Do You Keep a Reading Journal?

Monday, June 27, 2011

A few years ago I picked up a copy of "The Well-Educated Mind" to define my reading skills a bit. One of the suggestions given to make reading more meaningful was to keep a reading journal. This is separate from a personal journal and used only to record thoughts and impressions of books read for intellectual reasons.

All this time, I had been making margin notes, which are hard to find for later reference. I don't use the journal for my pleasure reading, just for the "good stuff." I put down quotes I like that I might not be able to find in Bartletts, notes about maps and bibliographies, etc.

I'd really like my kids to read 100 books this next school year and have found a simple journal form for them to record their impressions. We'll see if being able to identify source information quickly helps their association abilities.

Thanks for the comments. Most of the kids can't read 100 books but if they have something to aim for, they will do better than if we aimed at nothing.

I don't keep one, but it's an interesting idea! emoticon

I used to keep a book blog and am trying to move it to another location, since I totally destroyed it. I hate hand writing, so a written journal is probably out. But I would review books, which was pretty much what you're talking about; recording impressions of those books for others to see what my thoughts were on them.

Right now I'm reading *The Cement Garden*. I'm loving it, but McEwan is hard to digest sometimes (haha, pardon the pun).

Sounds like a good idea, especially for my 4th graders. I may do it this summer with my pleasure reading as a model. Thanks for sharing the idea. emoticon

All I've done so far is keep track of authors & titles in the back of my regular journal. Let us know if you decide to try it and if you find it helpful! I'm curious!

I love the idea of keeping a reading journal. I'm going to use it. Thanks.

I also love the idea of having the kids read 100 books.

Good Day Sonshine!

Sunday, June 26, 2011

I read the saddest thing yesterday - a team member was leaving the team because someone had posted a scripture or religious-oriented blog, huddle, etc. How sad when someone's intolerance leads him/her to cut off his/her own nose to spite his/her face. It seems that despite a couple of wars that have cost us billions of dollars, some people just can't get the message that religious intolerance is the root of the world's woes, not money, not sex, not scandals although a little religion could help all those things, too!

I don't post scriptures because I don't think God requires it of me but if I feel a desire to do so, why should that be any different than someone else's posting swear words? The swear words only show an empty brain, the intolerance an empty heart.

That said, my dears, if your facebook posts routinely contain swear words, I'm going to hide them because I don't want my friends to think I talk that way or think that way. There's freedom of speech and there's freedom from speech, if you get my drift.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Well said !! How sad that someone's beliefs are so narrow that they hurt themselves far more than those of us who benefit. emoticon

You make some really good points & I actually feel sorry for that person who quit whatever team it was. They're probably small minded in the non*virtual world as well & I'm pretty sure it "costs" them in ways that they're not even aware of. I'm an evangelical, fundamentalist Christian but I don't shun people who aren't .... I pray for them privately. Thanks for your blog.

When someone is in your face saying things you don't approve of, it's not easy to get away - But - on Spark People, we have the choice to read or not. Don't let anyone upset you! emoticon emoticon

I totally agree with you. I have friends that post scriptures all the time. If I choose to read them fine, if I choose not to read them that is fine too. It is my chose to read just like it is their chose to post them.

I don't get offended by anyone's scripture, even if it is different from my beliefs. There is truth everywhere. Most of the time it is more alike than different.

Don't You Love...

Saturday, June 25, 2011

...it when you walk into a store and find something you wanted on sale? I went out to Lowes today after spending the morning cleaning a flowerbed and wishing I had some pentas plants to put in empty spaces. The first thing I zoned in on was 12 packs of varigated pentas plants for $12.98. Last year the same size plants cost me $2.98 each - Big savings!

Awesome find! I hope one day to do some landscaping around here. Hubby keeps telling me no, wait til he wants to pay someone to do it all. But I think it would be quite rewarding to do it myself.

Sudden Link aka Sudden Death

Friday, June 24, 2011

ISP finally came up last night about 8 but after two days, it was getting really irritating. Especially when I need to huddle and go! : )

Today is good but I'm late getting started after taking care of bill paying, running errands, etc.

My surgeon is no longer doing aftercare on his band patients except for a yearly followup so I will have to see someone else for fills. I asked whether I needed a fill since I was still losing, albeit slowly and was told no so I will meet the new doc later.

Trying to rest the knee and still do time on the treadmill along with my fitness plan exercises. Hey, I'm actually developing a waist.

Life is good!

Sounds like a busy day. I'm not familiar with aftercare; what kind of fills do you have to take?
