I bought a 10-lb piece of hamburger and when I cut into it, it was brown on the inside and red on the outside (about 2 inches all the way around). I was suspicious that a hunk of old hamburger had been doctored with new meat packed around it.
I called Costco and told the meat manager I was afraid to eat it and gave a piece to my cat before I made a meatloaf. The cat ate it and did not die. So I went ahead and made a meatloaf. The manager said I could get refund even if I did not find the original packing material and the uneaten meat. I was all set to bring in the frozen hamburger to "prove" that I had bought spoiled or old meat.
As I was driving home from work today I figure out the mystery:
We also bought a hot rotisserie chicken and it sat underneath the hamburger for the 20-30 minute ride home. And apparently the hamburger inside the hunk of meat cooked, turning it brown and drying it out.
Darnedest thing ever!!!!
I called and told the manager I had figured it out but had to leave a message for him for tomorrow as he had left for the day. I can't believe I made a big to-do about this, but the whole issue had me rattled. He might get a good laugh from this. (He already had one when I told him I fed some to my cat before I made the meatloaf for us.)
