4 hour car trip...soreness...beyond belief

Sunday, August 23, 2009

I was sent back to work 3 weeks ago and the doctor's orders said get up and move every 90 minutes...Guess what, I sat 2 hours at a stretch in the car on a trip back home today and I am paying for the inactivity and not following doctor's orders....I think I will be going to bed early after I walk around the block. Hopefully I will be able to do that without too much trouble. Hope tomorrow at work is not affected by being more uncomfortable than usual. Tuesday morning before work I will be able to go to the therapy pool for an hour before work and I am really looking forward to that. The weekend went way too fast, visiting my sister in Hermantown, MN (near Duluth). We went shopping and out to eat for lunch and two dinners. She and I had breakfast at her assisted living and we laughed as usual. Had a great time. My husband came along and drove on the trip up and back and that was great as I don't think I could drive 4 hours each way by myself. He said he had a good time, though aside from going out to eat he spent most of his time in our rental apartment watching t.v.

I know that when I go on the drive to see my son, 3 hours is about all I can drive before I need to stop. I know how stiff you feel. Take care and have a good week.

Glad you enjoyed your visit but ouch on the trip home! We tend to stay in the car too long on drives but every time we do stop at a rest area I get out and walk around a bit. The first time I did it I forgot to tell hubby and he panicked and thought I'd had a stroke or something and wandered off...it was actually sweet and funny at the time. Now he teases me about 'trolling for truckers' when we stop...

Great weather, for ducks

Friday, August 21, 2009

We have had a drought and now it is the deluge. This damp weather is typical for August here in Minnesota, but it is hard to adjust to after such a dry summer. It is making my asthma and arthritis kick up which was pretty good until now. The worst part is having water in the basement and the mold is growing. Yuck....

I know what you're saying...I've missed the sunshine this week, but it's back now for the weekend. emoticon Hope that you and yours have a terrific one!

Oh yuck, so sorry to hear you're dealing with that. I too have had mixed feelings the last few days: we need the rain so bad but I love riding my bike in the sunshine! Oh well, I suppose I'll find a way to whine no matter what! I must say that I really enjoyed standing outside at lunch and taking in the beauty of the breaking clouds and clear blue sky.

Tornadoes yesterday....August 19, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in Mpls, MN.

Thursday, August 20, 2009

Several tornadoes came through the Minneapolis area yesterday afternoon. The worst area was about 10 blocks from where I work and about 6 miles from where I live. Luckily it hit at 2:00 in the afternoon and I was home watching all the excitement on t.v.

The tornado actually was seen coming through the downtown area and continued on for a couple of miles. Two more touched down in a south suburb and another one in a north suburb.

Lots of downed trees (which I will probably see tomorrow morning on the way to work). No major structural damage except where trees fell on houses and cars.

We survived again (tongue in cheek). It was a little close for comfort, though. We only got a lot of rain and are dealing with a couple of inches of water in the basement. Haven't heard of any personal injuries so this was a minor tornado storm compared to some that have come close in the past.

I read via email from my workplace that a false alarm was sent out to go to the basement for the tornado warning, but was then cancelled as the storm sirens were not sounded until after the tornado had passed our building. So I guess the weather people did not get the warnings out until after the first tornado had already touched down.

That's good to know that there were no injuries and not much damage. As my hub's brother lives south of Minneapolis and his parents are up there visiting right now. Hope the water clean up is an easy one.

Also...just wanted to say thank you....your list of 75 reasons inspired me to create a list of my own. What an inspiration!

I've been wondering if any of our Sparkers lived and/or worked near the tornado-damaged areas. We followed the information all afternoon and evening via TV. Thanks for sharing, and I'm so thankful that you're all right!

Does God have a sense of humor?

