Doing a blog in eve for a change...

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

I usually blog early in the a.m. but today I was up at 4:30 and out of the house by 5:30 to go swim before work. I was in the therapeutic pool a full 45 minutes and swam and did leg exercises by the edge of the pool. The water is 92 degrees and I feel so lucky this pool is located where I work. It is at the famous (has anyone outside of MN heard of it?) Sister Kenny Institute. I feel so good during and after each swim there. I have been going regularly for 6 weeks and go twice a week before work which means on the night before I have to be in bed early so I am not tempted to turn off the alarm and go back to sleep when it goes off at 4:30. I really love swimming and my arthritis loves the warm water. It is so nice and is one of the best perks of my job. We also have a gym located in the same building that is open 24/7 and the membership comes out of my paycheck and is only $12 every 2 weeks and includes the use of the pool (though the pool hours are limited because the hospital uses the pool for patients).

I am busy counting my blessings today instead of complaining. emoticon

I've heard of the Sister Kenny Institue but I am in South Dakota so that is not so unusual. Awesome that you have access to an indoor pool. The closest pool for me is 35 miles away-shucks! Enjoy the warm water and swim a little for me!

Up early to walk on treadmill...

Monday, September 21, 2009

I gotta get movin if I'm gonna do it. Having my second big cup of coffee first and am just trying to wake up good first...my goal is 30 minutes on the treadmill and I have to make sure I have time to take a shower before I leave for work...Still have a few minutes to Spark....I am feel mentally much better than for the past few days but the hand that is bothering me is not better, but I did notice when I iced it yesterday it helped a lot so will bring ice to work today just in case it bothers me later on today and will ice during breaks and lunch time. Yesterday I walked 30 minutes on the treadmill AND swam for 35 minutes (stretches and laps). It would be great if I would (first typed could, but know I could) and that is my goal for this week. emoticon

Teddy thats great. The treadmill is great for everything. After you get used to the speed speed it up a little and try elevating it. I do a 2 point elevation with a 2.2 miles per hour. I know its a little slow but I have asthma. Since you have an easy username I'll check back on your blogs

Thanks for Spark Friends....

Sunday, September 20, 2009

Thank goodness for Spark Friends who sent nice thoughts my way on my "downer" blog yesterday. I am feeling better today after staying in my room 14 hours (with bathroom breaks, of course). Had a light supper of yogurt and green grapes.

Got some much needed rest and timeout. Now, today will have to get some exercise for sure (yesterday only walked short distance). The pool opens at 9:00 and I plan to be there with bells on.

Gotta go check my lottery ticket...wouldn't that be great to be able to pay off my bills and quit my job? Dream on...

Trying to

Saturday, September 19, 2009

It's hard some days when I know the challenges of the arthritis keep popping up. I just had left knee replacement 3 months ago and that went so very well. Some day I will need the right done also as that knee is bone-on-bone but not extremely painful yet.... anyhow I have a right trigger thumb that has become symptomatic along with carpal tunnel syndrome that the doctor wants to do surgery ASAP since I am having chronic pain and weakness. Problem is...my job, I worry I will be off too long and our department is missing 2 other people right now who do the same work I do but I don't know how long I can work like this. And then my feet started hurting again and the foot doctor wants to fix that with surgery, also, and that is both feet. I plan to go swimming today to get some exercise without the strain on my feet.... I feel like I need a time-out to fix all my joint problems, both hands, both feet and the right knee and then things would be okay...for now I will work on getting the right hand fixed and recuperated and see what hurts the most before deciding the next step. I thought the hands would be fine after the thumb joint replacements (both were done 2 years ago and 2-1/2 years ago).... but there is still pain from years of overuse as a medical transcriptionist. And here I am blogging away on my time off....perhaps I should become a woman of "few words," and stop complaining so much. LOL emoticon

You are one tough lady! I don't know if I could keep going on with life the way you do. I know that chronic pain makes life unbearable sometimes. Take care of yourself and try not to worry too much. Things have a way of working out, sometimes in ways we never expected them to.

I am sorry about your chronic pain I guess you would call it and all the surgeries you know are in your future. . You have a lot of courage just by moving. You will be in my prayers. emoticon

It is often very hard to cope with life when you are in chronic pain. Do you wear a brace on your hand for the carpel tunnel. That helped me before I had my surgery which was not bad at all. What a relief it was to have my hand "normal" again. Pray things work out for you. Hugs. Pat

Perhaps a workman's comp leave, or early retirement would be good right now?

It's difficult to feel "up" when you're in chronic pain. You're in my thoughts and prayers!
Hoping that you will have a great weekend, though, and be able to enjoy this fantastic Minnesota weather!

Good knee, not so good hands...

Friday, September 18, 2009

My three month postop check up of my knee replacement was good. Have to keep active. Saw hand surgeon yesterday and I have trigger thumb which is causing quite a bit of pain and thickening of tendon in thumb. He wants to fix it and at the same time do carpal tunnel surgery. One problem is that I just had 9 weeks off for my knee surgery and I might not have enough FMLA time left to get this done without jeopardizing my job. I haven't figured out what to do yet but hopefully I would be able to use some vacation time towards the time I need off from work....we will see, my annual review is next week and guess I will just have to discuss it with my supervisor. I am trying to stay positive but just got this news yesterday and haven't fully digested it.... emoticon

I don't have much experience on thumbs but I hope you find the time to do it soon. I know how surgery helps you get better. I had carpel tunnel surgery and I still worked some but no heavy lifting or stress on it. You might check with the Dr. to see what you are limited to. I was a janitor so I still was able to do eveerything but the floor sweeper and the vacuum. I did salads and had others put away the liquor at the restaurant. Ask first and see. Maybe you can still do it.

Teddy, discuss this with your supervisor AFTER the review is done. You might find something in your review that guides you into how to go about letting them know.

It's better to get surgery on your thumb earlier than latter. Legally they can't let you go.

Check on the surgery, the possible problems of it if any, and line things up carefully so it runs smoothly. There are thousands of things we do daily that require our thumbs.

Hugs

Karen
