Regained the 4 lb I lost yesterday!!!!

Saturday, April 17, 2010

I know: "It's just water." However, I was hoping for my weight chart to show a steady decline. Today I am incorporating more exercise since I am feeling better than yesterday and day before. Am leaving the house in 20 minutes for water aerobics. In the pool for a whole hour and getting heart rate up in water aerobics class. Afterwards I swim 10 laps and then go in the whirlpool for 20 minutes.

Trying to do "all the right things" to get the swelling in legs down. Exercise, low sodium intake, elevate legs, take prescriptions as ordered. Hope I am not forgetting anything. And drink minimum of 8 cups of water. emoticon

And buy some knee support hose...doctor said it was not necessary to buy the extra tight ones nor the long ones (they are hard to fit and get on)..... emoticon

ted hose(the extra tight ones) really suck. I had to wear them for 2 years after i had a blood clot in my leg. ugh. Glad you don't have to wear them.

I have had the leg swelling problem and it sounds like you are doing all the right things. The support hose are indeed tough to get on. My DH actually wraps my legs for me to help keep the swelling down but I have had this problem for a long time.

lost 4 lb overnight...need to lose 5 lb more of water weight

Friday, April 16, 2010

Got a good night's sleep. Plan to elevate bottom of bed to help with water logged legs. I also am going to keep after increasing my exercise as I am able. Starting with recumbent bike 10 to 15 minutes at a time. I hope to start with 2 times a day and increase as tolerated.

I stayed home from work yesterday and today as dangling my legs while sitting at my desk has been very painful and doctor said I need to find a way to get at least one leg up at a time while working. I have a box with a pillow from when I came back to work after knee replacement and will just have to try that when I go back to work on Monday. I also need to get up a minimum of once an hour and walk around 3-5 minutes to keep the blood from pooling in the legs.

When I was 21 to 23 when I was a teacher I recall having horrible pains in my legs from standing all day and I would go home and elevate my legs above my heart and that felt great...so I guess this is something that has just gotten worse as I have gotten older (and heavier). I know losing weight and eating a super low sodium diet will help.

Hope everybody has a great weekend. I plan to go to the gym and do exercises in the water. If I am up to it I will take a 1 mile walk around the neighborhood. It looks like we are going to have some great weather. emoticon

Just got off recumbent bike and did it for 20 minutes.... feel loosened up....

Doctor gave you some good advice. Sitting down for long periods of time isn't good for anyone.
Have a good weekend and hope all goes well next week! emoticon

You're on the right track now. I'm sure elevating the end of the bed will help, as will keeping your legs up at work as much as possible. It's always good to listen to your doctor. Hang in there.

Dr. put me on Lasix to reduce swelling in legs...

Thursday, April 15, 2010

I guess I probably have venous insufficiency in my legs. Dr. said since both legs are equally swollen I don't need to worry about a thrombosis. I have always had rather poor circulation in my legs and sitting at a desk all day with my legs hanging down is aggravating the lack of circulation. I need to be super vigilant abouts sodium intake, drink plenty of water and be sure to eat a banana or other source of potassium while on the high dose diuretic. I got 100 pills of prescription for less than $4.00. I need to be sure to get plenty of potassium as I work with someone who said a neighbor of hers (a fairly young woman) was put on a diuretic and her potassium got too low and she died of a heart attack in the shower (she did not have heart disease). So, of course, my friend at work said to make sure the doctor watches my potassium level.

I have the nutrition data from Spark People and noticed that my potassium intake has been very good. I seem to get a lot of potassium from some of my favorite foods. Isn't SparkPeople great?
emoticon

P.S. The doctor suggested regular support hose or even knee highs would help since I have trouble getting the graduated TED stockings on because of my hand issues (arthritis, carpal tunnel, trigger thumb, thumb joint replacements, etc.).

Dr put my brother on Lasix for a heart issue and he lost almost 50 pounds of weight, mostly fluid, in less than a month.

