Mystery solved? Could it be niacin flush?

Wednesday, October 06, 2010

Yesterday I had that weird "allergic reaction" with burning arms, face, neck chest and itching. I had to punch out early for a long lunch and it went away after I rested and had something to eat. I lost only 45 minutes of work and so had to stay late 45 minutes to make up the time.

I did some research on the internet and I have decided a very likely cause is niacin which I have been taking on my own for reducing cholesterol. I take a timed release formula and even then there can be flushing from that.

So my experiment will be no more niacin and see if that makes a difference. I have been getting quite severe flushing and then I probably panic and worry about what is happening. The time previous to this when it happened I just was going into the gym and as soon as I got in the swimming pool I improved almost immediately (cooled down the skin).

Yesterday at work I used cold compresses on my arms and that helped, also.

Time will tell but I think the mystery is solved. emoticon

Took a day off from gym ....

Tuesday, October 05, 2010

Napped in the car while hubby had his whirlpool and steam room visits. I actually fell asleep for a cat nap of about 20 minutes.

I went to bed early and think I may have actually gotten some real sleep last night as I did not feel as much like a zombie as I have on most mornings lately. I will be seeing the sleep specialist's nurse practitioner next Tuesday for an explanation of my sleep study and plan of care. I sure hope they have some good advice for me as I feel quite rundown from not sleeping properly.

A sleep study was the best thing I ever did. Changed my life! I hope you can find a remedy to your (lack of) sleep issues.

Fiasco of driving to St. Paul....due to 25 mile marathon through Mpls into St. Paul

Monday, October 04, 2010

The original plan yesterday was to get to my friend's house by 8:30 but I didn't leave until then. Halfway to her house I ran into a total traffic standstill near Lake Calhoun and had to find an alternate route around Cedar Lake, then through downtown and Highway 94, exiting on Hiawatha Avenue. It took me an extra half hour and at least 20 or more extra miles. So the original trip I figured was going to be 50 miles turned out to be about 75. By the time I got home I was so ready for the whirlpool but did swim for a full 30 minutes before getting my "water massage."

This morning I woke up a half hour early and reset my alarm so I could rest another hour cause I got those Monday morning blues.... emoticon

P.S. We did have a nice time having brunch at a nice place and I don't believe I overdid too much....

Sorry you needed to take an unexpected detour. But isn't that a good metaphor for life. When we face the unexpected we adjust our plan, detour if we must, but still head toward our destination.

I am sure your friend appreciated you efforts to take her to brunch. Have a great week. emoticon

Another bleary-eyed morning....

Sunday, October 03, 2010

I had to get up this morning at 6:00 as I am taking a friend and another friend of hers out for a Sunday breakfast (quiche is on the menu). Not sure what I will order as I haven't been to this place before. My friend does not drive and her friend cannot drive due to recent eye surgery. It is quite a jaunt from my house but consider it my good deed of the day and probably will be driving a total of 50 miles round trip to do this favor for my friend. There I go, tooting my own horn again. I just can't seem to help myself.

I would have liked to turn over and sleep in a couple more hours (of trying to sleep) but here I am sparking and waiting for my coffee to cook.

Speaking of coffee. If you have never had French press coffee, you should try it. I read somewhere that the reason it tastes so good is that there is not a paper filter which filters out the fat. (Who would think there could be fat in coffee?) I will check it out on the web if this is true and edit this paragraph if I find out otherwise. [Checked it out...apparently we are talking about a 10% increase in cholesterol, but 10% more than a miniscule amount to start with is probably insignificant!!!] I will drink my occasional French press coffee without worrying about it....

This afternoon I will be getting in my half hour of swimming/pool exercises. My hubby really likes going to the gym, especially the steam room and whirlpool where he talks to the other old guys. It also gets me to the gym for my almost daily sessions in the pool and I think it is really helping my fibromyalgia and stiffness issues.

