Three more days off for bereavement....really?

Wednesday, December 08, 2010

It is nice to have the rest of the week off for bereavement but the reason is not so nice....My husband's sister died a week after my sister died. My sister died after 10 years in assisted living. His sister died after approximately 10 years of Alzheimer's and had just been moved to a nursing home this past summer. The feeling of the families of both of these losses is a combination of loss, yet relief as they both had finally lost any quality of life and our sisters had suffered enough, so we feel God was good in calling our sisters home, though it leaves a hole in our families.

I appreciate all the supportive sparkers who have sent me condolences and comments on my multiple blogs of late. It has helped me to feel less alone...thanks so much!!! emoticon

Wow, the world does work in starnge ways sometimes. My mom died with Alzheimer's although not from it exactly. There is relief in the sense that once the quality of life it gone why suffer. I have asked that question many times.

Multiple losses by death in any family is extremely hard. Take the time to work thru the loss. You and your husband are fortunate that you have each other for comfort and each of you understands what the other is going thru.

God's blessing to you as you recover from your loss.

So many are being called home. As much as you will miss them, you are right in the fact that they now have release and quality back in their lives. The freedom from the earthly body can be a wonderful thing. Prayers for all of you are being said.

Hugs,
Wanda

More reality...that is not so pleasant...

Tuesday, December 07, 2010

My sister died a week ago yesterday. I just went back to work today after 6 days off work. I checked my messages before I left work and my husband found out his sister died yesterday. I just can't believe it....so I will have 3 more days off for bereavement this week and the funeral is on Saturday about 25 miles from our house. I hope we have good weather for that.

My supervisor was still there when I found out and she can hardly believe it, either.

I will be spending tomorrow night at the hospital for my second sleep study to get my CPAP adjusted. I am hoping that will get my oxygen level up to normal when I am sleeping.

Reality bites....

Tuesday, December 07, 2010

I am a bit upset to find out the macular degeneration in my right eye is advancing. Because it was just in the beginning stages a year ago I was not very concerned about it. I actually thought my vision was improving as I don't need my glasses for driving. I do find my eyes fatigue more quickly than in the past and I have had some difficulty seeing small icons on my job at the computer. My prescription changed but not enough to warrant buying new glasses.

One of the hospitals Allina owns (my employer) is Phillips Eye Institute and I plan to look at their website at work today and talk to someone there regarding referral to a vitreoretinal specialist (I like my ophthalmologist but really want to see a retinal specialist). The doctor said injections can help the wet form of macular degeneration but I really don't know the statistics on this. I do know if that is what he wants to do that time is of the essence. I hope the timing of all this turns out well for me.

I've had several injections in my eyes not for md but for vascular occlusion. If you have any questions I let me know using spark mail.
Good Luck!!

My mother has the wet form in one eye and the dry form in the other. She has been getting injections in the eye with the wet form for about 6 months now. The day after the injection she can't see but she still has her vision. From what I understand if you don't get the shots you lose your vision fairly quickly.

Wow, that must be tough. I hope there is something that can be done to stop or slow the degeneration. Best of luck!

Macular degeneration is advancing in right eye...

Monday, December 06, 2010

I am scheduled for a tomographic scan next week. Ophthalmologist said if it looks like wet AMD (age-related macular degeneration) he said injections (he did not say what kind of injections) are supposed to help.

I have decided to get a second opinion before going ahead with any injections and would prefer to see a vitreoretinal specialist. I have a friend who had injections and she said they helped her but she has not followed up for 10 years now and I told her she should go back but she is like an ostrich..... emoticon

I'm sorry to hear that. Seeing a specialist is no doubt a good thing.

SparkPeople Health Topics has an article on that, I just read it not long ago.

Forgot to do trivia yesterday////where did Sunday go?

Monday, December 06, 2010

Today is my last day of vacation (3 days were for sister's death a week ago). Today is a "vacation" day to go for yearly eye exam and take hubby in this afternoon for a crown. He is not a happy camper about this so I have promised him he can have nitrous oxide (laughing gas) which will be an extra $40 charge. After this crown I will be shopping for a more reasonably priced dentist as I think he is quite high compared to other local dentists and his office is about 15 miles from home. Even with good dental insurance the yearly benefits top out at $1200 and I wiped out my benefits in January last year. Hopefully I will not have another root canal/abscess and/or bridge this year.

As for the eye doctor...I am expecting good news as my eyes have actually improved this past year. I got driving glasses (for distance) and about 2 months ago I noticed the signs getting blurry (actually a shadow or double vision) which completely went away when I took off the glasses. I have been driving without those glasses now and actually am seeing very well. I still need my reading glasses for things close up but that is an improvement over last year. On my exam last year the eye doctor said I had grade 1 of 10 cataracts and 1 of 10 macular degeneration. So going to see the ophthalmologist (an MD) is a necessary thing since both of those eye conditions run in my family.

I got up at my regular time this morning instead of "sleeping in" as I did most of this past week while "on vacation." It is easy to get into bad habits if we try even a little bit.

I did have a healthy breakfast this morning and stayed within a reasonable calorie range.

Hope everyone has a great week!!! emoticon

Back in the swing of things - that's good.

I quit going to my former dentist - go tired of supporting his lifestyle (exotic card, exotic dogs, fancy hillside home, etc. etc. etc.). My friend recommended a better one, which I will go to next year.

Hope your hubby's root canal goes smoothly.

I'm sorry about your sisters death. emoticon

My eyes have been getting worse every year since 40. I will be going back in January and I know i need a new subscription. I had a grandmother who was legally blind after cateract surgery so I make sure I go every year and get checked. These are not inexpensive test, but important.

My dentist charges $65 for gas, and of course insurance doesn't cover it:) So maybe your dentist isn't so high priced. Have a great day!

Hope your DH comes through the dentist visit OK.

I have found that I get up early every morning since I retired. I don't want to waste a minute of my day--and I can get quiet time this way.

You have a great day! emoticon
