Dr. put me on Lasix to reduce swelling in legs...

Thursday, April 15, 2010

I guess I probably have venous insufficiency in my legs. Dr. said since both legs are equally swollen I don't need to worry about a thrombosis. I have always had rather poor circulation in my legs and sitting at a desk all day with my legs hanging down is aggravating the lack of circulation. I need to be super vigilant abouts sodium intake, drink plenty of water and be sure to eat a banana or other source of potassium while on the high dose diuretic. I got 100 pills of prescription for less than $4.00. I need to be sure to get plenty of potassium as I work with someone who said a neighbor of hers (a fairly young woman) was put on a diuretic and her potassium got too low and she died of a heart attack in the shower (she did not have heart disease). So, of course, my friend at work said to make sure the doctor watches my potassium level.

I have the nutrition data from Spark People and noticed that my potassium intake has been very good. I seem to get a lot of potassium from some of my favorite foods. Isn't SparkPeople great?

P.S. The doctor suggested regular support hose or even knee highs would help since I have trouble getting the graduated TED stockings on because of my hand issues (arthritis, carpal tunnel, trigger thumb, thumb joint replacements, etc.).

Dr put my brother on Lasix for a heart issue and he lost almost 50 pounds of weight, mostly fluid, in less than a month.

I sure hope you feel better soon. My mom had to take a Lasix pill daily and they also told her to make sure she ate 1/2 banana daily. I hope this will do the trick and the pain in your legs will be relieved...

Wow, bananas I was not aware a diuretic could cause low potassium. Good information. Well I hope this does the trick and definitely keep an eye on the potassium. Take care and I hope you are feeling better soon! Have a great day! emoticon emoticon

Hopefully this will take care of the issue. A fairly inexpensive prescription for a change!

I had the same swelling problem last year, only in just one leg. I had to wear the knee high Jobst stockings and elevate the foot of my bed on blocks. I found the stockings really pretty comfortable and the elevated end of the bed didn't bother me, either. I did have some trouble getting the stockings on, though. The doctor said I had to wear them every day until I lost 50 pounds. Well, I've lost 40 pounds and the swelling is gone. I still haven't lowered the end of the bed, mainly because the bed is so heavy to move. Good luck to you with your health problems. Losing weight will help in the long run. I am proof of that.

I may have to try bananas. I never really like them much, but I need to get my potassium up. I am having trouble hitting it every day.

Swelling in legs and feet...is driving me coo-coo....

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Yesterday at work I had to take off my anklets as they were digging into my swollen feet and ankles and I had a design where the ribbing was...unbelievable. So I bought some large men's sock that only cover the foot and that seemed to help some until about noon and then I had to take off my shoes. I have tried support hose of many kinds including compression stockings and have a terrible time getting a proper fit. One time the doctor wrote a prescription for a pair and they fit very nicely until the swelling in my legs went down and then they were baggy and useless. They cost $50 and the doctor said I had to buy another pair...(really?) Anyhow every time I have had a pair that fits and they wear out I cannot find the exact ones again and have spent hundreds of dollars over the past 5 years or more getting stockings that just don't work out. The added problem is they are so hard to put on with my arthritic hands that have had 3 surgeries and 1 more in the future. If anyone has a suggestion for me aside from sitting with my legs up in the air all day, please let me know. emoticon

I used to suffer from swollen feet and ankles but the problems went away when I reduced my sodium intake, quit drinking, and exercised on a regular basis. Then, I had a 6 hour plane trip. The swelling began and progressively got worse. I know I did consume more sodium, had a few drinks (my daughter's wedding), didn't consume as much water (probably averaged about 6 glasses a day), but I did exercise every day but one. I got home and the skin on my ankles and feet were so tight. For 2 days now, I've been great at following low sodium, 12 glasses of water, and exercising but they're still swollen although not as bad. If you find something to help this, please let me know - I'm very frustrated with this - yeah & going coo coo!

I understand how you feel. Have you tried diabetic socks. They are not compression, but also do not bind. I always use them when my ankles are swollen. I also do a bit of very, very light massage on my legs. You start at the foot, and with a very light, almost feathery touch, draw your fingers all the way up your legs towards the groin area. You are actually working the fluid up to the lympn nodes so they can absorb some of it. On a bad day, or when I have to fly, I always do this in the evening for about 10 or 15 minutes. If you get a chance, you can also do it during the day. (But find someplace private!) Good Luck!

I sympathize with you. I have the luxury of being able to take a nap now and then to get off my feet, but it's only now and then. Usually by dinner time I have elephant feet from the knees down. I've asked about water pills, but my doc says they are bad for my kidneys.

Good luck to you.

Oh I am sorry to hear of all your misery. Can you take water pills or something to help? I am not familiar, but my girlfriend has to do this now and then. Good luck and I hope you have a better day tomorrow! emoticon emoticon

Angel and Puff are hiding from the thunder and lightning....

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

The thunder woke me up an hour before my alarm. We haven't had a rainstorm (or thunderstorm) for ages...since last fall? It seems weird. A winter with no snow in March and only .1 of an inch of snow in February in Minnesota. Makes me feel like "strange things are happening." Guess I have found a new source of anxiety!!!! emoticon

My dog is afraid of storms, too. He will get under my desk and sit at my feet. I think it means spring too!

I love storms until they wake me up at 3AM :) Couldn't get back to sleep. My doggie hates thunder. He decided to climb into bed with us last night and pant, and pant, and pant, and pant. I'm a little slow today as the 3AM wake up call didn't have a snooze button. emoticon

Divine order... coincidences? I think not!!!

Sunday, April 11, 2010

I had an odd series of events with my cell phone and sunglass slip ons for my new driving glasses yesterday.

I could not find my cell phone and called and called and could not hear it ring. So I assumed I lost it when I was out and about and called all the places I went, gym, buying club, Target and Culvers (busted, bought a cone there yesterday).

So I went to the mall to reactivate my old phone (which I actually liked better than my newer phone) and they changed it over for free. Then my eyeglass store was just across the hallway from the phone store and I stopped in to find out how much it would cost to replace the magnetic clip ons I had for my new driving glasses and nearly fainted when they said $60. I said I guess I'll go home and save up my money. Thanks, anyhow. Then one of the guys in the store said, hey, we have an extra one in the drawer. He helped me fit it on my glasses and it was a close enough fit to use and said, "no charge." I felt so blessed to actually get 2 lost items replaced with no charge.

I have been stressed out lately (past year?) and been losing stuff. Need to get organized.

Anyhow, this morning I walked into my computer room and there is the lost phone lying behind my office chair. I think I will keep using my older red phone with the sparkle gems I added cause it is easier to find.

Hope I haven't bored you with my silly story of "divine order."