My daughter called late yesterday afternoon and said she got the package I sent with her blue sequined dress which I found at a thrift store for $6.99. She is thrilled and it fits perfectly. She is going to use it as the base for her mermaid costume for Halloween....she really was excited. She said she was having a costume high on top of a sushi high. I was happy that she was happy!!! emoticon

P.S. I will soon be getting a $200 Target gift card from my health insurance company for taking an 8-week online class on stress (I believe it helped me because as I journaled I realized a lot of the worrying I do is not productive and I did find solutions to some of my stressors that have been helpful to my mental state...)In addition because of taking that class and doing other healthful things, I will be given a $500 reduction on my out of pocket expenses on health insurance costs in 2011. I have all sorts of things I would like to spend my gift certificate on....I go to a super Target and they even have a grocery store with fresh produce!!!! What a deal!!!!!

It just occurred to me I can use coupons when I spend my gift certificate and I have one for pizza, buy one get one free...so I basically will be getting 2 pizzas for free...also have other grocery coupons to stretch out that $200 even more...

The drive to my friend's house turned out to be complicated due to a huge running marathon through Minneapolis (starting halfway over to her house by one of the 10 lakes in the city) and into St. Paul to the capitol building. (The restaurant we went to was near the route as it went through St. Paul.) I had to drive an extra 20 miles in order to get to my friend's house because of all the detours and traffic jams.... emoticon

Sounds like things are going well. Nice to hear and isn't it nice when we can do little things for our kids that excite them. I was excited for you and her when I saw the dress being a hit. Enjoy spending the gift cards and glad you're finding ways to deal with stresses. It would do us all well to do the same.

Needed the weekend...badly!!! Need prayers for my daughter....

Saturday, October 02, 2010

I have been fantasizing (yep, checked it on spell check) about retiring lately because it has been so hard to sit at work, to walk to and from my car at various places, go up and down stairs (avoiding when possible) and sitting for prolonged periods of time (it's the tin-man effect).

I have been through these mobility issues before when I was 285 lbs and thought when I got a reprieve for a few years I was "over fibromyalgia" but apparently I am having a flare up since overdoing last Saturday going for a 1 mile walk which turned out to be too hilly for my back. That "domino effect" is still working in that when one part becomes painful it affects the whole body. I decided to tough it out (still swimming almost daily for 30 minutes plus other stretches and knee exercises) for another week before checking with orthopedic doctor.

My latest concern is my daughter. She got insurance a few months ago and she saw the doctor for something and they said because she had seen a doctor about 9 months ago before she got insurance they would not pay as it was a preexisting condition. Now she is having eye pain with other eye symptoms which sounds like something she should be seen for immediately, but she was seen for this condition also about 9 months ago and so she won't go to the doctor because she will have to pay for any treatment and she is waiting it out hoping she can last until the preexisting clause is satisfied. She jokingly said she would wait until she is blind before she goes to the doctor. (Something that is tearing me up.) I am praying for a solution for her and also praying her eyes don't get worse...a possible cure???. I hope anyone who reads this can help me out with some prayers for her and any suggestions about what to do would be appreciated. Thanks...

P.S. My daughter called this morning (she lives 1000 miles away) and reassured me her vision is okay but she has discomfort and swelling in the eye. I still wish she would see a doctor about this. Thanks for your prayers... emoticon

I know what you mean ! A meeting I had Friday afternoon was canceled and I was so, so happy about that because it meant that the weekend started an hour early!
I hope you feel better soon. You know what you need to do to keep your condition livable so keep doing that. Slow and steady. Keep going! As for your daughter, that is so unfair! Nevertheless, I would urge her to go to the doctor. Nothing is worth risking our eyes for. Please hang on!

You have my prayer. Turn everything over to God and let him help you through this. I understand why your daughter jokes about her vision. If she didn't joke about the situation, then it would be too hard to deal with. emoticonfor both of you.
