Swam in therapy pool at 6:30 a.m. feel great

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

I managed to get myself out of the house by 6:00 a.m. to go to the therapy pool. I was in only about 20 minutes but feel so much looser and relaxed and less achey.

I plan to go 2 more times this week.

Now I have to go finish my breakfast.... Swimming always makes me hungry. emoticon

It's not easy to get up that early, but the payoff is worth it.
Three times a week sounds like a great goal.

What a great PA my knee surgeon has!!!!

Monday, January 18, 2010

She gave me an injection of Synvisc-1 (new, 1-injection treatment) to help tide me over until I can do the knee replacement some time early summer. I also am getting a custom made knee support to take "the load off" the joint (a hinged knee brace) and I also got a temporary handicapped parking permit that is good until my birthday (May 31st). I am so happy they have accommodated all my wishes and now we will see how being nonweight bearing for exercises is going to work. She said I could use recumbent bike and water aerobics. She suggested elliptical machine but I have not done well with that machine and will wait to see if I can do it in about a month or so. I am taking it easy this afternoon after the injection and plan to not overdo. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

It's good to hear that she listened to your concerns and offered temporary solutions for relief. Rest up today Teddy.

I don't think the elliptical is the easiest on the knees. Go with your gut as to what you feel safe with. Glad they were able to help you.

water aerobics are fun you should really try that, no knee impact!

Water aerobics always looked like fun to me. I love the water and used to swim at the county recreation center fairly often. I usually just treadmill now because I have one at home and it's quicker. I was laid up for 3 months with the broken ankle, but I'm back to walking on the treadmill. I'm not as fast as I was, but I'm picking up speed. I hope your recovery goes as smoothly as mine. A good doctor makes all the difference.

Having knee looked at in about 1 hour....

Monday, January 18, 2010

I am trying to be hopeful that the knee isn't completely worn out and even if it is am hopeful I can live with it this way until I can have time off work to fix it, and the doctor has a short term solution to the discomfort (hate to call it pain, but it is).

Better get ready and leave soon so I am not late for the appointment I was so lucky to get so quickly. Will update when I get back. emoticon

Maureen, my friend...

Sunday, January 17, 2010

I am so happy my friend is coming over at noon today to help me "organize" my bedroom. It has gotten to the point where I am tripping on things and with my knees being the way they are I decided I needed help so this project wouldn't take weeks.

We are going out for late lunch afterwards and that is something to look forward to. CPK (California Pizza Kitchen has some kick-*** salads (I order 1/2 salads as they are too huge otherwise.)

Temp is going up to 35 ABOVE ZERO today. A nice January thaw.... emoticon

I am so glad your friend is coming over to help you. You will love it once your knee is healed, but really take it easy and only do what the PT says you should do. Getting out for lunch is exactly what you need!! Have fun!!

High Anxiety...

Saturday, January 16, 2010

I took it easy and used my walker today and hated using it in public like I did for about 10-15 years when I was so heavy. It brought back a lot of memories that I had forgotten about, feeling out of place at the gym, etc. I did go in the whirlpool but stayed away from the exercise machines today. I actually felt so much better aftwr the whirlpool and plan to go to the therapy pool 4 times next week if possible (the hours are very limited but will do my best).

I really had a lot of pain and thought my knee was totally gone (in terms of cartilage left). I am feeling more optimistic about waiting until summer for my second knee replacement after seeing the marked improvement from taking it easy only one day.

How do you spell HIGH ANXIETY?

I am most proud that you dealt with that high anxiety...and you went out in public in spite of how you felt. I admire those that work through adversity, persevere. I believe you will reach for the "gold" and you will reach the goals you set for yourself..a little at a time.

Sometimes we don't get a choice! You did not choose to have bad knees but you have then now so take care. Use the walker when you have to but water therapy will help you be active and avoid pain. emoticon

It is so difficult when we need to slow down with injury and or pain. I know exactly how it feels as I too suffer from knee problems, had a partial replacewment several years ago and have begun having pain in that knee and leg again. So take good care of yourself and use the walker if it helps ease the situation. Think I will need to go see the doctor soon if I still have problems----I'm putting it off as I don't want to have a complete done during the winter because of the icy weather conditions we have ; but may not have much choice since loosing balance and control dsoesn't help the situation either.

Keep taking care of the knee! Keep your nutrition intact and I 'm sure you will be fine. You don't need any further injury! emoticon
