I thought I remembered, but I didn't

Saturday, May 22, 2010

It hurts a lot more than I remembered. I think I progressed faster last time...I don't remember it hurting this much..stiff upper lip.....I know I will get better soon....gotta work hard at rehab...

Last night I didn't sleep more than an hour all night due to alarms going off.... Hope tonight goes better...

Yeah, hospitals are no place to sleep. Nurses have to keep checking in on you plus the noises and alarms going off. I hope it gets better for you. Hope you are getting enough pain meds. My knee did not hurt for the first few days. Then the block wore off and oh-my-gosh.
I am glad you came through alright and hope you have a speedy recovery--I continue to pray for you-you have come such a long way.

Yes, a hospital is no place to try and get peace and quiet it seems. The nights are the worst. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Today's the day...knee replacement....

Friday, May 21, 2010

I am thirsty already and it is only 6:00 a.m. and wishing I could have coffee, too.

I still have to pack my bag and make sure I have all the things ready that I need to take with me to the hospital. My friend who is driving me will bring my purse , suitcase, laptop and cell phone tomorrow.

I get one sip of water this morning with a few meds and then totally n.p.o. Surgery is scheduled in about 8.5 hours. I was thinking of getting on the recumbent bike but I think I would get super thirsty if I did that. Perhaps if I get packed quickly (after sparking) I will take a slow walk around the block (about half mile).

Probably will spark to kill time until 11:15 when my friend is coming to pick me up after I am sure I have done all my errands and have my bag packed. emoticon

I think I have taken care of everything now...and am waiting for my friend to pick me up. She is supposed to come in about an hour. I am going to walk around the block unless it starts raining again. I think I lost my cell phone twice this morning and had to call the surgeon's office to verify my next appointment as I have lost the info packet they sent me.

My dental cleaning and exam yesterday went well. (Otherwise if there was an abscess or any infection the knee surgery would have to be postponed.)....

Good luck. You will be glad you did this. At least I was, from constant pain to physical therapy pain to no pain. Awesome.

slept in until 5:30 a.m., tomorrow hopefully until 9:00 a.m.

Changing my sleep schedule. Last time had the other knee done was always up at my usual 4 to 5:00 a.m. walking the halls and trying to find COFFEEEEE... If I change my sleep schedule it should help with that problem, I hope. I also might have a roommate who won't tolerate my getting up so early.

Tomorrow morning I won't get the cuppa joe so I want to sleep as late as possible. I will stay up until midnight tonight to see if that helps.

Today I have a rototilling man coming over. The garden will be planted into grass this year except for one corner where a dozen tomato plants will be planted. With two knee replacements I definitely will not be able to garden. Dr. said I should not kneel or might have to get a re-operation. I know if I got down on the ground it would be hard to get up without going on my knees. Doc said I need to strengthen my quads...easy for him to say after he cuts them. I plan to work extra hard on therapy so I can drive soon. The pain was the main drawback last time as I couldn't drive until I was off the pain meds (during the day).

I also have someone coming over to scrub my kitchen and bathroom since my daughter has moved to Montana (1000 miles away).

I have a last minute dental cleaning this afternoon and when I get home will still have a few last minute bills to take care of.

Packing should be fun....hope I find everything I need to put in my suitcase.....

Last day at work before LOA

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

NOW I am getting excited. I can go swimming one more time before my leave at the therapy pool. I really need to do this as yesterday I did not clock any exercise time and my legs are aching. I am up early enough to have a short spin on the recumbent bike before work and I do plan to do that so my legs will feel better. But I have to have my coffee first!!!! Will definitely miss my coffee on Friday morning before surgery. I always get caffeine withdrawal headaches when I don't get my coffee by 6:00 a.m. One time I was in the hospital and had the cafeeine withdrawal headache and it was too early for the nurses to hunt down some coffee so they put morphine in my IV....that worked.... (this was a 1 time only experiment and I did not instigate this....really)...

I quit coffee two years ago and haven't missed it at all. Tea is a different story. I still enjoy a cup now and then. Water is where it's at for me. I guess I was never addicted to the caffeine. Good luck with your surgery.

A great day...

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

I am getting the last minute things done. Found I need to be n.p.o. from midnight even though my surgery isn't until 2:45 in the afternoon. I suppose they will put in an iv so I don't dehydrate too much. That's a long time without food or water, but I'm sure I will survive. I usually get up at 4 or 5 in the morning and I will try to sleep in. Perhaps stay up until midnight to get that last snack and beverage in and then won't set alarm. I have to admit I am getting a bit nervous about the surgery, but that is only normal. I remember I was well taken care of last time and even though it is a different hospital, I do have the same surgeon and he did an excellent job and made sure all my items needed (support hose, prescriptions, etc) were supplied. I certainly don't look forward to the first couple of walks after surgery nor the PT. As I recall I usually worked up a sweat trying to bend my knee and was reminded to breathe, breathe, breathe..... I think we hold our breath when we are having difficulty.

My mantra for today and the next week: BREATHE IN THROUGH THE NOSE, OUT THROUGH THE MOUTH..... ETC. emoticon
