Day 14 - Good day - now is time for me

Sunday, February 15, 2009

Active Challenge - I don't have a ball - I had one a couple of years ago, but the kids got hold of it and it is lost forever (they probably managed to pop it and didn't want me to know). Instead I made an effort to stand more during the day. Not hard on Saturday, I usually don't have a chance to sit down anyway!

Exercise Challenge - Strength & Cardio - Today was Curves day. My daughter was having back issues, which distracted me, so I only burned 535 calories, but still a good workout. After the workout, I did pushups, bicep, tricep and chest/shoulders with weights. I can't do more than about 8 pushups, but was pleasantly surprised to be able to do that many - I think I am making progress!

Flexibility Challenge - Did thorough stretch at Curves

Nutrition Challenge - Delaying this until workday. My weekend eating habits are so different from the routine of the weekdays that it doesn't make sense to try and make changes to the weekend. I have much better control M-F.

Mind/Body Challenge - didn't have a quiet moment until I was in bed - and I think I fell asleep before a minute was up, so it probably doesn't count anyway.

All in all not a bad day. Today I am treating myself to a "play day". I slept in, will have a relaxing breakfast in my jammies, then will go out to a movie (I haven't been in a movie theater for over a year, it has gotten SO expensive) and a nice lunch. While I won't go nuts at lunch, I am going to relax and have fun today. I will get in some exercise - if it was warmer, I'd do it outside. I may just have to go to a mall to walk - wouldn't that be a shame! Good thing it's a scheduled fun day.

It sounds like a fun day. I enjoy going to the movies too. My daughter takes me to all the chick flicks her BF doesn't want to see. It works for me. Have fun.

Day 13 - Lucky it's Friday

Saturday, February 14, 2009

Your Active Challenge - Accumulate at least 15 minutes of extra walking today.

I did this. I had several contracts to send out and since our secretary refuses to do correspondence (don't ask), I got up after typing each cover letter to copy at the copier across the office instead of doing them all together.

Your Exercise Challenge - Light Cardio

Was short on time so I did 20 minutes on the elliptical followed by 10 minutes of pilates abs and stretching.

Your Flexibility Challenge

See above, things were busy today, so I only did one real stretch - after my cardio

Your Nutrition Challenge - Examine your habits

How many times did you eat today? 3 meals and one snack.
How long did you go between your meals/snacks? breakfast I normally separate: my egg beaters cooked with onion, spinach, zucchini and low fat cheese at 7 then my oatmeal and almonds at 9:30

lunch between 11:30 and 12:00. generally homemade veggie soup - with onions, peppers, zucchini, green beans, spinach, white beans, tomatoes and lots of spices. I generally add a piece of chicken breast and some fruit.

Snack at 3:30 - on the way home from work. one can of low sodium v8 and an ounce of low fat cheese

Dinner is usually around 6 and changes, but generally includes lean protein and at least a cup of vegetables. Dessert is usually included and varies between strawberries with melted chocolate chips (just a few) or fatfree/lowfat ice cream.

How would you rate your overall energy for the day? energy isn't static during the day, but changes. I find that the amount time I spend just sitting at my desk affects if more than what I eat, unless I eat a heavy carb meal (which is usually a weekend problem). I am usually a little hungry within an hour after meals, but most of the time, its a background thing and doesn't bother me. I have noticed that I am finding myself wandering to the local coffeeshop for a cookie. So far I have kept myself to Snackwells, but this is a danger sign. I will probably change the protein at lunch to something a little more filling. Maybe a sandwich with a healthy carb would make lunch last longer.

When were you the most alert and energetic? Probably after lunch, but that is when I take my midday walk

How do you think what you ate affected your energy levels? I don't know. I have tried to load meals with lots of veggies and protein for fullness. The only other thing I can think to try is to add some healthy fat at meals to see if that keeps me full longer.

Your Mind/Body Challenge - spaced on this, which is bad. My daughter has been having stress related to an issue with one of her teachers. I had planned on doing this with her, but got tired and just forgot. We'll do this tomorrow, to see if it helps relax either one of us.

Yesterday was a pretty good day. I just need a couple more hours each day and we'll be golden.

Day 12 - Why do I say no and eat it anyway?

Friday, February 13, 2009

A pretty good day. Went to a baby shower in the afternoon. Was a little hungry, which is not unusual that time of day (almost time for my afternoon snack, but not quite). It was at a local restaurant, so there were appetizers and cake. At first refused both, then found myself hitting the appetizers after they were cold and picked over and ate half of the piece of cake before I realized what I was doing. (Neither the appetizers or cake were worth the effort) Pushed it away and was still OK for the day calorie-wise, but not happy with those choices. Once I said no to the food, and resisted the pressure from others, why do I cave? I've done this before and I don't understand why, will have to think about this.

Active Challenge - Did this. Very happy that the weather is better this time.

Exercise Challenge - CORE - After my regular Curves workout, I did my crunches, added some bicycle crunches, double leg lifts and banana. Felt good. After only two weeks on the crunches, 50 doesn't seem like a big deal anymore. And it may be my imagination, but I think the stomach is just a smidge flatter.

