I can make a few gutteral noises, including the word

Friday, May 20, 2011

Unable to say words well enough to be understood so plan to continue to rest my voice today....it is strange...my husband who is partially deaf is angry with me for not talking and using sign language (he got really upset when I wanted him to move out of my way and I nudged him)........He said I was mean....oh, well....

At that point I was trying to get to my room to see my favorite t.v. show and didn't want to be late and didn't have a paper and pen to write down "gangway!!!"

Anyhow, I am glad to be home another day and by Monday I hope to be back to work.

I have lost my voice before (last time I remember was about 20 years ago). At that time it lasted about 10 days. I have had some bouts that have lasted 2 weeks, so I am not expecting my voice to return anytime soon.

My cat has just jumped up on me, meowing, talking to me and seems disappointed that I am not talking back... emoticon

Hope you don't have to go voiceless for two weeks. Write a bunch of common messages on yellow sticky notes and post them all over the house. Next time you need to communicate you can point to an appropriate one. I think "Gangway, gotta pee" should about cover it. You don't need to mention the TV.

My command of sign language is minimal but it was enough to communicate with our oldest
son who is almost totally deaf. DD2 works for the School for the Deaf and can sign quite
fluently. But you have to learn it and use it for it to make sense. Just take care so when
your voice comes back, you can use it. HUGS!

I always tell the kids to retrace their steps when they have lost something.
oh did you expect me to be serious?
ok -- make up a couple of signs in advance including some funny ones like "quit farting" and keep them handy.
I tried to learn sign language for a deaf customer once -- when he was done laughing he showed me my name his name and the colors blue green and yellow (I work on blue print machined and these are phases of development) the told me to write if we need more information.
I did have a sign that said "quit farting" and a few were returned that are not fit for spark people..
good luck!

You are sooooo funny. You have the best way of getting right to the point, and I love that! Glad that you're home and hope that you can just hang in and retreat from the outside world and appointments for the next couple of days.

When I can't talk it doesn't mean I can't hear.......

Thursday, May 19, 2011

Had to go in person to HR to get forms for leave of absence. I hope to be back to work by Monday. I saw my internist today and she did Strep test which was negative. She prescribed Z-pak and hopefully that will help if this is a sinus infection. She said it might be a virus which the antibiotics would not help. I was running a low grade fever of about 99.5. I feel quite tired and run down and plan to sleep in tomorrow. People at work thought I was there to work and were surprised I couldn't talk. I am surprised this is the second day of no talking and it is funny when you can't talk people in the stores think you can't hear, either. I plan to get to bed early as I am extremely tired. In the hospital I didn't get much sleep for 2 nights cause so many alarms were going off ...including my own....

Glad you are back home. I hope the Z-pak. works for you. I have been given that and I told the Doc, it took away my back pain. He said the back would start up when the medicine was gone. You know...He was right! But it was nice while it lasted. Get some rest now. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I had to get a cab to go to bank...

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

I did a transfer online with a new account with my bank and the money was transferred but it seemed to disappear and finally I needed to talk to the bank. Since no one can hear me on the phone I called a cab and talked (whispered) to my loan officer and she explained to me it will show up on the account tomorrow. So at least the taxi did not have to wait long for that part of the trip.

I then had the taxi take me to the store where I could buy a powerball ticket. We got home fairly quickly and so it was not a major expense.

Tomorrow morning my friend is taking me to get my car back. After I get my car back I will talk to the HR people regarding possibly needing to take Friday off and since no one can hear me on the phone I am hoping to be able to "talk" to them in person regarding how to set up a short leave of absence (it is required on the 4th day off from work).

I then will go see my internist and see what she thinks of my condition as I am still not up to par and just had a choking feeling as I was sitting in my chair watching television. I felt better when I stood up and had a drink of water. The other thing I plan to do shortly is use my Neti pot to help clear the nasal passages. I think I am having just a major sinus problem due to extremely high pollen counts. My nurse from the insurance company called me this afternoon and was alarmed regarding my shortness of breath and I had to cut her short as the taxi was waiting outside the bank at that time. I told her I would see my internist as soon as I could get in to see her.

I have not had any dizzy spells today and so I think the medicine for that is helping already. I also am not overdoing anything today and I believe I could have driven safetly today, but not any super long distances. It is only 10 miles to where I work to pick up my car tomorrow.

It sounds like you are really not having much fun at all. Sorry about your sinus/allergy type problem. My husband always thinks it is funny when I lose my voice and I just squeek when I try to talk. I am 5 feet tall and he is 6"1 and wears a 2XLT. He calls us Mouse and Moose! That is why he thinks it is funny when I squeek!

Home today and feeling a bit better....but....

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

I lost my voice completely and had to instant message with my daughter today instead of skyping. She had her knee surgery yesterday and is having a lot of pain so it was a short "conversation." I told her about my hospital visit and that everything is good and not a serious concern about anything and I hope she is not worrying about me but is getting her rest. I called her from the ER and the hospital on Monday and Tuesday and did not let on I was there at the time and just said I had a very bad cold...(I was losing my voice at that time for it was still audible at that time).

Now I have only a very quiet whisper and my hubby who has a hearing problem cannot hear me at all. I tried to cancel my PT appointment for tomorrow and luckily they called back and I handed the phone to him to tell them I couldn't make it tomorrow.

I found someone who lives near me who can take me to get my car back tomorrow morning. So at least that problem is solved.

I ave been communiating with my supervisor, my friend and my daughter via email and others through my husband (with me writing down instructions for him)...

It is a bit like being deaf even though I can hear well, but no one else can hear me. Have had several serious bouts of laryngitis in the past and at least I know it didn't last more than a week or two. I am hoping to be able to work on Friday but will not panic if I can't...for sure by Monday I should be "good to go." At least I won't be expected to answer the phone ...if it rings I will have to let whoever is calling leave a message and then have someone else return their call.... it seems a bit odd but I know it is do-able. emoticon

After the purple fingers...had 3 severe dizzy spells on Monday....

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Ended up in the ER and their two main concerns were stroke and heart problems. One doctor thought I might possibly need a pacemaker as my heart rate was dropping down into the 40s.

They kept me overnight and today had a cardiology consult. My heart checked out and so did all my enzymes. I had an MRI of the head and neck last night and that was okay, too, ruling out strokes, tumors, etc.

The cardiologist had the opinion that it was a middle ear dysfunction (vertigo) causing the dizziness and Raynaud's causing the finger discoloration. I am finally home and hope to get some sleep since the hospital is no place to rest....

Will follow up with my internist soon and perhaps will need an ENT referral (ear, nose throat specialist).

Everyone knows you need rest to heal, but as you say a hospital is no place for that. And don't get me started about the food, I can rant for hours!
Hope you get it sorted out soon! Now go get some sleep.

It seems that there is always something going on but you do all the right things by going
to get checked out. Good luck with the internist and ENT. HUGS!
