Time to reflect on where I started this healthy me journey and where I am. Tomorrow will mark 8 months with sparkpeople. So far I have lost 33 pounds or 22% of me! I have gone from a size 12 pant to a size 4. This is still hard for me to believe. Friday I bought 2 pairs of shorts at costco and had to take them back because they were too big. I wear a size 6 dress now. I purchased 2 new small belts last week. I was just having my husband make new holes for me(he must really love me to do these silly things for me). My bra size has gone from a 38D to a 34C (this is good my back doesnít hurt any more). I now wear a medium shirt. When I started this I thought Iíll lose a few pounds and then go back to my old ways. That hasnít happened yet and at this point I doubt it will. I have learned a lot along the way. Below are some of those things (not in anyorder):
1. My husband is the most supportive and encouraging person in my life. He is the cook in the house. He has modified the majority of the old family favorites to make them healthier for all of us. When he doesnít want to modify for all he will modify for just me. He understands when I go to work out in quiet and doesnít complain about it. He actually encourages me to do it.
2. Losing weight is a very hard thing to do, but not impossible with the right support system. Spark has been a blessing. I love all the tools and information that I find here (I learn something new here every day), but to me the people are what make the site work. This is from the members to the staff. I know that no matter what or when I can find support and encouragement out there.
3. Plateaus will happen! This is a hard thing to deal with. You are doing all the right things but the scale wonít move no matter what. Iíve learned to measure success in other ways than a scale. That pair of jeans suddenly fits again. I can do a longer work out. DH can put another hole in a belt as it is to big? Iíve learned to claim success in just knowing that I made the right food and exercise choices. If I change up my work outs and keep making the right choices the scale will catch up.
4. Donít compare yourself to others. Everyone is different. Donít measure your success by that of others. Challenges are a good thing, I love to participate in them, yet I see it as challenging my myself. So as I push myself to do something new that is a success to me. Comparing my one pound loss to someone elseís 4 pound loss, is to set oneself up for failure.
5. I can find the time to exercise if I really want to. No more excuses for not moving. Exercise is a choice! There are days that I donít want to move. That is all right it is my choice. No more beating myself up for it.
6. I enjoy exercising once I start, especially cardio (still working on the strength training but getting better with that as well).
7. I have willpower! I have the ability to make the right food choices! Iím by no means perfect but I can make the correct choices about 90% of the time. That is a vast improvement for me. If I stray then tomorrow is another day and I will begin again fresh.
8. The answer to mental or emotional issues is not food. This was a hard one for me to deal with at first. As the good choices became habits it became easier. So now if Iím starting to melt down I go to work out and think. I always feel better and more relaxed when Iím done.
9. By getting healthier physically, I am healthier mentally, spiritually and emotionally.
10. I have gained self-confidence not just by feeling better about how I look but by traveling on this journey and rediscovering me and the things I am capable of doing when I put my mind to it.
I have not yet met my ultimate weight loss goal but I am well on my way. I am more determined than ever to get there slow and steady. I have noticed that as my weight goes down I have to work harder to burn the calories. That is okay by me though as I am a stronger person now for deciding to start this journey to a healthier, happier me.
