In the interest of making better food choices, I thought I would share about why and how I have decided to do my best to get Monosodium Glutamate out of my diet.
What is it?
“Glutamic acid found in unadulterated protein does not cause adverse reaction. [It is an amino acid used as a building block of cell protein.] To cause adverse reaction, the glutamic acid must have been processed / manufactured or come from protein that has been fermented.”
You will discover that MSG is considered a natural flavor enhancer, making the blandest, cheapest food taste better; it also masks off flavors. “Trade names of monosodium glutamate include Ajinomoto, Vetsin, Ac'cent and Tasting Powder.“
Processed free glutamic acid (MSG), the bad guy, has a variety of aliases assigned to keep consumers duped about its presence in commercial products.
Why use it?
“It all comes down to our taste buds… MSG stimulates…receptors on our tongue, enhancing the savory flavor...” “…popular way to add flavor to packaged foods such as soups, sauces, seasonings, and instant snacks.”
So what is the big deal?
“The most common symptoms of MSG sensitivity are headache, flushing, tingling, weakness, and stomachache. After eating meals prepared with MSG, people with MSG sensitivity may have a migraine, visual disturbance, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, tightness of the chest, difficulty breathing, skin rash, or sensitivity to light, noise, or smells.”
“The risks associated with ingestion of (or even contact with) monosodium glutamate and other ingredients that contain MSG are simple and straightforward:
1. .“…research in Spain that showed MSG increased appetite in animals by 40%...”
2. “Diseases which may be exacerbated by MSG, are autism and any disease treated with the following commonly prescribed glutamate BLOCKERS - Abilify, Amantadine, Baclofen, Gabapentin, Haloperidal, Ibuprofen, Ketamine, Lamotragine, Lithium, Liraglutide, Namenda (Memantine), NBQX, Riluzole, Tizanodine, Topiramate, Tramadol, as well as Vitamin B12, Vitamin E and Vitamin C.”
3. “Diseases which may be caused by MSG are obesity, Type II diabetes, and high blood pressure.”
4. “…MSG contributes to the problem in both Alzheimer's patients and autistic children…”
5. “Approximately an hour after consuming a meal containing MSG, certain people may experience symptoms ranging from a rash to a migraine-level headache or even anaphylactic shock. For this reason, many Asian restaurants have voluntarily stopped using monosodium glutamate altogether, or have specific notifications about its use.”
6. Many vaccines contain MSG listed by its alias names.
7. Based on peer reviewed studies, there is no question that glutamic acid is neurotoxic. This can be easily confirmed by accessing MEDLINE retrieval service for studies dating from 1966 to the present, using the words "glutamic acid" in combination with the words "brain lesions" and then "neurotoxicity." I would also suggest that you look up the words "learning disabilities," "obesity," "asthma," "tachycardia," and "seizures" in combination with the words "glutamic acid."
8. “…if you think you are immune from the effects of MSG because you don't have the autism genes, or the Alzheimer's genes, or high blood pressure, note that free glutamic acid acts on the pancreas to secrete insulin and acts to stimulate hunger by targeting the amygdala and hypothalamus and creates valium-like GABA in otherwise HEALTHY folks. “
9. Many other suggested effects of MSG: lupus, foggy thinking, depression, migraines, asthma, atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, low energy, cholesterol problems, Parkinson’s Disease, addiction, stroke, epilepsy, ALS, brain trauma, neuropathic pain, schizophrenia, brain lesions, anxiety, overweight, obesity, hormonal and reproductive problems, and so on. “
What is the challenge?
1. “MSG is often hidden in food in deceptive and misleading labels that say `No Added MSG,´ `No MSG Added,´ and `No MSG”
In this article, it is mentioned that many manufacturers, realizing that many people do not want MSG in their food, use vague and acceptable lingo such as "chicken stock," “hydrolyzed protein,” "natural flavor," and "vegetable stock." Disturbingly, these terms probably mean that the product contains MSG! At the end of this article, you find instructions on how to ask a manufacturer about their product. You will need this info so that you are not misled.
2. Since 2001, crops can be liberally, sprayed with processed free glutamic acid in uncontrolled amounts. The crops absorb it and, without knowing it, we ingest it!
“In 1997, a company called Auxein Corporation (now known as Emerald BioAgriculture) asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to approve spraying processed free glutamic acid (MSG) on all growing agricultural commodities including grass, nuts, seeds, fruits, grains, and vegetables. Auxein/Emerald BioAgriculture also asked the EPA to register their pesticide product called AuxiGro WP Plant Metabolic Primer (AuxiGro) as a plant growth enhancer for use to increase yields and the quality of crop plants and early ripening in certain vegetables. AuxiGro contains processed free glutamic acid (MSG).”
“The January 7, 1998 Final Rule sanctioned the use of unregulated amounts of processed free glutamic acid (MSG) (calling it "the biochemical glutamic acid") regardless of how much processed free glutamic acid (MSG) residue might be left in or on any or all food commodities when bought by consumers.”
“In its December 6, 2000 petition, Auxein/Emerald BioAgriculture asked that there be no limits to the amounts of those chemicals when used on any food commodities for any uses regulated by the EPA.” This became a rule as of June 21, 2001.
