X-rays show no fractures...

Saturday, January 03, 2009

Saw orthopod yesterday and he took lots of x-rays of neck and back. No compression fractures from my fall and no neurologic deficits. He prescribed 6 weeks of physical therapy 2-3 times a week which I am sure will help with the spasms as I have had this in the past after other injuries. I am still thankful nothing broke. My new boots (Sorels good to -25 degrees) are very steady to walk in but weigh a lot. (Perhaps good exercise for my legs.) Whirlpooled yesterday half an hour and today plan to swim at least 15 minutes in addition to whirlpooling. Have to get back to my original plan to swim 3 times a week to keep myself loosened up. Things are improving daily and have to focus on the positives instead of negatives. (Remind anyone of an old Bing Crosby tune?...oops age is showing..love those old songs). Have a great January day!!!

Miracle on 38th Street...

Wednesday, December 24, 2008

It could have been so much worse... I am grateful that when I fell on the ice in the street that I didn't get run over or break any bones. On Monday of this week I went to the fish market to buy Lutefisk and decided to go across the street to the Mexican grocery to get another delicacy (fried pork skin for hubby). I slipped on the ice, feet flew out from under me and I landed flat on my back in the street at the corner. I couldn't get up and had to crawl to the curb and sidewalk and was scrambling as the light was going to change soon. I still could not get up when I reached the sidewalk and one woman stopped her car and helped me up. It was so slippery and I was not wearing boots (I just ordered some on line tonight). Since both knees are pretty sore I struggled to get up and so without that woman's help I would have had to wait probably a long time as everyone seemed oblivious to my plight. I have a sore back and neck but considering the hard fall I had, it is a minor (or major) miracle that I didn't end up with a bad injury. I still am amazed that so many people saw me fall (or did they?) and did nothing. But I am equally amazed that I don't even have bruising or other signs of trauma aside from the soreness in my back and neck. I even was able to work on Tuesday, but if the soreness continues I will at least get checked out by my doctor to be sure I am okay (but so far I feel okay). Thanks to my guardian angel. emoticon

Thank goodness you are doing okay. Thank goodness you weren't run over. Thank goodness there were no broken bones. Most of all thank goodness for that one angel that did stop to help you. Hope you get to feeling better.

    Teddy -

What a terrible way to spend a day. What's wrong with our society? I can't imagine not stopping and helping someone. Anyway, I hope you have a speedy recovery and if you do go to the doctor it's nothing serious.
Take care

Glad you didn't break anything falling. I've had a couple of friends who had serious wrist and leg fractures from falling on the ice.

Lots of hugs. emoticon

Teddy...you have had a rash of challenges and I suggest you thank God for sending that guardian angel to be there for you. It's wonderful when things like that happen and we can say Thanks to someone we never knew before and may not know ever...but they were there when they were needed.

Foot pain......

Saturday, December 13, 2008

So I was sleeping on Saturday night and cannot recall straining myself or slipping, etc. and I got a bad pain in my foot (thought it was my ankle). Gradually over the next few days the other foot started hurting, too and then my knees, hips and finally back and neck from walking off balance. Turns out I have an accessory navicular (extra bone in my foot) that is rubbing and irritating the tendon in the arch of the foot (bilateral, both feet). Apparently I have had this condition all my life and now at age 62 it is symptomatic. I have had plantar spurs (heel spurs) and this pain is almost as bad. However, Dr. is trying conservative measures and hopes that will work to relieve the pain. So I get to wear two ankle braces (heavy duty cloth with straps) and need to take it easy for 6 weeks. Eventually will try physical therapy and custom arch supports. The last resort would be surgery to remove the extra bone and reattach the tendon. Sounds horrible especially since it is both feet. I will be a good patient and follow doctor's orders and am hoping for the best. Plan to whirlpool and do light swimming to burn up at least some of those holiday calories. (The amount of food at the workplace is ridiculous. Apparently everyone I work with thinks of food as synonymous with the holidays.) Gotta go to bed now and get some rest.

Well it may not be good news but at least you know what's causing the problem. I hope that the braces help and you can avoid surgery. Take care of yourself and glad to hear you're following Dr.'s orders.

That was sure a nasty little surprise for you at age 62! Who'd a thought something like that was going on, but at least they can do something to help you.

Hurt my left ankle...somehow...

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

I woke up on Saturday night with an achey ankle. I don't remember twisting my ankle but have been limping and even got out my old cane. Feel like an old "crip," in fact my cubicle neighbor at work called me a Crip (in a good natured way, though). Then that made my right foot/ankle hurt and my knees, and then, of course, my back and finally my neck got into the act. I haven't had a flare up of my fibromyalgia or arthritis for almost three years now so I am dumfounded by this as I don't know what brought it on. It could be a lot of things, the most likely culprit is my recent lack of exercise and my weight creeping up and just wear and tear on my joints. I have an appointment with orthopedist on Thursday. In the mean time I am "taking it easy" and going to gym and exercising in the whirlpool. Hope this is just a muscle strain. emoticon

Take care of yourself and let those muscles rest a little. Maybe the weather is contributing to the flareup.

Gotta start exercising again...feeling rotten...

Thursday, December 04, 2008

I have been sick off and on for about 2 months and keep making excuses not to exercise. But yesterday had a real reason to stay out of the pool. I cut my hand at work when trying to remove the seed from an avocado. Bled a lot and then bandage came off and started bleeding again when I got to the gym. I know I could have walked on the treadmill but forgot my shoes at home. When I got home I went to bed early and could have walked on the treadmill at home. Sure have plenty of opportunities but seem to lack ambition. As Nike says, Just do it!!! I promise today I will walk 3 miles one way or another (on treadmill or in real life!!!). emoticon
