Went to pool yesterday...

The weather was perfect for the outdoor pool at the gym. I spent 30 minutes in the pool and spent about half of the time just relaxing and floating....I did not overdo and did get a good night's sleep last night.

Today is Thursday and I am so ready for the weekend.

Went to therapy yesterday...reminded about baby steps

I told the therapist I went to the swimming pool 3-4 days in a row and on Sunday was exercising in the pool for 30+ minutes and that night had a bad time with pain. She said I should go every other day until I am stronger and try to gradually increase my activity. She also told me to keep my leg from twisting when I am in bed by putting pillows around it. Today I have to take my husband to the doctor and so I probably won't go to the pool after work. I will start to walk to the end of the block and back today, however.

    Three to four days in a row is a lot, listen to the therapist. Need to gradually heal and rushing things can do more damage. Take care, enjoy your walk and good luck to you!

On the mend...with "baby steps" in the pool...

I managed to work just fine and even did my "quotas" in spite of needing my walker to get from the ramp to my office. When I got home I rested about an hour and then hubby and I went to the gym where I only whirlpooled for just 10 minutes. When I got home hubby made dinner and I rested with ice on my knee. Before sleeping I took a pain pill and did my PT exercises and then iced and slept so much better than the night before. I am going to take it easy with swimming and today after PT I will try walking in the water in the pool for exercise and then whirlpool. I think yesterday's flare up was from just doing too much in the pools on Sunday. I keep forgetting about "baby steps." emoticon

    It's so hard to be patient when we are mending! But it sounds like you're listening to your body well. Keep up with the slow baby steps and good luck.

    Working in the pool is so wonderful! I remember when I was recovering from my surgeries, the pool really helped a lot!

I thought activity would make me feel better....

Both knees are stiff today. During the night I had severe pain but didn't take pain pill due to not wanting to be groggy for drive to work. Should have taken something about midnight and eneded up tossing and turning and finally put ice on knee an hour ago. I hope I am able to stay at work today as I am on the verge of being "put on report" for taking too much unscheduled time from work in terms of "number of incidents." My last incident was incurred the day I left work to see the doctor regarding my muscle tear. Hopefully my knees will loosen up and be less painful soon. I did 45 minutes of gentle water exercises yesterday and perhaps that was too much. I will cut back my sessions to 20 minutes until I am feeling better. My next therapy session is tomorrow and I will ask for advice from the therapist.

    I managed yesterday just fine but used my walker for work. May have looked a bit pathetic but I felt it. I did go whirlpool for 10 minutes and went to bed early with ice on my knees and did my exercises for PT before sleeping. This morning feel rested and better.

Struggling to stay active....

I had my first PT after the tear of my quad muscle about 10 days ago. I have been given a list of only 4 exercises to do 15 reps x 2 and to do them twice a day. So far I have done those exercises only once a day as I am having a great difficulty moving the knee and have to grin and bear it. I spend a lot of time "thinking" about doing the exercises and have to really psych myself up to do them. So far I have found easing into those exercises by getting on my recumbent bike for 10 minutes to warm up and sometimes icing before doing the prescribed exercises is the only way to erase my "fear of discomfort." Yesterday I even had to take a pain pill before getting to the dreaded exercises.

I have had to take it slowly and change my exercises a bit so they are not so painful. I will be discussing the changes I had to make with my therapist when I see her again this coming week. In the meantime I am trying to go to the gym once a day to swim (aerobic water exercises) and ROM exercises in the whirlpool. I also am going to try walking to the end of the block and back and eventually around the block once a day.

As they say, baby steps....

    Take it slowly. After my surgery my doctor said my only guideline was to use my common sense. If I was tired I should rest and if it hurt I should stop doing it. I know for someone as active as you it must be really tough not to push it. But better to go slow now and eventually get back up to your usual speed than to hurt yourself again and be set back even further.
