Slowly it is getting easier

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Today I had a goal of walking 5 laps around the war memorial....each lap is maybe 1/8 of a mile so it is a short loop so my 4 laps total probably only 1/2 mile walked. But today I could only do 4 and not the 5 I wanted to do. But I was not upset or discouraged by that because I was walking faster today as mom and I finished those 4 laps in just a little over 20 mins......it has been taking me 25-30 mins to walk the 4 laps so it is getting easier!

I finally got a 9v battery for my new talking scale and got that in today so in the morning I will do a new weigh in. The last time I weighed was several months ago and now I have a scale that I know will weigh me accurately i am eager to see where i am today and will look forward to that electronic telling me what I weigh and will look forward to hearing "her" say a smaller number each time.

I'm excited to hear from you that the scale will be helping you keep track of your forward motion!! I'm sure you will hear smaller numbers from "her" :)

Walking is going well

Sunday, August 14, 2011

Friday was day 3 of walking with mom. We used the paved loop at the memorial section of the park and I forced myself to walk farther than comfortable to walk to work those back muscles before i would sit down......meaning i walked past a couple of benches before i sat down when i wanted to sit at the first passed up bench. I lasted 30 mins on friday before i had to stop for the day.

Saturday was 6 hours of in and out of the pick up and walking around at yard sales so i gave myself 60 mins total of exercise for the day. By the end of the yard sales I was pretty sore in my knees but I know that just means i have used them and that is a good thing LOL....one day i will realize that either it is taking longer for me to get in pain or that the pain just never showed up and I look forward to that day!

Day 2 of walking

Thursday, August 11, 2011

Today mom and I walked the same route at the same park. The first part was painful for my feet and knees but that soon worked out and was gone by the time we were half way to the bridge which is our first rest break spot for me but by the time we got to the bridge my back was hurting so I leaned against the railing and we watched the ducks swimming on the creek. Then we were off to the green electrical box for break number 2 and I had less pain in my back today by the time we reached the box so that was good to feel but I still was in pain and needed the break. Then we turned around and headed back to the bridge and more back pain and my 3rd rest to watch the ducks. Then we headed back to my truck and I was hurting but no where near as bad as yesterday at the finishing point.......took us still 25 mins to walk it but I am glad I am doing this!

Day 1 of walking

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Today was day 1 of walking with mom. We decided to not use the high school track as it was full of kids and I did not want that so we took on plan B we had already decided upon and I think plan B will be the better plan in the long run. We went out to Timberlin park to walk the path there. It worked out great because from where i parked we walked till we got to the bridge that crossed the creek and I rested against the bridge rails to get the back spasms to stop. Then we continued on till we got to one of those large green metal electrical boxes where i desperately needed to sit or lean against something to get the back spasms to stop. It was too tall to sit on so I just leaned against it.........that was our turn around point to where we walked to the bridge and I rested again to release the back spasms. by the time we got back to my truck my lower back was screaming at me and my right thigh was totally numb(yes I know I have a pinched nerve going on when i stand or walk for too long).......I wanted so badly to sit on a bench but I was maybe 100 feet from the truck and I pushed on!!!!! I am so proud of myself for choosing that last 100 feet over sitting........I have no idea how far that walk we took was but it took us 25 mins to go and come back. I am pleased with day 1 of only needing 3 rest stops in that 25 min walk!

We do it again tomorrow at 10am and I am actually looking forward to it!

Walking plan

Friday, August 05, 2011

My mom and I are going to begin a walking program together. We will do our first walk together on August 10th.....we chose that day as it is the first day of my vacation time that way i can devote my energy to the new program without also having to go to work......by the time I go back to work on the 22nd i will be use to the walking routine.

We will go to the high school track to begin with because there are bleachers i can sit on if the back pain gets to be too much and I need a rest. It will also allow us to begin 1 lap at a time(1/4 mile). Once i know I can walk some distance without needing to sit we will find a neighborhood route to walk together.

In the mean time I still have to do some extra uncomfortable walking at work this weekend. It is the county fair Saturday and we were told ALL 3 have to go to this so that will mean walking/pushing a wheelchair in hot weather for a couple of hours this Saturday(tomorrow).

Once i get to walking as exercise i will no longer dread these outings at work LOL...i will actually once again look forward to them as i miss getting out with them but the physical part is just sooooooo hard for me right now.....BUT with this new walking commitment with Mom those days will soon be over!

    Hey, this is exciting!
Though I haven't been the best example, I will say that the more I walk, the stronger I feel. You can do this!

What a great way to get started. You can do this! Just keep your head up and remember that even if you only loose a pound that it is ONE WHOLE pound towards your goal and that you need to celebrate all the small things. I wish you much luck and success on your journey! Looking forward to updates