Flexibility Challenge - Big stretch at Curves, a little at work and again after the abwork.

Nutrition Challenge - My husband was doing grocery shopping today, so told him to look for something strange that we hadn't tried. He came home with a couple of mangoes. Very tasty, though I think I have to learn how to cut one open. Most of the flesh stuck to the core or the rind.

Mind and Body Challenge - Made an effort to get ready for bed early (meaning not as long after my bedtime as usual) and set aside 10 minutes to quietly sit in bed and read. Very relaxing.

OK, ready for day 13!

It took me a long to time to say no and mean it. Now I can go to a shower and look at the snacks and cake and not touch it. But that was a hard lesson to learn.
Love the fact that you took 10 minutes for yourself.

Hey that was a great ending to that blog! Yesterday was exceptionally bad so I'm just trying to work it off today. Happens. Keep up with those exercises and challenges - you can do this! We all can!

Learn from your experiences. (For myself, I can't tell myself I CANT have something, then I WANT it more. But I can tell myself that I CAN have it and just don't want it, that almost always works for me!)

Day 11 - Just don't sit down!

Thursday, February 12, 2009

Day 11 - still tired, but still plugging away.

Your Active Challenge - I don't usually do elevators unless absolutely necessary (I find them kind of scary - some of them bump along and don't feel very stable - ugh) and if I use an escalator, which is also unusual, I try to treat it as a stairway - unless it means pushing people out of the way (unless they really deserve it, heh, heh). So instead of this challenge, I did yesterday's alarm challenge. This time the alarm always seemed to hit when I was in the middle of something I couldn't just get up and walk away from (like talking to a really impatient doctor- excuse me while I get up and take a walk), but I used it as a reminder to move as soon as I could.

Your Exercise Challenge - Cardio -- I was hoping it would still be warm enough to go for a long walk after work, but it wasn't. So, I decided to do the elliptical, but was still hungry after my scheduled snack, so I sat at the computer and entered my food for the day to try and see where I was -- BIG mistake. Once I sat down, I was so tired that I didn't move until I had to get dinner started. No snack, no exercise. Lesson of the day - don't sit down!

I did do 30 minutes on the elliptical after dinner - usually, I struggle to do 20. I have a tendency to hit it at a speed that ensures I will get too tired to do it very long, so I monitored my speed and made sure I did a slower warmup. Then I increased speed, adding 30 second intervals of really pushing it. All in all, I did OK. Of course, my son complained that the exercise room smelled like I had been sweating in it, but I told him that was the point.

Your Flexibility Challenge - thoroughly stretched after cardio and in the morning - all this extra work is making mornings a little stiff.

Your Nutrition Challenge - I thought about this at lunch yesterday. After eating my homemade veggie soup (I tried for minestrone this time, but didn't get the spices quite right : - { ) , apple and grilled chicken breast, I was not completely full, but not really hungry either. I should have probably added something else to the meal - maybe a whole grain carb(?), because I found myself eating a couple of snackwell's cookies later.

Your Mind/Body Challenge - Get Organized - I did spend 10 minutes (all I found time for) cleaning off my desk. I've been needing to do this and should probably schedule 10 minutes a day, both at work and at home, until I get some of the mess under control at both locations.

Once again exercised heavy after dinner, then wasn't ready to go to bed when I should, so really dragging this morning. Even the caffeine isn't helping. Of course, we were also working on the start of the cold war (homework) until 9:00 last night, too, which doesn't help either.

Good for you My day was taken up with all my cleaning and baking but I did manage to get in my 300 reps on my iron horse. And the organizational thing I cleaned and organized my office and did my budet! Yeah real fun! emoticon

Day 10 - 1/3 of the month all ready!

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

Wow, all ready to day 10. I wish I could say that I felt a huge transformation happening, but mostly I just feel tired. I've upped my activity level quite a bit and always seem to get to bed later than I want. Then when I get there, I'm not always ready to sleep because I have been so busy trying to get everything in, I haven't had any downtime. Maybe getting in better shape will mean I will need less sleep - otherwise, we're going to have to add more hours into my evening!

Active Challenge - Today was nuts. My boss turned 30, so we (the group) had all kinds of nonsense going on. I don't think I had an opportunity to sit at my desk for more than an hour at a time, so I didn't really have a chance to do this one today.

Exercise - Today was Curves day, so I definitely did strength training and burned 595 calories. Then worked on abs and legs at home (while helping my daughter with her math homework).

Flexibility - Did my stretches at Curves then did some others after my abwork at home

Nutrition - No cravings today, but I have tried to distract myself when dealing with them in the past. It usually doesn't work too well for me. I do better by planning a small amount of whatever I'm craving into the day (usually it's chocolate, which is there in some form anyway - can't do away with the most important food group!)

Mind/Body - The hand massage was nice. Very relaxing - the rest of me was jealous.

Then let's bring on day ten!
And you're not alone in this getting to bed later than wanting too! My "normal" bedtime is ten sometimes nine but lately it's been pushed to eleven. Then I too am waking up tired. Tonight I'm hoping it's going to be earlier!
