Sunday...and the 2-day weekend....

Sunday, June 19, 2011

I work across the aisle from a guy who started working 4 days a week when he started collecting this social security check and he seems to really enjoy the 3 day weekends. It is something to strive for in 11 months.... I would think it would make life a little less stressful and if I were getting my social security check at that time I actually could "afford" to have the extra day off. I also would be able to keep my full benefits at work. I think this is going to be my goal and this will be my "carrot" to get myself through this next 11.3 months. (who said I was math impaired?)

Good plan! There were times we worked 4 - 10 hour days and I loved the 3 days off.

Reached 5% weight loss at WW today...moth balls & mice...

Saturday, June 18, 2011

I lost 12 lb in 8 weeks which is great since I have been attempting this for the last 3 years and guess I needed some added incentive.

I love SparkPeople but I apparently need contact with a live group and also like the points system with WW better than keeping track of calories.

I have managed change a few of my habits of:
1. Not tracking (I am tracking more easily on WW web site).
2. Stopping for ice cream after work or when stressed out. (I now chose lower points items instead like yogurt and fresh fruit)
3.I am making more positive self talk than before and encouraging myself.

I still am active on Spark People but have given up tracking my food here. I do like the interaction with others on line and have made some nice friends here. I also still track my exercise here.

I think the information obtained through Spark People is excellent.

I am totally thrilled....about my weight loss.

What I am not thrilled about is my car situation. I paid $600 to have mouse damage to wires above the gas tank repaired (they had to remove the tank to get at the wires). The suggestion the mechanic had for making sure this does not happen again was to put mothballs around the car in the garage to keep the mice away.

One problem with the moth balls.... I have mild asthma and allergies and they have been triggered by the constant smell of moth balls in the car. I have been driving around with the windows open even when I want the air conditioner running...

Does anyone have a suggestion of how to keep the mice from crawling around underneath my car...something that doesn't smell so bad? emoticon

I did search on the internet and found that peppermint oil will deter mice and there are magnetic containers in which to put cotton soaked with it that can be put inside a car to keep the mice away. I am willing to try this but wonder if anyone has tried this with success? I really can't stand the moth ball smell.... emoticon

con grats on the weight loss !! I noticed the change in your attitude a while ago but did not want to comment for fear of upsetting the apple cart. Now that you have noticed Great Job!!

and get rid of the mice leave juicy fruit gum a lot of it around the garage mice love it they feed it to their young but they can not digest it -- they become terminally not hungry.

CONGRATULATIONS and WAY TO GO on your weight loss. You are doing a great job. Congratulations also on finding out what works for you and then doing it!!! WOOHOO and AWESOME!!!
My mom used some type of plug in rodent deterrent. It plugged into the outlet and I made some sort of vibration or noise that humans can't hear but it did keep the mice out of her house. I think she got them at Walmart or Agway. Hope that helps.

Weight loss is showing...can button these slacks...

Thursday, June 16, 2011

Wow..haven't been able to button this pair of slacks for ages...onward and downward (goes the scale)....

I learned my lessons about weigh-ins on Saturday at WW...don't eat 4 cups of watermelon on Friday....

This week I expect I will officially be at my 5% loss from starting at the end of April.

I am very happy about this.... emoticon

P.S. I printed my weigh-ins on Spark since May of 2008 and it has been a gradual uphill climb from 199 to 252 until finally "getting serious" about losing weight again the end of April this year. I am now down to 233 and am excited about finally being on the right path.

Buttoning your slacks is great progress. For me comfortable sitting is showing some progress. I haven't noticed a change on the scale, but I can sit in these jeans without being cut in two! Woo Hoo!
Good going! Soon you will be needing new clothes--Oh, so sad!!! Yippee!!! emoticon

Finally a couple of health ins claims have been paid...

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

There are about 20 to go, but at least I feel there is some progress. Instead of denying everything I noticed two of my denied claims have been paid (of course the smallest ones first).

All these problems with my health insurance occurred because I turned 65 the end of May and became eligible for Medicare on May 1st of this year and did not give the information regarding Medicare to the insurance company (though the hospital did receive this info and the clinics said they didn't need it). If they did send me a letter asking for this info I must have "filed it away" as when they asked me I did not even have my Medicare card or number yet.

