If you're anywhere in range of Tyler, Texas, don't miss a chance to go to Caldwell Zoo. This has to be one of the premier zoos anywhere: well-cared-for animals, clean environment, kid friendly, great cafe and gift shop, Siberian tigers. My school's fourth grade went a couple of weeks ago and had a wonderful time. Even though it pains me to see wild animals caged, I realize that some of these beautiful creatures would be slaughtered or die in the wild because of man's carelessness.
I particularly enjoyed the Wild Bird Walkabout where you can go into a large aviary and feed the birds treats. A gorgeous white parakeet of some sort made friends with me as soon as I walked in. When I had to leave with my class, I handed my treat stick to a mom holding a tiny toddler and it was a total delight to watch the expression of her face as she held the stick with the bird still perched and gobbling seed. Made my day!
Caldwell has a large picnic area for folks who bring their own picnics as well as the Chakula Cafe where they serve the best chili-cheese nachos in the world. I hadn't been to this zoo for more than 20 years when my niece and nephews were kids but I had such a super time, I'm going back as soon as school is out so I can meander along at my own pace.
