DEXA scan results...need to make some lifestyle changes...

Don't know yet if I will need to take medication for osteoporosis or if I am only in the osteopenia stage. I am twice as likely to have a fracture according to the dr who read my scan.

I do know that I need to walk more and try some strength training. It is difficult with the upper extremities as I have a 10-lb lifting restriction due to thumb surgeries but at least I can do leg presses on the machine at the gym and walking at home in the neighborhood and on my own treadmill. I hope to gradually work up to 1 hour of walking per day but need to start out gradually so I don't overdo.

I also have not been taking calcium supplements but have been taking vit D supplements (6000 IU per day) and need to ask doctor how much magnesium I need to take and how much calcium. I am limiting dairy products due to inflammation on blood test but need to replace with other forms of calcium including greens like kale and collards, sardines (ew) and others on a list a friend printed up for me.

I was quite upset when I first read the final report on the DEXA scan but I need to calm down until I speak to my internist about the results. I will also discuss it with my rheumatologist when I see him in about a month.

    This is so frustrating! I have been dealing with this issue, too. If you haven't already, see if you should see an endocrinologist. Things like parathyroid tumors (usually benign) can interfere with absorbing calcium. Blood work may help determine the cause of your bone loss and help to determine what treatments will actually be helpful. Do your research about 'bone building' drugs before starting them.

    Ask your doctor about Vitamin K2. Apparently that helps those of us who have problems with bone density. emoticon

Monday ophthalmologist appt and Tuesday Dexa scan

I have to work 6 to 2:30 both days to accommodate those appointments. I had better go to bed about 8:00 tonight.

Plan to go to gym at 5:00 and eat steak dinner about 6:30 ot 7:00.

Had 22 grams of protein (fish, etc) for breakfast.

I am still eatng the watermelon I bought last week and it is still the sweetest one I ever et (MN slang for ate).

Had a perfect dental checkup...(can't afford to lose any more teeth)...I have lost 3 to gum disease in the past...at great expense...

It is nice to go to the dentist and get by with just 1 x=ray and nothing found to fix...

Yesterday was my mom's 106th birthday (she died at 72). She lost all her teeth to gum disease around age 50 which was a common "cure" for gum disease back in the 1950s. Hurray for modern dentistry!!!
