What a Ride!

Saturday, September 05, 2009

First two weeks of school is over and it has been a wild ride so far - too many kids packed into classrooms designed for smaller classes. At least they seem to be a sweet bunch but adding to the problem is the fact that several barely speak English. At least I teach math, not language arts.

My Sparking has been cut down to 2-3 times a week because frankly when I walk in the back door, I'm ready to go to bed - and have a couple of nights. This morning after 12 hours sleep, I tackled a flower border and filled a lawn/leaf bag with weeds. That task netted me 240 minutes of cardio which was a double bonus as I've not had a lot of exercise this week except walking the halls of the school.

Still waiting for word on approval of my lap band surgery.

Great job on the gardening cardio! What a rewarding exercise. The flower bed must look fantastic!
Enjoy your long weekend.

I keep forgetting, are you diabetic? I have always wanted the lap band procedure done.
But with my bad heart, there is no doctor that will touch me. They won't even give me
a general anesthetic to remove part of my toe. All I get is novocaine and I intend to keep my eyes closed the whole time. I'm glad you got some new kids at school but the
language problem is everywhere. Here, the most often foreign language spoken is
Vietnamese and Farsi. Our school had to hire a linguist for the first time ever.
Here I hold a degree in Linguistics and none of it is of any help in our school. I speak
German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Polish and of course American English. emoticon

I hear you. The first two weeks of school are a wild ride. I'm glad it's done until next year. Good for you to take care of your own gardens by getting that rest and by working on what's important for you.

Need to Go Back to the Spa

Saturday, August 29, 2009

First week of school was a killer and my $55 french manicure didn't last the weekend. The hand spa thing was nice though.

Andy Rooney once said that when cookies got new and improved, somehow the cookie never got any bigger. That's my take on this school week as well as the coming year. Too many students crammed into a room, the lowest academically clumped together while the smarter - insert whiter - kids are bundled together at the other end of the hall in smaller groups with better materials. Somehow I thought all of that had ended along about 1965. Instead of no child left behind, we seem to be pursuing a policy of leaving them all behind, either academically or socially.

Well, this is not a rant day. For one thing, I'm too busy; for another, I'm too grateful for a job. Y'all have a great weekend!

A Spa Can Be Addictive

Saturday, August 15, 2009

If you have never been to a spa, you owe it to yourself to go at least once. Now, I've been to the beauty shop and the nail salon, etc. but a spa is entirely different and cool. All my budget would allow yesterday was a facial wax and "ultimate spa manicure" but I'm making plans already for my January self-birthday present and will tuck my blow money away accordingly.

The manicure was delicious - and looks gorgeous with my own nails done in a french manicure. Additionally, my hands were exfoliated, wrapped in warm towels, then massaged. I can't stop holding them myself. LOL My birthday gift will extend the mani to an ultimate spa pedi. I can hardly wait even though it will be too cold by then to show off my toesies.

Is this hedonistic, me, me, me? You bet and every now and again, a girl has to do what a girl has to do.

Barely a Blog

Friday, August 14, 2009

As I'm about to back out of my driveway, this is almost the antithesis of a blog but I wanted to make a quick comment about points and trophies. When I got my last trophy in July, I thought it would take forever to accumulate 5,000 points for the next one. I got busy and huddled and posted, exercised and tracked, and had my best month ever in July. Or so I thought.

This month, knowing I would be going back to school mid-month, I knew I had to rack up as many points as I could at the first of the month. Sooooooo, here I am at mid-August and have exceeded my total July points with the rest of the month to go. My goal is a 2,500 point month and I'm halfway there.

PS - only a couple thousand points to my next trophy.

Tried Unjury Protein Supplement Today

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Yuck! I used the unflavored in some Crystal Light and it tasted awful. I haven't tried the chocolate yet but will put it in cold skim milk. The dietitian gave us some samples to try as we line up our protein supplement for the post-op period. I'm pretty sure I'm going to use Slim Fast Optima because it tastes good.

My visit to the nephrologist went well although I did wind up with an additional med for blood pressure - that makes three in all. He was supportive of the lap band surgery and thinks I will probably be able to start dropping meds after I've lost the first 50 pounds. I hope he is correct.

Lynn, I am excited to hear your paperwork has been submitted to insurance, and your nephrology appointment went good! So sorry that the unflavored protein stuff tasted yucky!

I ordered samples of the other products Unjury offers, and hope to try them soom. My husband is a HUGE fan of the GNC Store brand protein mixes. We've tried the Chocolate and Cookies N Cream. I will be getting the vanilla too. They are TASTY! The first week of each month if you have a GNC gold card you get an additional 20% off your total purchase. We found that these packages last awhile. And taste FANTASTIC! emoticon

The best Unjury flavor is Chicken. I also liked the chocolate mixed in skim milk or added to my coffee.

The best Slim Fast is the lo carb variety. The Optima has too many carbs, the other one is lo carb/hi protein. That is the one my surgeon told me to drink preop.

The reason Slim Fast tastes good, or at least better than some, is because it is high in sugar. Same with Special K and some other highly marketed brands. I hope you keep trying different brands to see what you like, particularly ones geared for weight lifters or weight loss surgery patients, as they are high in protein and low in carbs/sugar. I personally prefer EAS Protein drinks. All of the ready-to-drink varieties are very good. The chocolate and strawberry powder is great, but the vanilla powder not so much...I have to drink that one very fast. Muscle Milk ready-to-drink are tasty too.

emoticon to hear that the protein shake was gross- I have an "unflavored" flavor too (different brand), and the only thing that it did not taste completely gross in were sweet things like apple sauce. I made myself use it beacuse they are soooo expensive! Good Luck!