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Okay, now why did God make all that fattening stuff taste so good? Is this some kind of joke...eat it, you'll like it. The worst (or best) is ice cream. I get off work and what am I craving (not just in the summer---year round)? Ice cream or frozen yogurt. I have tried to find sugar free frozen yogurt or ice cream and I found on line there are companies who make it but I can't find it at my local stores. I get a little indigestion and what's my fix? Ice cream.... I scream for ice cream... I have tried to swear off of the stuff and know it is my downfall. Yesterday I had only one low cal (100) frozen fudge flavored thing and then I saw there was aspartame in it. I have quit drinking pop with aspartame and now here it is in my low cal ice cream bar, oh, God...help me find something that is cold, creamy, tasty, no sugar and low fat.... Please answer my prayer. Thanks. Teddy emoticon

Oh, as for your original question...of course, God has a sense of humor...just look at some of the people he created who think they are able to tell us all how to live and why to live...many of them without thinking that they may not be as perfect as they have led themselves to believe...LOL Listen to the advice you want to and let the rest sort of float away...Take care...Enjoy life...Sharon

I suffer from something similar but my downfall is chocolate. I've found if I let myself have one of those minis (like 40 calories for the tiny bite) that tends to get rid of my craving. But I guess that would be hard to do with ice cream! Hope you find something to fill that craving!

Teddy...I have .5 cup of ice cream several times a week...the richest , smoothest kind that God allows to be made. I pack it in a .5 cup container and take small bites which I savor slowly. It takes me longer to eat a half cup than most people take to eat a big bowl full...LOL I count the calories and fat etc etc in it and get on happily with my day.
When I started SP that's the way I did it..then I started limiting some of the foods I would allow myself and found I was overeating other things, so I'm back to measuring and tracking everything...which does include some favorites, like ice cream and nuts...I have started losing again. I plan to live this way the rest of my life, so why deny myself anything I want, when all I need to do is count it and limit the amount, not the item....Sharon emoticon

God has nothing to do with the manufacturers of addictive food substances! And, He has nothing to do with our addiction to same.

Since you crave this crap so often after work, could it be something at work making you want to sabotage yourself?

Ask yourself what you want to express instead of stuff.

Oh yes God does have a sense of humor. Just look around you at some of his creation. It certainly has to make you laugh.

As for the ice cream problem. There just aren't many options but I think that the earlier posts to you site may be your best solution. Have a blessed spark day.

God better have a sense of humour or I am in trouble! I make smoothies, frozen bananas, blueberries, strawberries, etc. add milk and blend. It is cold, tasty and refreshing and really satisfies my 'ice cream' fix!

He must have a good sense of humor, you are correct!

Try freezing some fruit in chunks then put it in a blender with some lowfat yogurt of any flavor. Makes a delicious frozen smoothie and it satisfies my ice cream cravings. It is like soft serve ice cream!

Hope this helps!

If you really sit and think about, it's not got that make them good goodies. It's man made. We make all kinds of delicious stuff and then wham. I would recommend you get some low-fat milk and your favorite fruits, put em in a blender then freeze em. My children loves that. They mostly do it with bananas but you can do it with just about anything.

Good breakfast, including fresh beets!!!

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

I always wondered why people think some foods just aren't for breakfast. As a kid, we found whatever leftovers in the fridge to have breakfast. I hated the way my mother cooked oatmeal until it was gummy and then put butter on top cause she realized there was no milk in the fridge. For years I couldn't eat oatmeal, but now like it especially when I can nuke it...and like the steel cut oats, too. I put stevia and skim milk on it and sometimes some fruit. But not today, I had to cook those beets from the farmer's market and had one without anything on it, plus a banana cold cereal and coffee. I am doing well keeping track of my food and expect to lose at least 1 lb by the end of the week. Plus I am exercising every day, too. emoticon

I eat only steel cut Irish oatmeal. Cooked from scrach. I have 1/2 serving with ground flax seed, cinnamon, sunflower seeds, 1/3rd of a banana, and 2 strawberries. It is HEAVEN!

I haven't thought about beets for breakfast. I say "each to their own". I used to eat cold pepperoni pizza for breakfast. If it works for you, go for it girl.

Last week a spark friend gave me a recipe for low cal, low fat grape nut pudding. Never had it before so I gave it a try. Ate it for breakfast the next morning and it was delicious. I say as long as it's healthy go for it! emoticon

Good for you! I love fresh, boiled and sliced beets. Breakfast.. hmmmm.

In a lot of European countries, you always get fresh veggies on the side for breakfast. Favs include cucumber, pepper, tomato.

Have a great week , going after a 1 lb. loss! Karen emoticon

When I was growing up, my Mom told my sisters and I that beets were "dessert." They were so colorful and we were so young and gullible that we totally believed her. To this day, I love beets! I have never tried them for breakfast, but your post has inspired me to do so. Thanks!
