. With the flu.

I have been taking my Alive Whole Food Multi Vitamins regularly (even take them with me to work just in case) and so far, so good. I have missed the last several workplace illnesses that have come our way and I plan on missing the next several as well. There are some folks who get sick and never seem to get well, there are others who get every germ that runs around this place like clockwork.

Granted, we're sitting in air conditioning and recycled air for over 8 hours, so this place is a hotbed for disease. We also share desks so there are containers of Clorox wipes all over the place.

I want to tell the constantly sick people to be more healthy in their lifestyle, I really do, but that's overstepping someline, especially in the workplace. We're told to stay home if we're sick, yet at the same time the attendance policy doesn't really mesh with that idea. Thus we get sick folks who show up to work.

I don't like being sick. Like is hard enough without feeling horrible, so I will do what I can to stay well. So I will take my vitamins, drink my tea and wash my hands religiously.

10 hour work days. All the things I left at home today. THERA BANDS! Soup!

Monday, August 09, 2010

10 hour work days are LAME.

Four cups of Trader Joe's Pomegranate White Tea has helped.

Its been a bad several days with the IBS. Its not so bad today, but yesterday and stabbing contractions were just awful, and I always had to pee. I did some research online and discovered bladder issues are not uncommon when it comes to IBS, something about intestinal flora affecting it, hence yeast infections. Well, it makes TOTAL sense.

Sadly, I ran out of the house today without the extra fiber tabs I was going to grab AND the extra Alive Superfood Multivitamins I meant to put into my purse. And my allergy pill and blood pressure medicine. Forgot ALL OF THAT. The 14 year old is sick and I really don't want to catch what she has, that would just be the end of me. Hence the reason why I was going to fortify with extra vitamins. The fibre was for my gut, my poor poor gut. I have lemon balm salve (left that at home as well) that is anti spasmodic so when I get home I can put that on. I can also have my Owens Acres Sun Tea Herbs which has lemon balm and calendula, soothing and anti spasmodic as well. Yep, that's at home as well.

I hope tomorrow I can remember what I want to bring to work. Wait! I can make a list!

See how smart I am?

I actually MOVED the other day. I busted out the Thera Bands (from my last stint with PT) and used them on my legs to strengthen my lower back. I did that for five minutes and was panting and sweating like I just ran a marathon but it felt good, and afterward I felt great! I found several websites that have accessories you can purchase for your Thera Bands (and purchase them if you don't already have them) as well as movements that target certain areas. Its resistance training for sure, but for those of us who haven't moved in a while and are just getting started and are a bit stiff and creaky, I highly recommend them.

Last week we had Thanksgiving in Summer at my house. Usually its Thanksgiving in July but this time we were a bit late. Yes, its what you think, TURKEY! POTATOES! STUFFING! PEAS! We have Central Air in the house so the heat from the oven didn't bother us. Now, the biggest thrill for me isn't the meal, its the leftovers. In other worlds, SOUP. FRESH SOUP with FRESH STOCK and TONS OF VEGGIES. I don't know how my friend makes her soup, I know for a fact she doesn't use a recipe, but whatever it is it is absolutely delicious. I pick out the turkey and go to town on the veggies and the broth. I can't really handle the pieces of turkey (especially the dark meat) but the broth from the fresh stock makes my entire body happy. Of course I look like a fool picking out the carrots, peas, grean beans, potatoes, onions celery and spinach out of the pot, but the result...I had about 12 oz of goodness last night and it was still hot. Filling? Absolutely. Most important, it was SOOTHING. Gentle on the stomach, a warm blanket on my psyche, you name it. The seasons will be changing soon and we are armed with soup recipes for the chilly days of fall and winter.

VEGETABLE STOCK IS JUST AS GOOD AS MEAT STOCK. I prefer vegetable stock, really, but there are recipes out there for excellent vegetable stock and vegetable soups. If I could I would live on soup when its cold out. With all of the stressors I have in life, and the fact that I tend to run high strung to begin with, soup is calming and relaxing and gentle and its WARMTH. Believe me, yesterday I was a mess and even though I was drowning in lavender and other essential oils while I was at work, I didn't start to feel better until I was in the car on the way home. I was finally AT PEACE when I sat down to my hot bowl of goodness.

It's the simple things in life that matter. I know I forget that when I am so stressed out I can't even think straight.

I can't believe I finally did it.

I have been wanting to do this for so long but I never had the nerve to.

I had a personalized wellness consultation done by a Certified Master Herbalist and holistic health practitioner, my first one ever. I have a NP as my primary care doctor, but I felt I needed one more step.

I found out so much about myself, and what I need to change about me to get me healthy. Sure its about losing weight, but there's also the rest of my body that needs attention as well. I realize that I am not doing some diet, but I am doing a lifestyle change. Its about putting less chemicals in my body than more, its about changing my mindset.

This is something that motivates me and gets me excited! Taking this step was huge for me and I am so glad I have done it. emoticon

Started out good, ended bad.

Friday, July 30, 2010

By the time I left work this evening I was so stressed out I was barely breathing. I just hit the freeway to head home and I realized I was so tight I was barely breathing. I have three days off after today, and there's no way I was going to spend that time pissed off and tense.

I have an hours commute so I decided that by the time I got home I would be breathing deeply and I wouldn't let the day bother me. I turned on the latest Deepak Chopra CD a friend lent me...I couldn't tell you exactly what he was saying but his voice is soothing. I have a lavender essential oil roll-on I carry around with me, I smeared some on the inside of my wrists. I needed something more, so when I was off the interstate and onto the highway doing a lesser speed I dug for my Badger Headache Balm and massaged some into my temples, the back of my neck and into my shoulders. I concentrated on my breathing, and thought of nice things, like the nice hot cup of tea I was going to have when I got home.

Well, it worked. The Badger Headache Balm worked wonders and it smells really good. By the time I got home I was breathing and I felt SO MUCH BETTER. As soon as I made it into the house I put the kettle on for tea, Sun Tea Herbs by which contains Contains: Lemon Balm, Lemon Verbena, Stevia, Asst. Mints, Calendula, Lavender, Catnip, Rose
Petals, and Hibiscus. The nice thing is that you can drink it hot or cold, I prefer it hot.

So now...I feel much more centered, relaxed and ready for bed. Bad day? What bad day? emoticon www.badgerbalm.com/pc-436-2-headache

I can't believe I am actually doing this.

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

I found this site purely by accident while I was not reading Facebook. I came on over, looked around and thought to myself, hey. This sounds like it would be a good thing to do since I feel by myself in this new...um, THING I am doing.

The exercise is going to be the hardest part for me because I am very self conscious, but I have already made some changes! No more fast food, little to no processed food, lots of water, drink more healthy herbal teas...by next month I hope to be in a yoga class.

Take it one step at a time. I found that getting over being self-conscious was really important. Really, no one is looking at you in the gym...they are all focused on how they look.

Once I got over that self-consciousness, I now go to studio cycling classes 3 or 4 times a week (especially in the wintertime when it is rainy)...it really pays off and I like it.

I am so inflexible, that whenever I tried a yoga class I threw my back out. Guess I should try it again, but do it at my own pace.

Let us know how that class goes for you (when you get there).

And keep on sparkin'. This is a good place for support, accountability, and easy tools to track what you eat and your exercise.
