2 days without Lasix; 2 days without allergic skin reaction....

Monday, May 17, 2010

I feel relieved to know why I had burning arms that sent me with a panic attack to the ER. I also had 4 more days of suddenly having my arms, face, neck and who knows what else turn red and itchy. Definitely am calling internist today to get a different diuretic as I most probably am allergic to Lasix. If I don't get a replacement diuretic before Friday (day of knee replacement surgery) I will let the nurses at the hospital know and I will refuse to take Lasix. I plan to register either today or tomorrow at the hospital and will mention this allergy when I do that.

I still have some important business to take care of before my surgery regarding my auto and home insurance and have to fax some items to the insurance company to save a bit on that. Otherwise, I think things are shaping up with my to-do list.

Have a friend coming over to help with some last minute house cleaning before I go away for 2 weeks.

This morning I stripped my bed and started a load of wash at 4:30. Like they say, "There's no rest for the wicked." (Just like to know what I did in a former life that was so wicked.)

I am up that early, but also can't run the washer due to DH. Our bedroom shares a wall with the laundry room - the same wall our bed is up against. So I usually Spark instead...

It is better to keep busy then to sit and fret over everything--I am the same way. My house is cleanest when I stress (b etter then grazing). emoticon

You are getting your house in order and trying to plan ahead. Starting early in the day doesn't mean you are wicked, just acutely aware of a shrinking time frame to get it all done. I'd be the same way, except DH would be unhappy having the washing machine going at that time of the morning. Have a great day and see about a new diuretic.

Slept well last night..good weigh-in this a.m.

Sunday, May 16, 2010

Lost 2.6 lb since yesterday morning. I think the gain was partly due to discontinuing diuretic but also watched sodium intake. Feeling rested this a.m. and so will get busy doing some laundry and packing for my hospital and rehab stay. I probably will be away from home 2 weeks. Will have to pack plenty of clean clothes and be sure I have at least 3 pairs of reading glasses. Have to bring my favorite down pillow cause those foam ones just don't curl up right for my neck. I might not have access to my computer the first couple of days so won't be able to check in with spark people right away but as soon as I am able to do it I will be back here...sparking away...

I'll keep the positive thoughts going for you. May your surgery go well, your spirit find peace, and your new knee be just what you need and want!!!

Aren't we fortunate that we can get new parts when our old ones wear out?
Looking forward to hearing that you're up and getting ready to dance a jig.

Not taking Lasix....no rashes today....

Saturday, May 15, 2010

I plan on skipping the Lasix dose again tomorrow and seeing if I have no rash again. It was nice that I didn't have to take Benadryl to get rid of the hot red rash all over my arms, face and neck like I did three times this week at work.

I think this experiment is turning out well and will be calling my internist to report allergic reaction to the Lasix. There were 5 days out of the last approximately 2 weeks where this flushing, itching and uncomfortable feeling occurred and was severe enough that I had to take Benadryl so I would stop itching. I had blamed it on the pollen in the air and in the flowers I had brought to work. I thought it was really strange that I had suddenly become so sensitive to the pollens in flowers. In the past I had only had an anaphylactic response to ingesting bee pollen in a protein drink and in an herbal tea.

Possible Lasix (diuretic) allergy....

Saturday, May 15, 2010

I had my ambulance ride to the ER last week on Monday...because of burning in my arm then both arms....then 3 times since then I have had my arms turn red and face, neck, etc. with itching. I treated myself the last 3 times with Benadryl and have figured out this is an allergic reaction to something. My friend at work quizzed me about how long I have been having allergic reactions like this and it seems to coincide with starting Lasix as a diuretic. It is very possible I am allergic to Lasix. Apparently this is a common allergic reaction to Lasix and people who are allergic to sulfa drugs (I was not aware of being allergic to sulfa drugs, but it is a common allergy) are usually allergic to Lasix. I am going to quit using the Lasix this weekend and if the symptoms don't return I plan to call my internist to get a different diuretic before I go into the hospital for my knee replacement. That will be a lot easier than trying to refuse Lasix at the hospital and rehab center. I also don't like using Benadryl that much as it has a side effect of making me sleepy.

Hopefully I can get a replacement diuretic that I don't react to this way.

This morning I am going for the last water aerobics class for awhile and I plan to spend at least a half hour in the whirlpool afterwards.

Then I am going home to work on getting ready for my surgery. Hope everybody has a great weekend.

Thanks everybody for your comments re Lasix allergy....gee whizikers...I am also allergic to bee pollen and possibly bee stings and carry an Epipen in case of that problem.

No one even mentioned an allergy when I was in t he ER....they just ruled out heart problems and possible stroke. Sometimes I think doctors miss the obvious and are looking for big problems instead. emoticon

There are LOTS of diuretics out there. I am sure they can find something else that will work for you.

I came here just to tell you that lasix is cross sensitive with sulfa drugs! But, seems like you already know that! There are other diuretics out there, your doctor can try another. Good luck!

One week to knee replacement....

Friday, May 14, 2010

A week from now I will be NPO from midnight. Surgery is not until 2:00 p.m. and the instructions from the hospital say I don't have to be n.p.o. quite that long. I will double check with my doctor's office just in case they don't agree. A friend is dropping me off at the hospital and I will leave my personal items with security. I hope things go smoothly. I did a "test run" at the hospital last week when I had my lower extremity ultrasounds. The hospital is more of a maze than the one where I had my other knee done. I got lost going back to my car and got a lot of exercise going back and forth in some hallways and finally found a medical student who helped me.

I have discontinued the 5,000 mg of fish oil I usually take. Otherwise I am still on all my vitamins and prescriptions. I have to remember to have Benadryl available at the hospital and nursing facility (rehab) because the spring pollen seems to be peaking out and yesterday at work my arms face and neck turned bright red in the afternoon and I was so glad I had Benadryl in my desk after my last allergic reaction to the daffodils. The only problem is I got really tired after the Benadryl and ended up not going to the gym as I was afraid I might fall asleep in the whirlpool.....

I went to bed so early last night that I woke up and started coffee and sparking at 3:00 a.m. I am thinking of going to the 24-hour gym before work this morning. A nice dip in the pool would be refreshing and the whirlpool at that place has a waterfall I can sit under to really massage my neck and back. Yep...that's the ticket.... emoticon

You'll do great, I'm sure. I'm a tad jealous, I need that but can't get it done.
AS a nurse, I know that you only have to be npo for the 8 hours preceeding a procedure. The doctor's office probably won't tell you that. It just needs time to empty from your stomach, otherwise you could vomit and strangle on the vomit.
I want to go to work with you and sit under that waterfall!
Best wishes to you.

Good luck on your knee replacement. I hope that everything goes well and you are up and at it quickly. I would love to find a place that has a waterfall that I could sit under and get a massage on my neck.

Take care
