Try to remember when deep in December, then follow...

Sunday, December 16, 2012

We are having frightfully strange weather this year. I live in Minnesota and last weekend we had 10 to 12 inches of snow with deplorable driving condition for most of the past week due to the fact that we got ice and chunky road surfaces covered by snow and the salt and brine mixtures didn't work cause it got so cold right after the storm.

Now this weekend the roads were better and we even had rain that helped the roads but it doesn't look like a white christmas. Today it is getting colder again after the rain and the road conditions are so bad I am afraid to go out today. Again, we have slick, icy roads.

So I am "trying to remember the summer weather" and hopefully the weather gods will be merciful so there are not so many accidents. Counting non-injury accidents there were over 1000 incidents on the roads last week. And, of course, all those fenderbenders (some worse and some not so bad) added to the traffic congestion.

Would love to take some time off this week until the weather settles down but have a backroads way to get to work so I won't have to go on the highways or freeways. I am looking forward to Christmas week and New Years week as our office will be open only 3 days each of those weeks.

In the words of a Monty Python tune, "Always look at the bright side of life." Ta-da!!!

yep, December and Minnesota means icy roads usually, but you have the spirit, and know that the violets will be blooming in a few months

Please, Christmas, don't be late....

Saturday, December 15, 2012

If you are as old as I am you might remember this Christmas song by The Chipmunks. I also have the words memorized from the flip side of the 45 RPM record I had in about 1960.

As I recall, it was one of our saddest Christmases. Our family car was repossessed, my step father went to a locked ward in a state hospital and my mom, half sister and I lived in the principal's (of my junior high) basement until he was able to find us a cheap apartment to live in (about 2-3 weeks). We became homeless as we had been living in one room at a motel and were evicted about December 1st.

The place we got had 1 bedroom and a shared bathroom (with a young married couple). We had no phone and at that time I tried finding pennies in order to buy a 5 cent packet of Kleenex so I wouldn't have to use toilet paper to blow my nose at school. I also made up a pseudo-phone number because I was so embarassd that we didn't have a phone.

Because there was only 1 double bed, my sister and mother slept in the bedroom and I slept on a rickety sofa in the living room until the legs broke off and then I slept on the floor until we were able to get a better place to live about a year later.

I was grateful we had a nice Christmas dinner at the principal's house and even got to open a couple of presents but it wasn't the same as when you have your own place.

At Christmastime (and the rest of year, too) I try to be a good girl and remember all the people who helped us when we needed it. Of course, there were some times when people mistreat those less fortunate but I try not to remember those times.

The main thing I do is pass on as much charity as I can afford to and am always careful to contribute to bonafide charities so the recipients are actually helped out in their time of need. One of the charities I gave to last year was a pharmacy fund at the hospital where I work that is for people who cannot afford necessary medications. The Red Cross and others are also worthy causes and as a teenager was a grateful recipient of those, too.

Merry Christmas to one and all! emoticon

Happy Holidays to everyone! emoticon

Hopefully it made you stronger for other challenges in life.

My family didn't always get what we wanted but the Lord always provided the things that we needed. I, too, try to give what I can. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Thank You, I am sure that was hard to write, but just think how wonderful it was that there were and are kind people, I grew up with nothing extra, always got a present, plenty of food, mostly raised, but a great childhood, wish everyone could have one.
Merry Christmas, and I hope it is a super one for you

Have to take a picture...it will last longer...

Thursday, December 13, 2012

I planned an art project for our group of 3 employees. Our department was divided into 9 groups and given a garland to decorate. We did this last winter holiday season, also, and enjoyed it so much we are doing it again this year.

Each group was given a 9 foot garland to put on a ledge in our office. We were allowed to spend some "company time" planning and decorating. (My daughter cannot believe we get paid to do these "projects" but I think it is an exercise in cooperation and competitive spirit...there is a panel of judges who will pick 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners with some small token prize. Last year my group won 2nd place but the judges succombed to bribery (they were offered cookies to eat when they were judging the 1st place winners.

We might get 2nd place again but it still was fun to plan and decorate our pine garlands.

We are the only group who has lights (battery operated), music (a music box playing Oh
Tannenbaum) and a wonderful aroma (the smell of gingerbread cookies since there are real gingerbread cookies strung together). I will take a picture...I am proud of the group effort!!! (I have to admit I MAY have gotten a bit carried away....)

Not a complaint free Sparker....

Saturday, December 08, 2012

Today was a miserable day for a continuing headache (started yesterday)...and also jaw pain and neck pain. As I was standing in a line for about 15 minutes at the post office my neck even went into a somewhat severe spasm and anyone watching me probably wondered what the hell I was doing as I tried to get the kink out of my neck, including bending over and stretching my shoulders up to try to relieve the spasm.

I do feel a lot better this evening after going swimming and then whirlpooling and plan to do that again tomorrow.

Food sensitivities and Thanksgiving...

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Let's see: Must be gluten free, onion free, green bean free, pork free, egg free, dairy free, peanut free, cottonseed oil free, bee pollen free, soy free (may be missing one or two).

No tofurkey but can have plain turkey meat smothered in my homemade cranberry sauce (sweetened with stevia). If there is a green veggie other than green beans I can have some of that (without butter).

It sounds good to me!!!!
