Thanks to everyone that commented on the running shoes post! I had a wee hunt around my house and found that my last really good pair of sports shoes were Asics Gel....So now I have an idea of what I've liked in the past, a few recommendations and fingers crossed the shoe store won't be too busy next time I go in.

I ran/walked 5k on the treadmill yesterday. Had an alright time 35.24. Aim to beat that next time however i've always jumped in all go without really continuing this journey. So by running when i can at the gym and not pushing it too hard, walking when I can I hope to gain great balance. I find that the energy I get from going to the gym can sustain me, my eating has also gotten better - with the exception of the odd cake and coffee...But that's life isn't it..

University is going ok, the job hunt is tedious but I know i'll get there when the time is right. It's all going to fall into place as long as I keep working hard in all respects and don't let myself slip to the point where I can't see where i've come from.

Tonight will be good - heading out for coffee with some girls from College and out for dinner with Mum and Dad and a club they are part of. It's been a great week for meeting up with old friends and new friends so i'm quite excited to start a life up here...Yeah it's expensive but I'm feeling so at peace with myself and although it's stressful, i'm Happy....If you told me 4 months ago that splitting up from a 3 year relationship i'd actually be Ok...I wouldn't have believed you...But here I stand. =)


Any recommendations for good running shoes?

Hi Guys,

I need some help - I've bought some new running clothes today as inspiration to not give up and keep going since I haven't bought any new ones for awhile. But now I need to sort out some running shoes? Anyone know of a really good pair? I'm completely lost with what to look for (I know my foot rolls slightly inward) but was wondering if anyone had any good shoe recommendations.

If you could help that would be awesome!

Other than that my week has gone pretty awesome can't wait to start next week! Will probably do my run tomorrow to clock in the virtual race =). Fingers crossed it won't be raining!

    The best advice I've ever received is that the shoes should fit perfectly when you try them on. You shouldn't have to "break-in" your running shoes for a perfect fit. :) I always look for shoes that feel great at first try. I also have no brand preferences except that I don't buy Nike's because I have wide feet and they are for the most part to narrow. Just don't settle for any pair of shoes. Be sure you are comfortable and run around the store a bit in them.

It will help you find a show that's right for you. You can have people tell you what they wear all day, but it might not be right for you. If you can, get professionally fitted. Good luck!

(For the record, I wear Asics Gel Kayanos and love them!)

    I would completely agree with them above.
Goto a speciality store.
I bought good New Balance and
1) My feet go numb.
2) just don't feet right
3) great arch support
4) small shoestring

They will fit you in the shoe for you.

    I think you'll do best to find a running specialty store (here in NJ we have one called the Sneaker Factory) and get your first pair there. Once you have a pair that is right for you, you can search sales online for replacing them. A good pair of running shoes will make ALL the difference for your knees and all sorts of things.

The running store here will recommend you bring your old sneakers in (they can tell by the wear patterns whether you over-pronate, etc) and then they'll find 3 or more pairs that would work for you. And you get to test drive them with a short run around the park and see which ones feel the best.

If you are having trouble finding a running specialty store (usually independent, not a big chain) look up local running clubs for advice, or go to the message boards on - you might find advice on something local.

It may be a $100 investment, but it is SO worth it, and you can save on the replacements down the road (pun intended)

    Thanks for your comments! Yeah i've been into a few stores and they hadn't been too bothered with helping me out so I thought i'd see if anyone could recommend one that they had success with. Thanks for your comments, i'll try another store and hopefully have more luck! =)

    I have some friends who are elite runners and I know they would tell you this, "Shoes are a personal preference." While most good running shoes are essentially the same when it comes to bio-mechanical concerns, they can and are different. You'll have to try on several and then pick what feels good. I can only tell you this, don't skimp on the shoes: Get a good pair. If cost is a concern, check out the OUTLETS or keep your eye out for a sale. Cheap running shoes can cause you problems. But Don't confuse "Cheap" with Inexpensive. There are articles on SP related to shoes and if you do the research, you'll find the right shoe for you.

I know this was a little long winded, but I think shoes are important. Good Luck.

    Hi The Crusader,
Visit a good running shop and get fitted, feet are individuals and need to be checked out before grabbing shoes.. It can pay to ask for help to avoid blisters, runners toes and shin splints..
No two people will give the same answer.. But the only thing between us and injuries is what is on our feet..

2 Minute Silence for Canterbury

I think that was the most intense silence apart from my grandmothers funeral almost 3 years ago. I was in tears before it even started. I do feel better to have the time to let some emotion out, i tend to bottle things so for those two minutes it's probably relieved about 70% of the internal stress.

I was weighed today at the doctors, i'm kind of ashamed to say that I've gained 3kg...2kg and the 1kg I lost to break the plateau is gained back again. I know this weight is superficial in the fact at least 2kg will go over the next few weeks. I'm focused and excited to continue taking small steps. I have about 9kg to go till my ultimate weight, but about 6kg to go to my lowest weight over the past 4 years.

I know this is doable. I'm going to start cooking meals at home with lots of vegetables so we cut down on the pasta that we have numerous times a week. I've also been to the library and got the Biggest Loser weight loss program and a 30 minute cookbook that I hope will inspire me.

I've been for a good walk today and hope to get a good pilates workout tonight, accompanied by an awesome day of food and excitement to go to the gym tomorrow.

Hope everyone has had a good day so far, my heart goes out to those in my hometown of Christchurch who have lost friends and family in this disaster.

    My heart hurts for Christchurch and the people there. I am so glad that you are ok, even with the extra kg. You will get rid of them.

A nice start to a new year.

I had my first day at Uni today which went awesome followed by a 35minute gym session. I feel so much better for putting the earthquake stuff behind me - i bought a pandora charm for my bracelet in recognition to kind of allow myself to move forward. I found out today that i'd been sabotaging myself quite a bit with my eating. It feels nice to eat and exercise again.

I'm also learning to drive which is going really well =). This year has been alright so far. I've got to stop dwelling on what's happened in the past and focus on the future. I've got to book my restricted and just keep challenging myself.

Just take things a day at a time =)

A new day.

I weighed myself this morning to find that i've finally got off my plateau. I've sat at that previous weight for months even when I was exercising most days I was never able to make the scale budge. I think my moderation is everything is working. I just tell myself have half of what you want to eat and move when you can some days it's a walk, some days it's a dvd or a run. This has to be the easiest way to lose weight.

I'm just so proud of myself!

Life is pretty same old at the moment for me. I need to do some washing and cleaning today but other than that the usual job hunt and relaxation. I might go for a victory walk/run =).
