Pep talk? Need one...Baby steps...remember "What about Bob?"

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

I am determined to get my weight down....

I need to focus on those baby steps and doing those little things that add up to big changes.....

1. Drinking 8 cups of water a day... (and tracking them)
2. Watching portion control (and tracking my intake)
3. Exercising every day..even when I don't go to the gym.
4. Stress reduction including deep breathing exercises and looking for clues on Spark people.

enough steps...don't want to track every step or I will get stressed out....

I just went to a management seminar yesterday and one of the things that stuck with me is that any list with more than 3 steps will become overwhelming. Take it slow and it WILL add up.

Young @ Heart (a documentary worth watching)

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

So I have another 2-1/2 hours until check-in time and I am at my desk at work (work 3 blocks from the hospital).

I will have a nice walk over there in about 1-1/2 hours. I just couldn't stand the idea of being in the waiting room for 3 hours. The time of the procedure was change to an hour later.

Watched a neat documentary last night recommended by my daughter: Young @ Heart, about a singing group of seniors who sing modern rock and punk songs. It was such a nice film. I heartily recommend it...it's on Netflix instant play.

Good-bye winter?

Thursday, March 31, 2011

Whoever announced March 21st as the beginning of spring did not live in Minnesota. I remember one year when in central Minnesota we had frost in June and August.

Why do we live here?

One good reason is the town I live in is #2 on the list of 100 cities of over 25,000 as the safest cities in America. (I like safe!!!).....

Today the high is predicted to be about 46....with possible snow showers about midnight

Well, perhaps safe = cold.... (those criminals stay home most of the time staying close to the furnace or fireplace)....

True. Yesterday my husband came back to the table at a restaurant and asked what my SIL and I were talking about. I replied "What Minnesotans always talk about." He said, "oh, the weather." LOL

Why I am afraid to drive across train tracks, especially the commuter train...

Saturday, March 05, 2011

I have had at least three close calls when driving across train tracks and the latest occurred about a year ago when I drove home a different route than usual and came to a train crossing for the commuter train....

I did not see or hear any warning...and when I got on the track the bar on the other side came down in front of me and a train was coming!!!!

Quickly I threw the car in reverse and backed up without even checking to see if anyone was on the side of the track I came from....and as I backed up the bar came down almost hitting the hood of the car and I watched the train go speeding by about 15 seconds (or less?) ...it was what I would call a close call and since then I have been doing my best to avoid all train tracks, especially the commuter train tracks...

Personally I think there was some sort of malfunction since the bar did not come down at the same time on both sides and I did not hear a bell (as usually happens at these crossings)....

About a month later I had an exciting experience with a stuck gas pedal on my car and my daughter was luckily with me who figured out the pedal was stuck under the mat which had not been rehooked in the car wash by the attendants ..I was entering the freeway and was up to 70 miles an hour before my daughter was able to release the gas pedal from the floor mat.....that one was equally scary...

Since then (about a year ago) I have not had any other scary incidents...but when I think of these two I think my blood pressure goes up and I thank my lucky stars and know I have a guardian angel or two (one is my daughter).... emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I always take the mats out of my cars for that very reason. It's way too much risk for something cosmetic! What if you had to slam the brakes quickly and the mat got caught under them?

This also reminded me of my irrational driving fear. Ever since the Minnesota bridge collapse in 2008 (I think?) I'm quite afraid to go through tunnels, under bridges, or across them. It's so irrational...but *every* time I'm near a bridge, I think about it collapsing. And I wasn't even involved in the real bridge collapse!

I know someone who got her car hit by a train on a level crossing, luckily she wasn't hurt as the train was going slow.
The trains we have here are steam trains and are more of a tourist attraction than regular transport.
Her husband didn't believe her when she rang him to say she had been hit by a train,he has never let her forget it.

Smart girl regarding the floor mat. We have all kinds of railroad tracks around here without electric warnings. Fortunately the train never goes over 35 miles per hour. I would find the commuter trains scary too.

i know at least one train crossing at a little town of kingsthorpe has know boom gates and the bell is turned of it is dangerous used to hate driving over that the only worning sound was the train whistle.

Train tracks are very dangerous I'm not fond of them myself. Usually thebar on the opposite side only covers the oncoming lane. I would report that intersection to the state highway safety department so no one else gets trapped there.
Be carefull.

A true story from 40 years ago...(statute of limitations has run out)....

Friday, March 04, 2011

I was showing slides from a tropical trip my mother-in-law had gone on to my fourth grade class when a picture of a banana tree came up... and there was laughter in the back of the room....

I asked the boy who was laughing so hard to share what was so funny (big mistake) and he said the banana bunches looked like weiners.

I said they don't grow on trees. The boy next to him said that's not the kind of weiners he meant. To which I answered, "They don't grow on trees, either."

The whole class was stunned into silence and then whispers of "What did she say?"

Click..moving onto the next slide....
