Nice Weekend

Monday, June 18, 2012

We had a very nice weekend.

Friday the kids were off doing their own thing. DH and I were going to go out but, eh, nothing sounded better than making healthy nachos and having drinks and nachos on the deck overlooking the lake. So that's what we did.

Saturday we went to a Ribfest. Honestly, the Ribfest was a bit of a disappointment but the tour of the brewery where it was held was interesting and, as hubby said, it was good to get to try 'professional' BBQ and realize that what he does at home is so much better. Sort of like how I don't much like to go out to restaurants anymore because it's so rare to have something as good as I can do at home. It wasn't a super active day but we did a lot of walking just to see all we saw.

I think DH had a good Father's Day. I encouraged him to pick what we did for the day and he wanted to go on a hike at Purgatory Chasm. We took a picnic (fruit, veggies, lean lunch meat and low fat cheese, bread, seltzer) and did the hike. It was a nice hike - shady and not too hot either.

I'm still waiting for my etextbook to activate for my course. Watched the first video 'lecture' (which had no textbook reading) but I'm stuck until that textbook is available. I compared the abridged etextbook with the full length textbook and decided to go ahead and buy the actual textbook as well. The info removed for the certification is not relevant to the certification but certainly of interest to me. It's starting to dawn on the kids that I'm really going to be doing 'schoolwork'. They haven't been part of any of the discussions - some of which occurred before either of them were born - so I guess it's sort of a shock to them that I even want to do anything more than take care of them. My MIL summed it up nicely saying that it's good for me to be looking ahead to my future as the kids get older. She gets it. She was a nurse who put her career on hold while she raised her boys. I can't easily return to my old career (and really have no desire to) but she can relate to the need to have something more than housekeeping to do.

In the meantime I've been watching The Weight of the Nation with my 'wellness committee' eyes on. I want to do right by the kids in town. I'm really trying to think about how they (and their parents) will respond to any changes we might make. If there's one thing I've learned on this journey is that those who are making changes have to feel like THEY made the CHOICE. No one likes to have things forced upon them in a way that feels like a punishment.

yay for a relaxing weekend w dh! I love that you're going back to school and looking forward to a time when you're you again and not just someone's mom. I feel that it's so important to remember who we are and it's so easy to lose ourselves in the hub bub of family life. The kids will get used to it, I'm sure. It can take some time to adjust to learning that mom is an actual person too lol. I also love that you're watching the weight of the nation. I've been passing around my copy like it's a new dessert. Most of the people who watch it tell me that it makes them feel depressed about their current lifestyle so I just remind them that one change at a time is all it takes to get to where you want to be and most of them have seen my struggle, both successes and failures so they know it's not going to be easy but it can be done. For your wellness committee I would come up with a list of ideas, discuss them with the group and encourage them to adopt whichever one they think they can and then come back with the results every week or so. it seems like a way to introduce new ideas in a way that allows them to participate and choose. I'm excited to hear howit goes. Keep up the great work!!

:) Sounds like a great time!

I love the feeling of something new and a bonus something of interest to you. I find that I am easily able and want to find answers and try to help. Nothing is worse than falling into a routine that helps no one.

So excited

Saturday, June 16, 2012

I bought my Nutrition Fitness Specialist course today. I am so excited! My etextbook won't be available to me for another 1-2 days and I am itching to get started. I haven't had reason to read a college textbook in over 15 years. I feel like I used to feel at the start of the semester :-)

Still not sure where this is leading.... but this is definitely a step ... towards something..... different.

Happy Dance :-)

I am so happy with how my body has reacted to my new training regimen and summer eating. I didn't stay at my lowest because I wasn't happy with my fat distribution. When I had to use up my training sessions with my trainer we developed a plan to shake up my fat distribution to, hopefully, lean out on my lower body. It's worked! I am back at lowest and love how it's happened.

4 pounds below goal. Shooting for 5 below by the time we leave on the cruise.

(Sooo close to buying the course to become a fitness nutrition specialist. Thinking of becoming a certified trainer as well but considering more intensive nutrition education and I haven't figured out whether I want to do the CPT on the way to the nutrition education or go straight to the nutrition program.)

Glad you are seeing the results you are after:)

After one particularly bad day at school I came home and ordered a nutrition cert. program as well as a strength training cert. I am about 1/2 way done with the questions for the nutrition cert. I found an online cite called AFPA. I read about it through of the healthy living blogs I read.

Great weekend, a busy week, and a weight/fitness update

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

We had a great weekend this weekend. Lots of family time, a few kid activities, some relaxation. The fitness highlight was going canoeing. I've never canoed. My kids have never been on a boat that isn't motorized (egads, how did we let that happen?) so they've never canoed either. DH had though so he had to teach us all. We paddled around a large reservoir and it was FUN. My daughter is dying to try a paddleboat now so I'm sure we'll do that soon. And they rent stand up paddle boards there which is something I REALLY, REALLY want to do so that will be happening this summer too. After canoeing we had a nice healthy picnic and my daughter fished until she caught a fish :-) This is how I want this family spending family time - out DOING things, not sitting around eating and drinking, not watching TV or movies or hanging out on line. I haven't gone so far as to resolve to do something every weekend but I'd really like to.

This week is just crazy with end of year meetings and activities. My days are open and routine but my afternoons and evenings - woo! - nuts. Just 5 1/2 more days of school though. I am so ready for summer! Just need to get through the rest of school!

Weight is A-OK. Right below my comfy spot and edging downward ever so slowly. That's just perfect as far as I'm concerned. I splurged and had pizza and beer Saturday, weight shot up, cleaned up a bit Sunday, went back to normal eating yesterday, and weight went right back down. Really happy that, with the return of grilling weather, eating well is just plain easy and that I seem to be able to splurge and recover in short order.

Fitness is A-OK, as well. I'm taking this whole week off from running to give my achilles a chance to recover. Haven't had a drop of pain since the last time I ran (a week ago). I'm enjoying subbing in the elliptical for a bit. It's easy and mindless but intense. This is my last week on the first set of workouts from my trainer. I need to type up the second set and set up a meeting with him to change up my lower body workout (or else just dig one up from somewhere.). Enjoying centergy very much. I have gotten flexible enough to do stick pose and lay right on my legs. That is freaky bizarre given where I started from and just the kind of thing that reminds me just how far I've come... and makes me smile.

I can't wait for school to be out too! As well as my kids! Looking forward to summer and a relaxed schedule for them.
Keep up the great work on the workouts and eating plan! Maintaining and edging down aren't easy!
Thanks for teh comment on my blog! I will check out that HBO episode!
Bummer to know I need to eat fewer calories than someone else my size.. but I've always thought my metabolism was slower anyway!

Do what you love so you love what you do.

Next week my daughter graduates from elementary school. As I know from my son's first 2 years in middle school, my time as a parent who volunteers in the schools so much that the students and parents wonder whether or not I am employed by the school district is drawing to a close. It's a time of transition for me as well as for them. I need to transition my focus to a new area. I've spent the last 2 school years (since my son moved on to middle school) focused on improving my own family's nutrition and I'm very proud to have made as much progress as I have. With a family now eating fairly nutritiously and living a more active life without much effort on my part that no longer takes nearly as much focus but I am still extremely interested in the topics of nutrition, fitness, and wellness. I am beginning to look at the options for updating my education (undergrad degree in microbiology, PhD in biology) to reflect these interests. At the beginning it will be for personal enrichment and to help transition to a new set of potential volunteer opportunities but there is potential for eventual employment or business opportunities. It's an exciting time.
