Struggling to stay active....

Sunday, July 18, 2010

I had my first PT after the tear of my quad muscle about 10 days ago. I have been given a list of only 4 exercises to do 15 reps x 2 and to do them twice a day. So far I have done those exercises only once a day as I am having a great difficulty moving the knee and have to grin and bear it. I spend a lot of time "thinking" about doing the exercises and have to really psych myself up to do them. So far I have found easing into those exercises by getting on my recumbent bike for 10 minutes to warm up and sometimes icing before doing the prescribed exercises is the only way to erase my "fear of discomfort." Yesterday I even had to take a pain pill before getting to the dreaded exercises.

I have had to take it slowly and change my exercises a bit so they are not so painful. I will be discussing the changes I had to make with my therapist when I see her again this coming week. In the meantime I am trying to go to the gym once a day to swim (aerobic water exercises) and ROM exercises in the whirlpool. I also am going to try walking to the end of the block and back and eventually around the block once a day.

As they say, baby steps....

Take it slowly. After my surgery my doctor said my only guideline was to use my common sense. If I was tired I should rest and if it hurt I should stop doing it. I know for someone as active as you it must be really tough not to push it. But better to go slow now and eventually get back up to your usual speed than to hurt yourself again and be set back even further.

Walking pretty well with no knee immobilizer and put away the walker...

Friday, July 16, 2010

I used only my cane to make sure I didn't lose my balance as I used a walker and knee immobilizer for six days. I haven't done my exercises today yet and just got up from an afternoon nap. Right now I am icing and then I am going to get on the recumbent bike for 10 minutes and then will do my exercises.

Pretty good news from doctor, including no surgery needed.

Thursday, July 15, 2010

However, he said the tear could take 6 months for total recovery. I told him I was worried about scar tissue. He said I need scar tissue to heal the tear. I explained I was worried about scar tissue that would inhibit my knee motion. He said I could restart therapy immediately and I was able to get an appointment with the PT department in his building within half an hour. Luckily I have lost only about 15 degrees of motion of the knee so I am glad I can discontinue resting and wearing the knee immobilizer.

I was given ultrasound treatment to reduce swelling and pain and then started on beginning exercises to build up strength and range of movement.

I am happy with the therapy and am hopeful I won't have any more tears of my quadriceps muscles.

Good news indeed for you. I'm impressed you were able to start PT today. I called several weeks ago for PT for the bursitis in my leg, couldn't get a appt. for evaluation and treatment plan until the 20th of this month, sure hope they will be able to give me some help. I had a partial knee replacement on the knee of this leg and the plan was so like whrn the knee was in bad shape and thought I would need a total replacement, was glad that wasn't the cbut the bursitis does put limits on it.

Hi! I am SO excited for you that you won't need to have surgery!! I have a herniated/bulging/degenerated disc in my lower back and I am waiting and waiting for approval for a procedure that wouldn't be as invasive as removing the disc. PT has really helped in the meantime and I am so excited for myself that I am probably going to have worked my first full 40 hour work week in well over a year!

Congrats and keep on working those exercises!!

Seeing doctor today...hoping for good diagnosis...

Thursday, July 15, 2010

Hopefully I have only a minor tear of one of the quadriceps muscles that will heal in 2-3 weeks with rest. My main concern is scar tissue hindering my recovery from total knee replacement 8 weeks ago (May 21st). My recovery was going as planned until at therapy a week ago I tried to raise my surgery knee to get on the leg press and something snapped. I felt immediate severe pain and broke down in tears and sobbing for at least 5 minutes. The therapist said it was probably a muscle spasm and I was not convinced of this so went to my doctor the next morning. He told me to wear my knee immobilizer and take it easy for a week and come back.

I am trying to be hopeful that this is only a minor setback and no further surgery is necessary.

I have been going to work and just getting in and out of my chair to get things off the printer has been an ordeal. I am sure my coworkers are tired of my moaning and groaning they have heard all week.

My doctor appointment is this afternoon and until then I am in the dark as to the actual diagnosis.

You think exercise is hard? How about not exercising?

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

I am having a problem not exercising. Dr. told me to wear knee immobilizer when I am up and rest this week. I tried some exercises with my good leg this morning before getting out of bed. I feel like a sloth and am reminding myself not to get depressed due to lack of exercise. I really need to at least do some seated exercises today at a minimum. I didn't have time to go to the gym for whirlpool yesterday but I know I will go today NO MATTER WHAT as I know that will feel good. emoticon

It is probably very difficult for anything after you go to work. Try to get to the water on Sat. and Sun. and dont stress out about it. You cant do it all. I try to eat super healthy on days I am not moving around as much like when it is 100 outside with the heat index

I hurt my shoulder/arm a couple of months ago and have been careful not to use it but I guess I will have to go to the Dr. to see whats up soon. It hurts to sleep on it and to push open a door, etc. I do go to the Y and move around in the warm water pool for about an hour 3x per week but I just retired so I can do that now.

Keep me posted on your recovery. Thinking about you.

My promise to myself to go to the gym to whirlpool no matter what was not kept due to a storm and super high heat index 106 and just wanting to hide away in my airconditioned house. Tomorrow after work I am seeing the doctor. I don't feel improved more than 10% over last week. Hopefully it will be better than that.

Try to do some upper body strength training seated with dumbbells. At least you are moving and building some muscle at the same time.

Great point - just ask a pregnant woman on bed rest, or for that matter, someone who just can't do the things we take for granted, like walk to the mailbox, or up the stairs. Do what you can, but keep doing! emoticon

I, too, have not been able to exercise as I would like and I hate it, but...I'm trying to build back up slowly and a little is better than nothing at all. Hang in there as it will come and things will get better, have faith. Take good care of yourself while things are coming together.