But it does feel good to know that things will eventually be straightened out. It is very frustrating to get a dozen unpaid bills from caregivers that say I owe them so much money....

But with the payment of 2 of these bills, I am starting to believe all will be well soon. (I was told by the insurance company it could take 6 to 8 weeks to get all the denied bills paid..... emoticon

Thanks for your comments....it is gradually getting straightened out but one oustanding bill for $16,000+ is still in denial (for 24 hours in the hospital, not including consultations).... emoticon

Oh I feel your pain!!! Though I'm not on Medicare . . . yet! . . . I too have had insurance issues. **SIGH** If you don't read every single charge you ARE going to overpay!!!! It takes so much time, but it is so worth it to pay attention.

Since April there has been 3 surgeries in my household. Let me tell you, I should be on SOMEONE'S payroll with all the calls I've had to make to get things straightened. One "mistake" alone was for $5000!!! Yup, you read that right. Need I say, that charge was NOT in my favor. So, many happy phone calls later, it has been straightened out.

Hang in there!

I feel your pain. We're on Medicare and a supplemental insurance and changed the supplemental in January. We've had an awful time getting some providers to submit to the correct policy. We call every month and they resubmit but to the wrong company.

DANGER: CATS IN THE KITCHEN: Monday morning and my 18-lb cat is begging for Cheerios...

Monday, June 13, 2011

Puff is a great cat and begs for almost everything I eat.

However, Saturday night he got kind of crazy, jumped up on the stove and scrambled around making a ruckus. When I got over by the stove I discovered he had turned on the gas with one of his paws and luckily I actually saw this happen and turned off the gas which was on quite high.

The only solution to this problem I decided was to take off the knobs permanently except when using the stove. I found that the gas cannot be turned on unless the knobs or handles are in place.

One day I came home from work and the gas was on and my husband was unaware this had happened. I thought he had turned it on and forgot, but now I think Puff has done this before.

I would like to keep the cat out of the kitchen but would have to find a new place for the giant litter box (this cat is 18 lbs and somewhat of a mini-mountain lion). I know someone who suspects her cat started the fire that burned her house to the ground a few years ago. Life is full of risky things to watch out for. Sometimes it pays to be a pessimist.

Long ago I decided cats are intelligent aliens from outer space. They just act dumb to throw us off. But really how can such aloof creatures so effectively control us? Glad you came up with a knob solution.

Good idea with the knobs. The water bottle trick works as long as you have it with you when the cat is doing something you don't want...going to look for it won't work!

Kitties....I have 3 and each has their own distinct personality. We had to put LuckyBoy on a diet cause he too weight in at 19.5 pounds. We found the right food and he is losing gradually. Has more energy too.

They do like a little mischief from time to time. Turning on the stove can be dangerous...for you and for him. THEY are very creative when it comes to doing what THEY want instead of what you want. GOOD luck in finding ways to retrain is mischief side. LOL Have a joy filled day, Karen emoticon

sounds like a real stinker! My cat was also quite large, I put him on a diet. Taz was NOT happy! I gave him 1/4 of a can each morning and about 1/2 cup of dry in evening. He has since slimmed down. I increased the can to 1/3 in the morning.
My Taz thinks he is a dog! He follows me all over the house. He also gets into much mischief!

What works well is get a spray bottle and turn it to squirt NOT spray so a long stream comes out, immediately when you see Puff doing something you don't want him to do shoot him with a squirt of water while saying NO in a loud voice. After awhile all you will need to do is hold the water bottle and say no, then no will do. It does work!

Good luck! emoticon

Oh gosh, that really can be dangerous and they are just so bright and can work out all kinds of tricks that could hurt them. I also have one emotional eater - she won't eat unless you stand and love her and one very obese kitty and I am mad about my babies.

I hear you! I have five cats- one is a foster from the shelter. They have become quite the creative force- jumping gates, throwing litter out of the box, shedding so bad that I think they are creating an entire other cat. The best one was when they discovered how to open things that are latched, like my coffee table storage area. They unlatched (I saw with my own eyes) and one day while I was at work, removed the contents. Naughty, naughty, naughty.
I'm glad that you caught Puff so you could stay safe!