I sure hope you feel better soon. My mom had to take a Lasix pill daily and they also told her to make sure she ate 1/2 banana daily. I hope this will do the trick and the pain in your legs will be relieved...

Wow, bananas I was not aware a diuretic could cause low potassium. Good information. Well I hope this does the trick and definitely keep an eye on the potassium. Take care and I hope you are feeling better soon! Have a great day! emoticon emoticon

I had the same swelling problem last year, only in just one leg. I had to wear the knee high Jobst stockings and elevate the foot of my bed on blocks. I found the stockings really pretty comfortable and the elevated end of the bed didn't bother me, either. I did have some trouble getting the stockings on, though. The doctor said I had to wear them every day until I lost 50 pounds. Well, I've lost 40 pounds and the swelling is gone. I still haven't lowered the end of the bed, mainly because the bed is so heavy to move. Good luck to you with your health problems. Losing weight will help in the long run. I am proof of that.

Swelling in legs and feet...is driving me coo-coo....

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Yesterday at work I had to take off my anklets as they were digging into my swollen feet and ankles and I had a design where the ribbing was...unbelievable. So I bought some large men's sock that only cover the foot and that seemed to help some until about noon and then I had to take off my shoes. I have tried support hose of many kinds including compression stockings and have a terrible time getting a proper fit. One time the doctor wrote a prescription for a pair and they fit very nicely until the swelling in my legs went down and then they were baggy and useless. They cost $50 and the doctor said I had to buy another pair...(really?) Anyhow every time I have had a pair that fits and they wear out I cannot find the exact ones again and have spent hundreds of dollars over the past 5 years or more getting stockings that just don't work out. The added problem is they are so hard to put on with my arthritic hands that have had 3 surgeries and 1 more in the future. If anyone has a suggestion for me aside from sitting with my legs up in the air all day, please let me know. emoticon

I used to suffer from swollen feet and ankles but the problems went away when I reduced my sodium intake, quit drinking, and exercised on a regular basis. Then, I had a 6 hour plane trip. The swelling began and progressively got worse. I know I did consume more sodium, had a few drinks (my daughter's wedding), didn't consume as much water (probably averaged about 6 glasses a day), but I did exercise every day but one. I got home and the skin on my ankles and feet were so tight. For 2 days now, I've been great at following low sodium, 12 glasses of water, and exercising but they're still swollen although not as bad. If you find something to help this, please let me know - I'm very frustrated with this - yeah & going coo coo!

I understand how you feel. Have you tried diabetic socks. They are not compression, but also do not bind. I always use them when my ankles are swollen. I also do a bit of very, very light massage on my legs. You start at the foot, and with a very light, almost feathery touch, draw your fingers all the way up your legs towards the groin area. You are actually working the fluid up to the lympn nodes so they can absorb some of it. On a bad day, or when I have to fly, I always do this in the evening for about 10 or 15 minutes. If you get a chance, you can also do it during the day. (But find someplace private!) Good Luck!

I sympathize with you. I have the luxury of being able to take a nap now and then to get off my feet, but it's only now and then. Usually by dinner time I have elephant feet from the knees down. I've asked about water pills, but my doc says they are bad for my kidneys.

Good luck to you.

Angel and Puff are hiding from the thunder and lightning....

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

The thunder woke me up an hour before my alarm. We haven't had a rainstorm (or thunderstorm) for ages...since last fall? It seems weird. A winter with no snow in March and only .1 of an inch of snow in February in Minnesota. Makes me feel like "strange things are happening." Guess I have found a new source of anxiety!!!! emoticon

I love storms until they wake me up at 3AM :) Couldn't get back to sleep. My doggie hates thunder. He decided to climb into bed with us last night and pant, and pant, and pant, and pant. I'm a little slow today as the 3AM wake up call didn't have a snooze button. emoticon
