Monday and back to work...elevate legs, exercise, watch sodium....

Monday, April 19, 2010

There is a lot to think about. I probably have venous insufficiency in my legs and swelling is not going away. I have just started Lasix a few days ago and I do not see much improvement. I know the sodium can cause a problem with the blood pressure and the fluid retention and so I am watching that so closely. I do best on 1,200 or less mg of sodium a day which means no prepackaged foods and lots of fresh veggies, fruits and home cooked items. No restaurant foods AT ALL, so need to pack my foods for lunch so I won't be tempted to buy something "downstairs in the Global Market."

I was off work 2 days and now I have to explain to my supervisor what is going on.... I have a circulation problem in my legs and it hurts to hang my legs down at the desk all day long. I will have to get up and walk around a minimum of 5 minutes every hour. I was told by my doctor to elevate my legs when sitting at the desk. I have to wear TED stockings to help the circulation which so far haven't done much.

I have to start work a half hour early today so I can go to PT for my hand this afternoon. The timing will be perfect for going to the therapy pool at 5:00 to 6:00 and I always feel so good when in the pool and even the next day. It really helps my joints loosen up and that will be good.

Keep on movin' and follow doctor's orders. Hope everybody has a great week~~~ emoticon emoticon emoticon

I know how hard it is to keep your legs elevated at work. It sounds like you have a good plan to get up and exercise for 5 minutes an hour. I found the stockings very helpful, but I don't have to wear them now that I've lost 40 pounds. You can get there, too.

Hope the Lasix help and does not cause other problems. I think the suggestion from MARPET44 is good, exercise seems to be beneficial for many things.

Good luck. emoticon

While sitting st your desks practice lifting your legs so you are exercising them. Swimming does good for you and so see if you could do more. Have you tried wearing your TEDS at night. Relax!

You can also do foot exercises -- write the alphabet with your big toe in the air. This will help you to move your muscles in the lower leg and help circulation.

I felt skinny at 180...

Sunday, April 18, 2010

Though overweight according to the BMI for my height is 179, I felt actually skinny when I was 180 and was wearing size 14s. Now I have regained over 50 lbs of my original 100 lb weight loss and am wearing size 18 again. I was on a plateau for almost a year and then gradually started eating too much and not exercising enough. It isn't too hard to figure out. I am sure there has been a lot of emotional eating and I noticed a correlation between getting too tired, too hungry or too upset and a strong craving for ice cream (apparently my favorite " comfort food.").

I look enviously at my pictures of myself from 3 years ago and want to be there again, but apparently I haven't wanted it enough to eat sensibly and exercise enough to get there.

With my lower extremity edema problem causing difficulty walking, I know I have to re-dedicate myself to improving my health. I don't want to be dragging myself around like I did 5 years ago, using a riding scooter or walker. I also don't want to be wearing size 24 or larger clothes.

Today is the beginning of believing in myself and regaining my health. emoticon emoticon emoticon

You can do it. The swelling in my leg is what convinced me to finally lose weight. Now I've lost more than 40 pounds I feel so much better and my leg is better, too. If I can do it, I know you can, too.

Oh, yeah. It is just plain tough. But you can do it! Have you considered getting a trainer to help you for one or two sessions? My girlfriends have done that and swear by it. It might help you focus in on exercises that can really help you with your special concerns. As for ice cream during stressful times, I think we can all relate! I have a different comfort food, but the pull is the same. And the pathetic thing is that many times I will continue to feed myself when I'm not even hungry and not even enjoying it! Let's stop that, okay? I will if you will... emoticon

hi Teddy. i have some things in common with you. i also was addicted to ice cream. i ate it every night before bed (my fav treat.)try substituting low fat yogart. that's what's working for me-i don't miss it! you can even freeze it if you want. i also struggle with the edema, but i recently read an article about helping get rid of it. they said to exercise the affected body part, (in my case feet/legs are the worst), and it helps the fluid to circulate so you can get rid of it. also drinking more water. that's what i keep in mind every time i go for a walk. you can do it!!!just start small and build for there. you'll get there. emoticon

It seems that when you are on a plateau, sooner or later, you just give up! You are back and ready to go again and that is a good sign. I am working hard to break a plateau, myself, at this time. I found myself going into that upward spiral (gaining) and wondering just why I was working so hard, with no results. I decided to renew my efforts and after a week am back to my low weight and am looking forward to going on down from here. I don't have far to go in numbers but it is the hardest and most stubborn 20 pounds. I am determined to beat it!!!!

