Gotta go to the pools and move these knees!!!!

Sunday, March 28, 2010

Yesterday was a shopping day, groceries, church food program, out to lunch with a friend. By the time I got home I was pooped. I had plans to go to the gym but it was close to dinner time and had to have dinner with hubby who had been alone all day. Then I watched a bit of t.v. and fell asleep with the t.v. on.

All those grand intentions....

Today is a new day and I got all "slept out," getting up about 8:00 which is late for me. It is now 10:00 and I have had breakfast and sparked..and as soon as I am done with the sparking, I plan to go to the gym and use the recumbent bike there (I have one at home but have to find someone to put the bolts in, got it very reasonably, $40) and since it is so nice out today with the sun shining I am going to walk on the new walking path that was finished last fall right near my house. A round trip on it is about 3 miles. I think if my feet are still sore when I do that I will try it with my old walker as the cane hurts my hands too much. I have hand splints and have been having PT for the right one after surgery in late December (didnt start the PT until 2 weeks ago). Depending on how cold the regular pool is and how many people are there I will do pool exercises there or in the whirlpool. The knee exercises really help even if I am in the whirlpool because the warmth is so comforting and I usually can tolerate it about 30 minutes.

My husband is a little more upset than usual as tomorrow he is having a 3-4 hour neuropsychiatric test to see if they can determine whether his memory problems are generalized (possibly from high blood pressure and/or ministrokes) or if they are localized to areas that are similar to Alzheimer dementia (in which case they might try some Alz meds to slow down the progression of the disease). He keeps saying they are going to lock him up and throw away the key and he is very upset that he has to do this test. I have tried to explain it to him and it doesn't help as I think his reasoning abilities are affected. I just hope I can get him there and he cooperates. The appointment for the test was made back in December and if he doesn't go through with it I am sure we will still be charged for it. I am trying my best not to argue with him about it and I told him he should do the best on the test as he can and try not to worry about it. He needs a lot of reassurance and with the memory problems I tire of having to repeat the explanation over and over. Do you think the Lord is telling me I need to work on patience? or tolerance? or empathy? Yup... emoticon

We are leaving in 15 minutes. Will let youknow how the test went. I promised we could go to his favorite Chinese restaurant for lunch and that seemed to take his mind off the test a bit.

That whole "be thankful for your trials" thing is tough to be sure. But you take it one day at a time. Seems like you are handling it very well. Hope that you had a chance to get into that healing pool water today. I have an outdoor pool here in Texas. The water is almost warm enough to get into without having a heart attack. I'm going to have to get in there one day soon. (brrrrrrr) Have a great evening and I'll say a prayer for that man of yours. And one for your patience as well.

I hope your husband makes it to the test and they rule out Alzheimer's.
Sounds like you have plenty of patience. It is hard dealing with someone with memory issues. I finally just started agreeing with my mom and acting like I was hearing something for the first time even though it might be the 20th time.

Going to the food program at church

Saturday, March 27, 2010

I went partly for myself and also to bring a friend who doesn't drive. We had a nice Saturday starting with waiting our turn (we were #200 and #201) . This is a food program that charges $2 per bag of food donated by local grocery stores. We paid $2 per bag and we got 4 bags between us. That fee covers the transportation costs of getting the food to the church for distribution. There are no forms to fill out and no questions are asked. So we got some nice bread and vegetables, beautiful leaf lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, etc. They have volunteer young people to help us older people who can't manage getting back to our car wtih the wonderful groceries. Today I had a wrist brace and had to use my cane and so looked like I needed plenty of help (and I did). My friend lives on Social Security and lately the govt has reduced her payments by $230 a month because of a deliquent student loan from about 30 years ago (she is 70 now) so she really appreciates this monthly trip to the church for these almost free foods.

She was going to be alone on EAster and I invited her to go out for dinner with my hubby and me and she was very excited about that idea. I hope we have decent weather next Sunday. emoticon

It's encouraging to hear about a church program that has connected with business to meet the needs of the community. It sounds great. Thanks for modeling "good behavior" . Positive reinforcement. Have a great Sunday.

Stage fright returns...

Thursday, March 25, 2010

I had to give a short report at work yesterday and got pretty nervous. I was told it was very good and interesting but my tongue got tangled on some of my words but I managed to get through it.... not my favorite thing to do, however. emoticon

It can be intimidating to speak before a group. Sounds like you did well. Congrats!!! I used to have to speak before large groups of drs when I was working and finally found a comfort zone by just looking a bit over their heads and scanning the room as I talked. Now a days when my tongue gets tangled its with my dentures and that is really a problem. lol

Leaving soon, short blog

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Just a quick blog. Small breakfast was good yesterday, but had a pretty big one this morning (about 500 calories). I have to get back to carrying around a notebook to jot down what I am eating as I go and then transfer to computer. Going swimming after work to get out the kinks.

I understand about the need to post short blogs. There is nothing wrong with a big breakfast as you can balance out the calories over the rest of the day. That boost in the morning will keep you going strong for most of the day.
