jogging!

Monday, June 22, 2009

So, my family has gone back home and I now have my life back! This is super exciting, as now I can try and resume my quest to a healthier lifestyle. After finishing my thesis and winding down, I definitely think it's time to get that going again. This weekend, I started jogging! I'm not going to far yet (only 1 mile at a time), but I am jogging the whole way. Also, the 1 mile route I have is tough. It's downhill one way, but the way back home is entirely uphill. This is a half a mile hill we're talking about. It's not the best choice, but living out of town, it's the safest route for me to take. Also, it's a challenge. For now, I am working on my endurance and trying to decrease my time. Once I am comfortable with this, I will try and work up to doing the route twice. I think I might also try and go to the track to run a couple of times a week to build up my endurance a bit as well. Also, as of today I am back tracking my food and trying to jump back into this lifestyle headfirst.

CONGRATS!! Being able to jog an entire mile is a huge step. Good luck in adding more distance to your jog! emoticon

Sounds like my Quest for Mail--those hills on the way home are doozies, but well worth it for the workout.

getting back into the swing of things...

Monday, June 15, 2009

Well, it's been a while since I've posted and I'm sure a lot of you have been wondering how my thesis defense went...

It went great!!! I couldn't have asked for it to go better! The presentation went well, I was super prepared for the questioning, and the deliberation was less than 5 minutes! Yay! I had a few minor revisions (typos really) and I finished those up in time to go through the convocation ceremony! My supervisors were really proud of me too, which is awesome! So, now my MSc is done, and right now I'm doing a bit of contract work, deciding whether to jump right into a PhD or to look for a permanent job and work for a while. Any advice here would be super!

On the diet and exercise note, I've dropped off the face of the planet... I really need to get back into things. I haven't stepped on a scale in a long time, but I am guessing that I gained a lot of what I had already lost back. I'm starting to watch what I eat and starting next week (I have company coming this week from out of time) I am going to begin tracking faithfully. I've also decided that I am going to start going to the track and begin jogging. Again, this will probably not start until next week, as taking an extra hour or whatever out of my day when company is here can be a little rude... but I will make myself a schedule and stick to it this time. With the thesis out of the way, it shouldn't be a problem to stick to a schedule.

On another note, my grandma is still in the hospital, and won't be going home. They have assessed her and decided that she needs to go into a full care facility, and won't be able to leave the hospital until a space becomes available. This is quite sad, but it will definitely be a good thing for her, as this is the 3rd time in 3 years that she's been in the hospital. She is really up and down, but overall, she is doing a lot better. She isn't mobile yet, but she is mentally a lot more with it than she had been. This is good news.

Congratulations on the defense! I'm sure that everything else will also fall into place.

Wow, you have been busy! At least most of the activity has been good stuff :) It's also good to hear that you're getting back in the swing and getting yourself on track... heaven knows that's never easy when life is busy.

coming back soon!

Thursday, May 28, 2009

So, I haven't been on SP in almost a month! I want to say that I am very sorry to all of my spark friends for neglecting you. I have also taken a hiatus on dieting and exercise, but I will get back on that bandwagon very soon.

My grandma is still in the hospital, and it's been a rough go. Since she's been in there, she's suffered from a stroke and some heart failure, so between family coming and visiting her, my routine has been thrown for a loop.

Also, I am defending my thesis today! My defense is in 3 hours and 20 minutes, and I am feeling really good about it right now.

So, just an update, I will be back very soon and getting back on track. Thanks to those of you who thought of me when I was gone!

tired and stressed...

Monday, May 04, 2009

My grandma is still in the hospital. This weekend, she took a big turn for the worse, but today she seems a little better. For the past 4 or 5 days, someone had to be at the hospital for every meal or else she wouldn't eat anything, and since there is really only my mom and I around, I spent a lot of time there. Because of this, I am still battling with time trying to fit consistent workouts in. I have been still managing short ones everyday, but am missing the longer ones big time. Hopefully she will start eating on her own soon and we don't have to worry about being there so much. I can easily fit in workouts with 1 visit per day, but when it gets to be 2 or 3 visits per day, it's a little tough. Hopefully this week will be better. I have tried to keep a close eye on my calorie intake though, especially being less active. Well, back to work...

Thank you!

Thursday, April 30, 2009

I want to thank everyone here for their kind words and support over this last week! It's definitely been a tough one. My grandma is still in the hospital, but she seems to be improving. She just had another scan yesterday, so we should know for sure if she has any fractures tomorrow, so this is good! She is still very tired though. As for me, I'm doing fairly well. I haven't had tons of time, but I have fit in smaller workouts everyday, instead of less longer ones, and for now this is working. I've also done fairly well with my eating habits, although I haven't been tracking. Finally, my thesis is done and my committee members are currently reviewing it, so hopefully I will be defending soon! Yay!