Regained the 4 lb I lost yesterday!!!!

Saturday, April 17, 2010

I know: "It's just water." However, I was hoping for my weight chart to show a steady decline. Today I am incorporating more exercise since I am feeling better than yesterday and day before. Am leaving the house in 20 minutes for water aerobics. In the pool for a whole hour and getting heart rate up in water aerobics class. Afterwards I swim 10 laps and then go in the whirlpool for 20 minutes.

Trying to do "all the right things" to get the swelling in legs down. Exercise, low sodium intake, elevate legs, take prescriptions as ordered. Hope I am not forgetting anything. And drink minimum of 8 cups of water. emoticon

And buy some knee support hose...doctor said it was not necessary to buy the extra tight ones nor the long ones (they are hard to fit and get on)..... emoticon

I have had the leg swelling problem and it sounds like you are doing all the right things. The support hose are indeed tough to get on. My DH actually wraps my legs for me to help keep the swelling down but I have had this problem for a long time.

lost 4 lb overnight...need to lose 5 lb more of water weight

Friday, April 16, 2010

Got a good night's sleep. Plan to elevate bottom of bed to help with water logged legs. I also am going to keep after increasing my exercise as I am able. Starting with recumbent bike 10 to 15 minutes at a time. I hope to start with 2 times a day and increase as tolerated.

I stayed home from work yesterday and today as dangling my legs while sitting at my desk has been very painful and doctor said I need to find a way to get at least one leg up at a time while working. I have a box with a pillow from when I came back to work after knee replacement and will just have to try that when I go back to work on Monday. I also need to get up a minimum of once an hour and walk around 3-5 minutes to keep the blood from pooling in the legs.

When I was 21 to 23 when I was a teacher I recall having horrible pains in my legs from standing all day and I would go home and elevate my legs above my heart and that felt great...so I guess this is something that has just gotten worse as I have gotten older (and heavier). I know losing weight and eating a super low sodium diet will help.

Hope everybody has a great weekend. I plan to go to the gym and do exercises in the water. If I am up to it I will take a 1 mile walk around the neighborhood. It looks like we are going to have some great weather. emoticon

Just got off recumbent bike and did it for 20 minutes.... feel loosened up....

You're on the right track now. I'm sure elevating the end of the bed will help, as will keeping your legs up at work as much as possible. It's always good to listen to your doctor. Hang in there.

Dr. put me on Lasix to reduce swelling in legs...

Thursday, April 15, 2010

I guess I probably have venous insufficiency in my legs. Dr. said since both legs are equally swollen I don't need to worry about a thrombosis. I have always had rather poor circulation in my legs and sitting at a desk all day with my legs hanging down is aggravating the lack of circulation. I need to be super vigilant abouts sodium intake, drink plenty of water and be sure to eat a banana or other source of potassium while on the high dose diuretic. I got 100 pills of prescription for less than $4.00. I need to be sure to get plenty of potassium as I work with someone who said a neighbor of hers (a fairly young woman) was put on a diuretic and her potassium got too low and she died of a heart attack in the shower (she did not have heart disease). So, of course, my friend at work said to make sure the doctor watches my potassium level.

I have the nutrition data from Spark People and noticed that my potassium intake has been very good. I seem to get a lot of potassium from some of my favorite foods. Isn't SparkPeople great?

P.S. The doctor suggested regular support hose or even knee highs would help since I have trouble getting the graduated TED stockings on because of my hand issues (arthritis, carpal tunnel, trigger thumb, thumb joint replacements, etc.).

I had the same swelling problem last year, only in just one leg. I had to wear the knee high Jobst stockings and elevate the foot of my bed on blocks. I found the stockings really pretty comfortable and the elevated end of the bed didn't bother me, either. I did have some trouble getting the stockings on, though. The doctor said I had to wear them every day until I lost 50 pounds. Well, I've lost 40 pounds and the swelling is gone. I still haven't lowered the end of the bed, mainly because the bed is so heavy to move. Good luck to you with your health problems. Losing weight will help in the long run. I am proof of that.