Nowadays, it is extremely difficult to avoid. Globally, because it is generally recognized as safe, it used as an accepted substitute for salt! Many internet sites are available to help you if you are interested in cutting this out of your eating. I am listing a few good ones:
PatientHandouts/Hidden Sources of MSG.pdf
Let me propose to you that you make healthier choices and avoid additives, as best you can, by choosing
3. Few and known ingredients on labels
4. Manufacturers you trust
5. Few canned and processed foods
6. Learn about natural sources of vitamins and minerals
7. Prepare your own with fewer ingredients
8. Eat at home more
9. Eat out less
11. Read and research so you know the facts and understand labels
12. Speak up to your family, friends, neighbors, local assemblies when you know the truth about additives, fertilizers, pesticides, etc.
13. And, Speak up about the safe products and resources you do find

So what am I eating these days? Thought I would kinda outline it for you, starting with why.
Why? I have been on a plateau for over 2 years. After I joined SparkPeople in March 2006, I worked hard to lose 40 lbs. We made a trip and I bought new clothes. It was a 7 month trip and we ate out a LOT! After that trip, my Dad was diagnosed with colon cancer, had surgery, died and was resuscitated. I then spent a month helping my family with my Mom´s care and encouraging Dad. He came home from the Care Center a few days before I returned to my home and husband. Shortly after getting home I weighed in to find that I had gained back 20 of the 40! S-c-a-r-e-y!!!
Thus began a most discouraging 2 and half years of working VERY hard, determined to lose again. I did not DIET for I had decided long ago that I had dieted too many times in my lifetime and that´s prob´ly why I was in the shape I was! What I learned from SparkPeople was and is to make Healthy Choices every day. I have done that these 2+ years and I have plateaued for 2+ years! It has been discouraging - yes. And...I have not given up, given in, or quit SparkPeople!
About a month ago, I read two articles that gave me an idea for a different plan of action that I am going to do for several months. 13 days ago, I started eating around 1560 calories/day including as close as possible to 67 grams carbs, 105 grams fat, and 83 grams protein. This is not an approved SparkPeople eating plan. It is similar to the high protein diets that are around. I have now lost 4 lbs. and have not felt hungry at all. I had not wanted to go back to animal proteins, but bit-the-bullet, so to speak, hopeful that this will not be for a lifetime and I can one day return to vegetarian.
I do not like that the meat I am ingesting is probably not organic – there is no way to tell here as the packaging is not trustworthy even when it says it´s one thing. (I am in Brazil, remember.) So I am assuming it is not without hormones and pesticides. I am choosing to do the best I can and get the weight off! Other methods have not worked in these 2+ frustrating years!!!!
Oh, I also read about L-carnitine and chromium. I am taking the L-carnitine until I empty the bottle, and then will take chromium till I empty that bottle. I decided to take them separately so I would know for certain if either one helps. Perhaps later, I will take them together; not sure – they are not cheap here.
One way that I have increased protein is to use whey. It is relatively inexpensive and does not contain anything except high protein whey – made from milk and without lactose. I am including eggs, unsalted butter, unsalted peanut butter, olive oil, avocadoes, olives, cream, light mayonnaise, and mostly aged full fat cheese. I am certain that these things contribute to my feelings of satiety. It is wonderful to not feel hunger and rarely have cravings for anything. I have been considering adding unsweetened cocoa back into my eating plan. Everything is measured, weighed, and counted carefully.
Yesterday, I cut my intake a bit to be on the lower side of my calorie range. I am making every 8th day somewhat of a free eating day, staying around 2000 calories and enjoying a few more carbs than the other 7 days. I thought it would help my planning and also use up some of the carbs that are sitting around here – don´t want to just throw them out! I am not eating out but perhaps once or twice a month. I find it a problem to control things if I do so it is better to just not!
I am not eating processed meats, avoiding monosodium glutamate, peeling produce that is high on the list for pesticides, avoiding white sugar, and using only pure stevia, rapadura (unprocessed brown sugar), or a little agave syrup or honey. Been reading about the sweeteners again and don´t think I will buy agave any more - want to find out more about dextrose. I have eliminated baking pretty much and breads, for the time being, so do not sweeten much except my coffee (back to 1 cup a day), tea, and sometimes a peanut butter mix/snack.
That´s it for now - I will letcha know if I lose anymore. Did not exercise much this week but will get back on it next week. Working. Relaxing some with old DVDs and the cats.

This is for reference and to keep on training with my 20 lb kettlebell. I am excited to have ordered 2 - 15 lb. kettlebells. Hoping they come soon. I ordered 2 the same size so I can work on a few new movements requiring holding one in each hand. This is going to be a great challenge!
Some of the moves I am trying to master:
Windmills (for obliques, glutes and shoulders; keep both legs straight)
Cleans (in lower position, hold so thumb is pointing behind, in rack position thumb pointing back; if hip snap is weak, cleaning the KB off the floor instead of from knees sometimes helps to generate enough power) www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
Two Hand Swings www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
Burn 300 Calories in 15 Minutes (4 exercises; it will be awhile before I can do the Deck Squat!)
