Happy to be able to walk around the block last night...sad news about sister...

I was a bit worried I wouldn't be able to get around the block (1/2 mile) before sunset but took a chance anyhow and truly amazed myself by making it in about 15 minutes which means I was able to walk 2 miles per hour. This doesn't sound like much but about a month ago my speed was approximately 1 mile per hour after I had a quad muscle tear during physical therapy. That, unfortunately, set my recovery back by about 3-4 weeks. I had to spend one week in a knee immobilizer and got out the walker, too, as I was afraid I would fall and cause more injury.

I haven't been checking my emails lately and was surprised to see my neice wrote me 2 emails (one last Wednesday and one on Saturday morning just before I checked my emails) to tell me my sister probably will be dying soon. She just got out of ICU on Saturday and she has an infection of her kidneys which the antibiotics do not seem to be able to get under control. They plan to transfer her to hospice soon as I assume they have made her DNR/DNI. I probably will be hearing soon that she has passed on. She lives in Duluth which is about 150 miles from here and I am grateful I will be able to drive up there when I need to. emoticon

    I just came to your SparkPage after you commented on my Sunrise pictures and read your blog. I'm So Sorry to hear about your Sister. Do have comfort in knowing that she is in God's hands and He is taking good care of her.

    I'm so sorry about your sister's health; I will pray for you to have strength to get through this. Sometimes life just plain stinks big-time. Good for you that you made the walk faster than you thought! It shows how well you're recuperating.

Sleep better since allowed to sleep on side...

I slept an extra 2+ hours this morning. Plan to go to farmer's market to get fresh tomatoes and then on to the gym to swim in the outdoor pool after that.

This last week at work was generally good and I think I almost made the quota. It was close and I kept my nose to the grindstone all week long.

Next week our employer is having an employee appreciation week with a pancake breakfast one day and smoothies after lunch (I'd better not have much to eat so I can have a small serving of breakfast) and another day they are having pulled pork sandwiches (if I plan ahead I think a half serving of that will be about right to keep me under my calories for the day, if I have a small breakfast and dinner). Not having any food is a suspect thing around there so I figure having small servings will be a good compromise. There will also be some games with little prizes (most of which are unhealthy things to eat, though the company has recently tried to encourage healthy incentives, etc.) The company actually has shown an improvement by not serving us pizza as they usually did in the past and have changed the beverage to plain water. It will be interesting to see what they give us for desert.

Finally we are having some nicer weather with lower humidity.

    It sounds like you have a great employer! It is hard to resist the special treats, but learning to eat "thin" is a challenge we can meet. Plan ahead and enjoy the day.

I was complaining to my daughter that I am tired of seeing about local murders and fatal car accidents on t.v. She told me not to watch. I just wish they would at least balance the news with some good news for a change.

She called me long distance to read the local "Police Blotter" a report of local police calls in a small town in Montana. Quite a few involve wild and/or domestic animals and she and I suspect the person who writes the article is a humorist. Anyhow, she gets me laughing everytime she calls to read me the Police Blotter and it is nice to hear her laugh, too. emoticon

Slept pretty good considering there were thundersttorms all night. I think I woke up only once during the night. The therapist said I could try sleeping on my side to help (I had been told to only sleep on my back with my knees straight which I have found difficult.)

I remember some negative talk when I heard the alarm go off, but after I said, "I don't want to get up," I added, "But I gotta get going!! and afterall, TGIF!!!"

I think my food choices have allowed me to eat more but stay within my calorie target. One thing I noticed is that my potassium intake one day was over 5000! Most of that was from eating 2 cups of beet greens. Perhaps next time I should eat only 1 cup for a serving of those. I also am surprised how much potassium is in cucumbers. I usually can eat 2 a day of those but yesterday at lunch I lost my appetite for them and actually threw away half of a cucumber cause it just didn't "hit the spot" as usual. (I also noticed it was a bit too ripe with lots of big seeds in it. Guess I prefer the young ones.)

Anyhow, today will be a short day at work (only 5 hours) due to going to work late in order to swim in the therapy pool before work and leaving work early to go to physical therapy. Overall, my pain level is getting better, but I still need to work on strenthening the muscles around the knees. My gait is not very good yet and I feel off balance when I walk and I walk quite slowly due to discomfort and/or weakness. I guess I will need to talk to the therapist about these issues. Hope everybody has a great day. I went to bed early last night and so when it was time to get up it wasn't such a struggle. I think I got about 8 hours of good sleep. I will go to bed early tonight again and hope to have a repeat of that. emoticon
