Not taking Lasix....no rashes today....

Saturday, May 15, 2010

I plan on skipping the Lasix dose again tomorrow and seeing if I have no rash again. It was nice that I didn't have to take Benadryl to get rid of the hot red rash all over my arms, face and neck like I did three times this week at work.

I think this experiment is turning out well and will be calling my internist to report allergic reaction to the Lasix. There were 5 days out of the last approximately 2 weeks where this flushing, itching and uncomfortable feeling occurred and was severe enough that I had to take Benadryl so I would stop itching. I had blamed it on the pollen in the air and in the flowers I had brought to work. I thought it was really strange that I had suddenly become so sensitive to the pollens in flowers. In the past I had only had an anaphylactic response to ingesting bee pollen in a protein drink and in an herbal tea.

Possible Lasix (diuretic) allergy....

Saturday, May 15, 2010

I had my ambulance ride to the ER last week on Monday...because of burning in my arm then both arms....then 3 times since then I have had my arms turn red and face, neck, etc. with itching. I treated myself the last 3 times with Benadryl and have figured out this is an allergic reaction to something. My friend at work quizzed me about how long I have been having allergic reactions like this and it seems to coincide with starting Lasix as a diuretic. It is very possible I am allergic to Lasix. Apparently this is a common allergic reaction to Lasix and people who are allergic to sulfa drugs (I was not aware of being allergic to sulfa drugs, but it is a common allergy) are usually allergic to Lasix. I am going to quit using the Lasix this weekend and if the symptoms don't return I plan to call my internist to get a different diuretic before I go into the hospital for my knee replacement. That will be a lot easier than trying to refuse Lasix at the hospital and rehab center. I also don't like using Benadryl that much as it has a side effect of making me sleepy.

Hopefully I can get a replacement diuretic that I don't react to this way.

This morning I am going for the last water aerobics class for awhile and I plan to spend at least a half hour in the whirlpool afterwards.

Then I am going home to work on getting ready for my surgery. Hope everybody has a great weekend.

Thanks everybody for your comments re Lasix allergy....gee whizikers...I am also allergic to bee pollen and possibly bee stings and carry an Epipen in case of that problem.

No one even mentioned an allergy when I was in t he ER....they just ruled out heart problems and possible stroke. Sometimes I think doctors miss the obvious and are looking for big problems instead. emoticon

There are LOTS of diuretics out there. I am sure they can find something else that will work for you.

I came here just to tell you that lasix is cross sensitive with sulfa drugs! But, seems like you already know that! There are other diuretics out there, your doctor can try another. Good luck!

One week to knee replacement....

Friday, May 14, 2010

A week from now I will be NPO from midnight. Surgery is not until 2:00 p.m. and the instructions from the hospital say I don't have to be n.p.o. quite that long. I will double check with my doctor's office just in case they don't agree. A friend is dropping me off at the hospital and I will leave my personal items with security. I hope things go smoothly. I did a "test run" at the hospital last week when I had my lower extremity ultrasounds. The hospital is more of a maze than the one where I had my other knee done. I got lost going back to my car and got a lot of exercise going back and forth in some hallways and finally found a medical student who helped me.

I have discontinued the 5,000 mg of fish oil I usually take. Otherwise I am still on all my vitamins and prescriptions. I have to remember to have Benadryl available at the hospital and nursing facility (rehab) because the spring pollen seems to be peaking out and yesterday at work my arms face and neck turned bright red in the afternoon and I was so glad I had Benadryl in my desk after my last allergic reaction to the daffodils. The only problem is I got really tired after the Benadryl and ended up not going to the gym as I was afraid I might fall asleep in the whirlpool.....

I went to bed so early last night that I woke up and started coffee and sparking at 3:00 a.m. I am thinking of going to the 24-hour gym before work this morning. A nice dip in the pool would be refreshing and the whirlpool at that place has a waterfall I can sit under to really massage my neck and back. Yep...that's the ticket.... emoticon

You'll do great, I'm sure. I'm a tad jealous, I need that but can't get it done.
AS a nurse, I know that you only have to be npo for the 8 hours preceeding a procedure. The doctor's office probably won't tell you that. It just needs time to empty from your stomach, otherwise you could vomit and strangle on the vomit.
I want to go to work with you and sit under that waterfall!
Best wishes to you.

Good luck on your knee replacement. I hope that everything goes well and you are up and at it quickly. I would love to find a place that has a waterfall that I could sit under and get a massage on my neck.

Take care

Knee replacement in 8 days. Whoo-hoo!!!

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Getting nervouser but trying to remember that to-do list. Got an Rx written by my internist for the gym membership hold but it was not written correctly. I will have the orthoopedist's office do that instead. Have to talk to them also about the Baker's cyst found on the operative knee. Also am having foot pain from my accessory navicular (of, course on the to-be-operated side. Gee whiz....

Talked to HR yesterday and they could not or would not tell me if I will be covered by FMLA rules afterwards but got a verbal assurance from the director of our department that I will still have a job when I get back.
