Heat wave coming...

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

The heat index is supposed to be about 100 this afternoon. I hope the forecast is wrong.

Since I went to bed really early last night it only stands to reason I woke up and had stiffness during the night. I didn't do much exercise yesterday as I was tired from not sleeping the night before.

Today I have PT after work today and then plan to go to the pool at the gym after that. I promise myself to take it easy.

Next Monday I will have to work full time which I am not looking forward to. Hopefully I will be sleeping better by then. I am thinking of trying Melatonin to help with the sleep.

Therapy went well. I have good motion in the knee up to 125 degrees. The thing I need to work on is strength. The therapist said once a week will be often enough as long as I do my daily exercises. I happened to mention I have a TENS unit that was prescribed for neck injuries quite a few years ago and she said the TENS unit could also help the pain in my knees. I am anxious to try it out but have to track down some new jel-pads before I can do that. I hope the therapy office can order those for me. I used to get them from my chiropractor but I haven't been to see him for quite a few years.

I understand your feelings about the heat wave. We have it too and I am not happy either. I don't mind the heat as much as the humidity that goes along with it in our part of the country.

I know you will get though it and that next week will go just fine for you. Just take one day at a time and everything will work out.

Melatonin has helped my sleep but this morning I woke up hot at 3:30 am and just could not go back to sleep. Had the fan blowing on me and air set at 72. But the melatonin has helped. I don't have drugged after effects at all.

A new week...oh, boy!!!!

Monday, July 26, 2010

Slept better last night but it would be nice to sleep all the way through for a change. I didn't count, but think I was up about 4 times during the night due to knee stiffness. I am about to do 10 minutes on the recumbent bike before work this morning. That should help me walk from the ramp to my desk without a cane.

I have decided also to clean out my purse as that seems to be getting heavier and heavier lately. Perhaps I should change to a smaller purse as the one I have probably weighs 4 lb when it is empty. LOL emoticon

I have given up carrying a purse--have a small wallet that fits in pockt. Chiropractor told me it caused a lot of my back problems and my sore shoulder--it weighed less that a pound. Since I gave it up--no more backaches (sciatia).
Please take it easy--Enough setbacks - take baby steps then walk then run. emoticon

I have trouble sleeping so I know how you feel , I've come to the realization that waking up a few times a night is just the norm for me. once I exercise in the morning I'm good to go for the day!

I'm sorry you're having trouble sleeping. I know how aggravating it can be. But I am glad last night was better for you.

I hear you on the purse! Cleaning my purse out and/or getting a smaller purse has been on my to-do list for about three months now. Maybe we can make a contest about it on the message board and see how often women do this!

Another night of discomfort...

Sunday, July 25, 2010

I finally had to get out of bed about 5:30 a.m. due to back pain and knee pain. The only exercise I did yesterday is walk around the farmer's market for about 20 minutes and swim for about 30 minutes. Apparently that may have been overdoing it. I did do some of my PT stretches and exercises but right now I am just sitting in a recliner and thinking about walking around the house a bit.

I wish I would get over this varying between exercising and having pain......

Sorry about your pain. I hurt my knees at the gym and the doctor told me I was trying to do too much and the muscles needed time to heal. Do only what your body lets you do.

Living with pain is so tiring and difficult. Perhaps your doctor can help with medication. I have a pain prescription that I will take only when I am desperate for some rest. Just be gentle with yourself and only do a little until you heal. Some activity is necessary but don't try to do too much. Feel better soon.

It seems there is a fine line between "too much" and "not enough". emoticon I'm having increased pain, esp at night and I didn't have a muscle tear. I keep telling myself "patience and persistence" emoticon Sending healing emoticon and emoticon thoughts your way.

Hang in there. You've been doing so well. Maybe a day of rest would be good today.

Thanks Wobbles12 for your advice. However, with sore knees and back I am afraid to get in a bathtub. I will get to the gym today and spend at least 15 minutes in the whirlpool and try to limit exercising in the swimming pool. emoticon

I know it is really hard to do, but maybe you just need to stay off that knee today and let it rest.

I am sorry to hear you're in pain-maybe try a Epsom salt bath and maybe get a massage? (from a friend, family member or professional) I hope you feel better soon!

May have overdone exercise..again...

Saturday, July 24, 2010

I did 10 minutes on the recumbent bike before work, did 30 minute PT session after work and then went to pool for 30 minutes (gentle exercises) and found I had pretty intense discomfort last night and went to bed early. It is Saturday morning and finally had to get out of bed at 5:00 a.m. (no rest for the wicked). I would have liked to sleep in but any position for too long is just intolerable. So here I am in my recliner with my laptop on my good leg. Today I am going to be less aggressive in terms of exercise but on the other hand I am not going to lie around by any means. Next time I have therapy I will limit the swimming. emoticon

It does sound like you were too diligent in your exercise. The pool may be better for you than the bike. Just listen to your body and stop earlier than when you are hurting.

Get well soon!

I know the pool is great because things don't hurt so much but at the same time I think sometimes you don't realize how much work you have done until after you get out. Maybe the wicked do need some rest today!

yesterday went for 15 minute walk

Friday, July 23, 2010

I was tired when I got home from work and took a nap in the afternoon. Before I went to bed I did go for a 15 minute walk (stroll). I do not have speed yet but want to be able to get all the way around the block in the next week (it is close to 1/2 mile). This afternoon I am scheduled for PT in the afternoon and hope to get some more advice about exercising. I have had a lot of stiffness and discomfort since the muscle tear in my leg. Icing during the night helped.

Way to go Teddy. Keep at it. Walk just one or two steps more today than you did yesterday and soon you will be up to speed. I know how hard it is when you have physical problems. In 2005 the doctors found a blockage in my heart. When I came out of the hospital I couldn't walk from the car to the house without getting tired. Each day I just walked one or two steps more than I did the day before and now I walk two miles a day. Persistence pays off. emoticon

Small steps eventually lead to big things! I just started SparkPeople 2 weeks ago. I'm down 5lbs already but yesterday was the first day I tried to excercise. I did a 15 minute walk too!! I'm promising myself right now to do at least 15 mintues today.

speed is not that necessary. yea for the 15 minutes. think of all the people without an injury that don't even try to do anything. as my mom would say, "IT'S ALL GOOD". she also went through pt for an injury and they will be working you out. good luck.
