Fantastic Tuesday for exercise...120 minutes

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

I can't believe I did it. I did the treadmill a whole hour and walked 3 miles and made no excuses. Yesterday I felt bad cause I got a blister from the wrong shoes and socks and lasted only 10 minutes on the treadmill and then did not swim afterwards. But today, after the treadmill I tried my first water aerobics class and, of course, was a little confused about how to do some of the exercises and my knees got sore and got cramps in my calves, but overall I think I did more than 50% of the exercises. I plan to walk tomorrow outside if the weather cooperates. I can go around Lake Harriet which is about 2-3/4 miles around and it is a nice place to walk.

In addition I planned my food consumption and actually took in only 1300 calories and all healthy things. No ice cream. I ate half a whole wheat pita with Bettern' Peanut butter on it. After the heavy duty exerising I was ravenous and the stir fried chicken breast with salad tasted so much better. I think it was partly because I was so darn hungry. Not just hungry, but extremely hungry. I stir fried the chicken cause I knew if I waited to cook it a slower way I probably would have snacked on something not so healthy and not so high in protein. I finally have a lot of foods in my favorites (for tracking nutrition) and so keeping the food diary on line is getting easier. I really struggled with that in the beginning but now I think it is easier than keeping handwritten notes. emoticon

P.S. I actually broke a sweat on the treadmill.

Successful week for exercising...

Saturday, July 26, 2008

It did not turn out as I had planned, but I did get to the health club (gym) three times this week. I went on Monday to swim, Thursday and walked on treadmill for 45 minutes and today, Saturday I treadmilled for 45 minutes AND swam for 30 minutes, for a grand total of 150 minutes of exercising. I know I can go to the gym regularly at least three times a week. I will leave my goal at that for now and see if I can do it for 3 weeks or so before trying to increase it. I also did not eat any ice cream yesterday or today. After work, the McDonald's in the hospital (????!!!!) where I work has 50 cent cones, so it talkes a lot of willpower to keep on walking instead of turning into that place and indulging one of my biggest diet temptations. On Friday, I had an apple left over from lunch to eat on my way home. I will definitely carry healthy snacks and stay out of McDonalds this week.

Good job on going to the gym and resisting the ice cream! You know, when my husband was getting chemo at Piper I used to have that particular McDonalds as a temptation to kill time, but I wasn't so good about it as you have been! Way to go!

Plan went awry for 3 times swimming this week, but...

Friday, July 18, 2008

My goal was to swim 30 minutes three times this week. I made it two times and one day I worked in the garden for 30 minutes, so overall I feel satisfied that I did get almost as much exercise. Next week I hope to add walking on the treadmill 30 minutes 3 times a week or walking 1-1/2 hours altogether which is about 4-1/2 miles for the week at my usual speed. I know I can reach this goal. Now I just have to NOT talk myself out of it after a boring day at work when I would rather hurry home and watch Oprah on t.v.

So far, so good. I went swimming on Monday for 1/2 hour and walked about 1/2 hour but not on treadmill. Had niece in town and we went to gym together (she as my guest). Had a wonderful time. It would be nice to have an exercise buddy all the time. I should work on getting one as it made the time just fly by at the gym. emoticon

Don't talk yourself out of it, please. I know it is easy to do but once you get in the habit--it will become easier. emoticon

Sounds like you put in some good exercise this week. How is your garden coming along? I just have a small container garden but am pleased by my peppers, strawberries and cucumbers so far. Still waiting on pins and needles for my tomatoes to turn red. I hope all goes fantastic next week for you as you add your walking. You can do it!

Today I talked myself into going swimming..so glad

Monday, July 14, 2008

On my way home from work I started talking myself out of going to the gym. About halfway there, I had an argument with myself and said it is really stupid having a membership and not going. Then I was a little kinder to myself and reminded myself how much better I feel when I swim, whirlpool, do stretches and go in the steam room for 10 minutes or so. I am so glad my angel side won over the devil side. Chalk one up for the good guys!!!

Now I am winding down for bedtime and feel great, and totally relaxed. I bet I sleep well tonight, too.

I do this, too. I'll even try to talk myself out of doing the planned laps while I'm swimming. The way I feel when I'm done, as you mentioned, is the best reminder to stay with your workout.

Water, water, everywhere...

Sunday, July 13, 2008

Last week I went up 8 pounds and then down 5 pounds. This week I went up 10 pounds and then over night down 10 pounds. This must be water. I drank about 10 glasses yesterday to help flush and apparently it helped. I will try that again today even though I was going and going about every 1/2 to1 hour during the day and luckily it stopped during the night so I got a really good night's sleep. I have heard that apple cider vinegar (shooters) will help flush the excess fluid out, too, and my doctor suggested parsley pills. Keeping a sodium mg count might be useful, too, as I suspect that might have been high lately, too. Finally figured out how to keep track of nutrition on the sparks pages and it seems that until I get all my favorite foods in it is rather tedious but once I do it for a week or more it will be much easier. Any other sodium/water retention ideas are welcome. It is a sunny day in Minnesota.
