The mystery of the bad hamburger from Costco...

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

I bought a 10-lb piece of hamburger and when I cut into it, it was brown on the inside and red on the outside (about 2 inches all the way around). I was suspicious that a hunk of old hamburger had been doctored with new meat packed around it.

I called Costco and told the meat manager I was afraid to eat it and gave a piece to my cat before I made a meatloaf. The cat ate it and did not die. So I went ahead and made a meatloaf. The manager said I could get refund even if I did not find the original packing material and the uneaten meat. I was all set to bring in the frozen hamburger to "prove" that I had bought spoiled or old meat.

As I was driving home from work today I figure out the mystery:

We also bought a hot rotisserie chicken and it sat underneath the hamburger for the 20-30 minute ride home. And apparently the hamburger inside the hunk of meat cooked, turning it brown and drying it out.

Darnedest thing ever!!!!

I called and told the manager I had figured it out but had to leave a message for him for tomorrow as he had left for the day. I can't believe I made a big to-do about this, but the whole issue had me rattled. He might get a good laugh from this. (He already had one when I told him I fed some to my cat before I made the meatloaf for us.)

Don't you love your Kitty? Just Kiddin! Our best supermarket (and most expensive)
does that and it is upsetting with so many recalls taking place. One customer complained and they banned him from ever shopping there. To me, that is a mystery!!

I would have been very cautious about eating it too. In today's world, you never know when something is wrong with the foods that we have always eaten without any problems.

I have heard that butcher's have ways of making the meat red to appear fresh. I was told that they put it in the freezer to achieve that effect. I don't know if that's true or not, just something someone in the meat department told me.

Hmmmm. I see what you are thinking, but how would that have made it cook in the center? Or was it the bottom center? Its the kind of thing that would make me crazy too emoticon

Missed 2 days of work due to tummy troubles....

Saturday, October 13, 2012

By Friday at noon thought I was all better. I never lost my appetite but today am having cramps, etc. If I am not feeing well on Monday will have to go to work in spite of that as I am maxed out on sick days called in. Will try bland diet today and tomorrow to see if that helps.

Have been sleeping 10-12 hours per night and in morning "look like hell" so perhaps I should get an appointment with my internist next week.

Definition of looking like hell: Face is puffy with huge bags under eyes and eyelids are droopy. (The eyelid drooping could be due to myasthenia gravis for which I take medication.)

More than likely your body needs rest if you are sick but, oversleeping can also have negative impact on your health. Thoughts with you for good health.

I've done that too, esp if mug has a chip in it. I burned my thumb the other day opening one of those "bowl" bags of microwavable popcorn on the steam- caused a blister! So everybody be careful with those too.

TGIF!!!

Friday, October 05, 2012

Only thing I hate about Fridays is that we have to turn in our "production grid" at work....have been having difficulties putting times in correct columns.

it is a huge grid with about 20 categories of work duties....

We have to account for every minute of the day and meet goals of number per hour.
