Up and down...down and up... very discouraging. Yesterday for some reason my legs were swollen and hurt most in the morning and by afternoon they were much better. Perhaps keeping the legs elevated for about 2-3 hours in the morning helped. It is very awkward to elevate the legs while working at a computer. I asked my supervisor for an ergonomic evaluation but the company will not order that until I have a doctor's letter telling what my medical condition is and her recommendations (elevate legs while seated). I also have called my doctor's office to ask for some testing of the veins because I am concerned about the feet and legs feeling cold and numb. This has never happened before, though I have had chronic low grade swelling for years. If she does not send me to someone I can refer myself because of my insurance. Hopefully, something can be done about this problem.
There is a lot to think about. I probably have venous insufficiency in my legs and swelling is not going away. I have just started Lasix a few days ago and I do not see much improvement. I know the sodium can cause a problem with the blood pressure and the fluid retention and so I am watching that so closely. I do best on 1,200 or less mg of sodium a day which means no prepackaged foods and lots of fresh veggies, fruits and home cooked items. No restaurant foods AT ALL, so need to pack my foods for lunch so I won't be tempted to buy something "downstairs in the Global Market."
I was off work 2 days and now I have to explain to my supervisor what is going on.... I have a circulation problem in my legs and it hurts to hang my legs down at the desk all day long. I will have to get up and walk around a minimum of 5 minutes every hour. I was told by my doctor to elevate my legs when sitting at the desk. I have to wear TED stockings to help the circulation which so far haven't done much.
I have to start work a half hour early today so I can go to PT for my hand this afternoon. The timing will be perfect for going to the therapy pool at 5:00 to 6:00 and I always feel so good when in the pool and even the next day. It really helps my joints loosen up and that will be good.
Keep on movin' and follow doctor's orders. Hope everybody has a great week~~~
Though overweight according to the BMI for my height is 179, I felt actually skinny when I was 180 and was wearing size 14s. Now I have regained over 50 lbs of my original 100 lb weight loss and am wearing size 18 again. I was on a plateau for almost a year and then gradually started eating too much and not exercising enough. It isn't too hard to figure out. I am sure there has been a lot of emotional eating and I noticed a correlation between getting too tired, too hungry or too upset and a strong craving for ice cream (apparently my favorite " comfort food.").
I look enviously at my pictures of myself from 3 years ago and want to be there again, but apparently I haven't wanted it enough to eat sensibly and exercise enough to get there.
With my lower extremity edema problem causing difficulty walking, I know I have to re-dedicate myself to improving my health. I don't want to be dragging myself around like I did 5 years ago, using a riding scooter or walker. I also don't want to be wearing size 24 or larger clothes.
Today is the beginning of believing in myself and regaining my health.
I know: "It's just water." However, I was hoping for my weight chart to show a steady decline. Today I am incorporating more exercise since I am feeling better than yesterday and day before. Am leaving the house in 20 minutes for water aerobics. In the pool for a whole hour and getting heart rate up in water aerobics class. Afterwards I swim 10 laps and then go in the whirlpool for 20 minutes.
Trying to do "all the right things" to get the swelling in legs down. Exercise, low sodium intake, elevate legs, take prescriptions as ordered. Hope I am not forgetting anything. And drink minimum of 8 cups of water.
And buy some knee support hose...doctor said it was not necessary to buy the extra tight ones nor the long ones (they are hard to fit and get on).....
Got a good night's sleep. Plan to elevate bottom of bed to help with water logged legs. I also am going to keep after increasing my exercise as I am able. Starting with recumbent bike 10 to 15 minutes at a time. I hope to start with 2 times a day and increase as tolerated.
I stayed home from work yesterday and today as dangling my legs while sitting at my desk has been very painful and doctor said I need to find a way to get at least one leg up at a time while working. I have a box with a pillow from when I came back to work after knee replacement and will just have to try that when I go back to work on Monday. I also need to get up a minimum of once an hour and walk around 3-5 minutes to keep the blood from pooling in the legs.
When I was 21 to 23 when I was a teacher I recall having horrible pains in my legs from standing all day and I would go home and elevate my legs above my heart and that felt great...so I guess this is something that has just gotten worse as I have gotten older (and heavier). I know losing weight and eating a super low sodium diet will help.
Hope everybody has a great weekend. I plan to go to the gym and do exercises in the water. If I am up to it I will take a 1 mile walk around the neighborhood. It looks like we are going to have some great weather.
Just got off recumbent bike and did it for 20 minutes.... feel loosened up....