Kettlebell Workout for Amazing Arms
Get Sleek And Slim: the Kettlebell Workout
One-Arm Kettlebell Snatch
Kettlebell workout: A stronger, sleeker you! (Not doing ALL of these just yet)
One-Arm Swing and a few others that are too challenging at this point (pdf format)
Also doing Arm Curls, Single Arm Row, Double Arm Tricep Extension, and Abdominal Twist
This week has turned out to be a bit different than I had planned, but I am not stressing over it. Had some unexpected correspondence that took more hours than I could´ave imagined. Had some new grief bring up old grief, which I do not see as anything more than the way life was and is. Hit you in the face, knock you around for a bit, then you gain control and move on having gained more wisdom. Got behind on everything and it will take time to catch up. My desk is looking cluttered once again.
Still not getting into the project I want to get going on and FINISH! I am thinking I will hafto start the firm No´s again and take a leave of absence from EVERYTHING like I did last year from Jan-March. Seriously. That is the only answer I can think will resolve this problem and get me going! It may be the ONLY way.
I must make the decision if I am going to progress. I have managed to keep up with the exercises, although not as much as I would like. I also revamped my eating plan and feel like this may help a lot. Today is the 2nd day, so we will see how it goes.
This is MY Life, after all!

Another thought for Valentine´s Day. Last week I talked about what´s in my heart these days. Now who. It is not a matter of priority, as in who I love the most, or even about who I think about the most. This list is about who is in my heart and mind (which sometimes take up the same space, it seems to me). It is not always positive in regard to these that are in my heart and mind and I struggle sometimes in dealing with that. Once upon a time, I was so overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted by some of these people and things that I was paralyzed to do anything, let alone take care of myself and my family. I am grateful that those years are past and I have grown up.
So...who and what is in MY heart?
~God (I talk to Him as if He was right beside me and I feel like He is)
~my children (I am proud of them and their spouses and long to participate in their lives)
~friends and family who are suffering (some are ill, some are struggling, some are grieving)
~my pets (2 cats, 2 dogs, 3 turtles)
~me (I want to do what is best for my health and well-being and sometimes I must just let others think what they think and then go about doing what I know is best even when others disagree. I do not like being perceived as selfish, self-centered, or___put any other word of criticism in there____. I have decided not to try to change another´s perception - just live my life the best I can!)
~grief, sadness, disappointments (over situations beyond my control, losses, and missing loved ones)
~stories I´ve read, ones I know from my past experience, and others that I will come to know in time
~the gratitude that I feel for the few individuals who love me unconditionally. (For many years I was told and, eventually believed what I was told, that I was too different from everyone else, that my thoughts and ideas were abnormal and did not contribute in a positive way to the world, much less, to the people around me. I learned to dislike myself to the point of wanting to extinguish ME! It took me a very long time to finally understand that it was because I questioned the motives of others making them feel uncomfortable to the point that they needed to pressure me into being quiet and slipping out of the picture. They had freedom in many areas, I had next to none. They could be creative, I could not.)
~the love for color and the desire to color my world (I breathe easier when I find beauty in nature; I love to create it in various ways around me)
~words (I have an innate longing to understand and be understood through words)
Occasionally, I am surprised that someone enjoys spending time with me. It is even more amazing to me when someone expresses that they enjoy or are refreshed by my perspective on things. I do not think like the crowd and I am not easily convinced like I was when I was naive of the dark side of life. I s´pose that is one good thing about darkness - it makes the Light brighter!

What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful) by The Backstreet Boys with Lyrics
A cute illustrated presentation of the same song but without the lyrics for hearing impaired -
6/9/2010 WHITE-LOTUS posted this which I think explains what happened to me when I awoke from the stupor of neglecting self care.
"I am alive and awake in the present moment. When I am mindful, I am fully conscious of the present moment. My thoughts are not fixed on the past or projected into the future. Alive with awareness, I don't let life pass me by. I am present and able to make conscious choices. Dailyword"
VALERIEMAHA put this poem in her blog months ago. I find myself rereading over and over.
An open sandy shell
on the beach
empty but beautiful
like a memory
of a protected previous self.
The most difficult griefs
ones in which
we slowly open
to a larger sea, a grander
sweep that washes
all our elements apart.
So strange the way
we are larger
than we imagined
we deserved or could claim
and when loss floods
like the long darkness it is
and the old nurtured hope
is drowned again
even stranger then
at the edge of the sea
to feel the hand of the wind
laid on our shoulder
how death grants
a fierce and fallen freedom
away from the prison
of a constant
and continued presence,
how in the end
those who have left us
might no longer need us
with all our tears
and our much needed
measures of loss
and that their own death
is as personal
as that life of theirs
which you never really knew,
and another disturbing thing,
And they for themselves
are glad to have let go
of all the stasis
and the enclosure
and the need for them to live
like some prisoner
that you only wanted
to remain incurious
and happy in your love
never looking for the key
never wanting to
turn the lock and walk
like the wind
unneedful of you,
-- David Whyte (Everything is Waiting for You)
