Finally back home with internet service....

Sunday, May 30, 2010

I was in rehab from last Monday until today (Sunday) so it was only 6 days and I am home. I had only one complaint about the rehab facility....they didn't have wifi. So I have not Sparked since last Sunday or Monday.

My sense of time has been a bit altered by being under the influence of narcotics, so sometimes I forget which day what happened. It is getting better, though, I think.

I had enough phone calls while I was away from home. I will probably be catching up with my spark friends soon. I haven't even looked at my spark page yet.

I got home about noon today and had lunch and took a nap. It is now 4:00 p.m. and it is time to feed the cats.

I might return to the rehab place to volunteer playing the piano for the residents. I played for 20 minutes 3 times while I was there, and over exercised my right knee when using the pedal on the piano so have to hold off on piano playing for awhile until my muscles are stronger. I also cannot drive for about a month. Everyone except one resident (there's one in every crowd) liked my playing. The nurses especially showed appreciation. (I think they were weary of the Bing Crosby CD that was playing quite a bit while I was there.) I was surprised how well my hands held up to the exercise of playing the piano. My hand surgeon said it would be good exercise and would strengthen my hands (of course, if I didn't overdo).

I had a honey of roommate (Joan was 83 or so and was in very good spirits in spite of recooping from a broken hip with replacement). We got along well and were both early risers so never bothered the other one when we were sleeping or getting dressed for the day.

I had three lovely elderly women as my dining partners, Ingeborg, Elsie and Helen. They were very nice, though their memories were worse than mine but nothing I couldn't handle. Elsie told me four days in a row that yesterday she had a nice picnic (she really did go to a picnic but only once). The first morning at breakfast I wore my I Love Lutefisk shirt and they all thought it was a strange thing to wear and after that I wore more normal clothes.

The food was excellent and I must have eaten fish every day (which suits me just fine).

The care was excellent and it was quiet at night so most nights I got enough sleep. Sometimes I woke up every hour, but usually slept 2 to 3 hours at time which was pretty good for only being about 9 days out from surgery today. I probably will sleep even better in my own comfy bed in familiar surroundings.

Well, I'll be back tomorrow morning to blog and do some more catching up with my spark friends. **** I have missed you all.********* emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I enjoyed reading your blog. I admire your positive attitude and it sounds like your recovery is moving along. It was very nice of you to play the piano and I'm sure they would appreciate you playing whenever you're up to it.

I was so glad to see your blog when I opened up Sparks tonight. Glad to see you are recovering well. Just remember to take it easy and do what the Doc tells you to do.
My husband was in rehab after his stroke, so I know how much that piano playing was appreciated by all the residents (and their visitors as well).
Have a good nights sleep in your own bed!

the fog is lifting...

Monday, May 24, 2010

I noticed my blog this a.m. had a few errors regarding which day I was talking about.....My memory is getting better. Apparently the memory problem is due to anesthesia and narcotics (love those narcotics). I was having the severe pain and problems eating yesterday and today is better but the knee hurts quite a bit when I walk and do PT. Today I only bent the knee to 95 degrees but considering the pain I have that is considered good.

I have found which nursing facility I am going to (Friendship Village) which is a very nice place even nicer than the place I stayed at last year for my left knee.

I have plenty of people at my beck and call here and because I am considered a fall risk (I have fallen at home a few times in the past year) I have to get someone to help me up and down from bed every time I go to bathroom or want something out of reach from my bed.

I have a friend who is going to drive me from the hospital to the rehab facility. Otherwise transportation would probably be 50 to 100 dollars (it is only about 5 miles from here, so I am glad I have a friend who can do this for me). I will be there about 10 days.

My husband has called me a lot and sometimes I have to tell him I am too tired to talk or some other excuse as I really don't want to talk to anyone more than 5 to 10 minutes.

I am so glad my first choice of facilities was approved (it depends on availability).

Yesterday was not a good day...

Monday, May 24, 2010

The pain block in my leg was discontinued today and I had a lot of pain...also had upset stomach and oxygen saturations were lower than usual. I spent a lot of time in bed and getting up is painful. I hope today is a better day. PT went well and I got my knee to move to 100 degrees, but later in the day I had lots of pain... I am still not allowed to get out of bed by myself and if I forget the bed alarm will go off...I accidentally leaned off the bed once yesterday and I heard a loud beeping and thought it was a fire alarm....however, the nurse came running and I found out it was the bed alarm.

I am scheduled to transfer to rehab today. I still don't know which one I will be going to.

Yesterday between PT and feeling awful..I actually forgot to spark. I had perfect attendance going in May but spent a lot of time resting and/or sleeping. I was probably catching up on the sleep I missed the night before.

I am looking forward to swimming and whirlpooling in about a month or so. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

    Hi Teddy,

I'm new to this team and scheduled for my first knee replacement on June 30. What an inspiration you are emoticon
I spent the weekend reading most of your blogs and feel like I have a road map to prepare for my surgery. I was amazed when I saw your blog the day after surgery. I hope each day continues your improvement and you are up walking with your new knee in no time emoticon

I thought I remembered, but I didn't

Saturday, May 22, 2010

It hurts a lot more than I remembered. I think I progressed faster last time...I don't remember it hurting this much..stiff upper lip.....I know I will get better soon....gotta work hard at rehab...

Last night I didn't sleep more than an hour all night due to alarms going off.... Hope tonight goes better...

Yeah, hospitals are no place to sleep. Nurses have to keep checking in on you plus the noises and alarms going off. I hope it gets better for you. Hope you are getting enough pain meds. My knee did not hurt for the first few days. Then the block wore off and oh-my-gosh.
I am glad you came through alright and hope you have a speedy recovery--I continue to pray for you-you have come such a long way.

Today's the day...knee replacement....

Friday, May 21, 2010

I am thirsty already and it is only 6:00 a.m. and wishing I could have coffee, too.

I still have to pack my bag and make sure I have all the things ready that I need to take with me to the hospital. My friend who is driving me will bring my purse , suitcase, laptop and cell phone tomorrow.

I get one sip of water this morning with a few meds and then totally n.p.o. Surgery is scheduled in about 8.5 hours. I was thinking of getting on the recumbent bike but I think I would get super thirsty if I did that. Perhaps if I get packed quickly (after sparking) I will take a slow walk around the block (about half mile).

Probably will spark to kill time until 11:15 when my friend is coming to pick me up after I am sure I have done all my errands and have my bag packed. emoticon

emoticon

I think I have taken care of everything now...and am waiting for my friend to pick me up. She is supposed to come in about an hour. I am going to walk around the block unless it starts raining again. I think I lost my cell phone twice this morning and had to call the surgeon's office to verify my next appointment as I have lost the info packet they sent me.

My dental cleaning and exam yesterday went well. (Otherwise if there was an abscess or any infection the knee surgery would have to be postponed.)....
