Was thinking about heading out to dinner last night. I now plan for restaurant visits, menu items, calorie counts, etc. and try to walk in with a Plan - so I don't accidentally get enticed to order something that is not supportive of my goals.

Problem was:
- I really didn't want the sides that would come with the fish I wanted... I know most restaurants will work with you.
- So I considered requesting a side salad instead and was willing to pay the "up charge" for the difference if necessary....

Then I figured - why pay a restaurant for two sides I won't eat, maybe an up charge for the side salad, with the hidden cost of the bread that I won't eat! Add the cost of the unsweetened iced tea - when I have a perfectly good filtered water pitcher in my fridge?

Instead, I went straight to the grocery store, got a fillet of the fish I wanted, came home and cooked it to my liking (and made the side salad w citrus vinaigrette I was in the mood for!).

So many people complain that healthy eating is expensive. Honestly, this is costing me less.

    I did the same thing tonight. I was running my daughter around her activities and it was past dinner time. I stopped for a kids meal for her and nothing for me. I had lots of veggies and cooked chicken in my fridge - come home and made a quick salad with my homemade dressing. emoticon

Dear Biscuits and Gravy -

Hey y'all - it's me! Sorry it's been so long since I've been in touch...

When I was younger, seeing you two was always a special treat whether on the holidays or one of Daddy's "Big Breakfasts" on a weekend morning (even though you were only one of many dishes those mornings). I know we haven't seen each other much over the past few years, and not at all for the last several months - even though "those restaurants" by the highway exits serve you all day, every day!

Biscuits - well I haven't seen you for several months now and perhaps you've figured out that I won't be coming back. You see, it's not you - it's me! I've made some personal changes with regard to the goals and priorities in my life. I no longer have room in my life for your processed white flour or hydrogenated oil, both of which are required for that addictive texture...

Gravy - I haven't seen you recently either. Hope you and biscuits are well. As I was just highlighting to Biscuits, the processed flour used in your roux, as well as the dairy used to complete your creamy texture, are no longer part of my diet. It's not that I don't want to be with you - I've just realized that our relationship wasn't healthy for me.

You see, I haven't singled you two out either, you were part of a broad sweeping decision to remove sugars and processed foods from my diet. Honestly, I'm not sure you would recognize me anyway... I have lost 35 lbs so far and will loose much more along this journey.

So in the future, if you happen to see a normal size, healthier woman who reminds you a little bit of me - who maybe stops and stares at you a little too long, please pretend you didn't notice me either...

I am confident that your place as a couple is forever weaved into the fabric of Appalachian life and Americana cookbooks throughout the south. Finally, while we won't be getting together any longer, please know you will always be tied to very fond childhood memories of family times spent together.

My memories of you will remain as Tender and Warming as a warm plate of Biscuits and Gravy - Wishing You Well, The granddaughter of Coal Miners (maternal and paternal), TampaTink!

  Yes...those "special" foods. Reminds me of Paula Deen. Relationships with foods & drink are a subject unto themselves. Thank you for writing this blog & reminding us about these relationships & how to "say good-bye." And then...how to welcome new foods into our lives. That was also a big one for me. I remember taking a list of healthy choices with me to the supermarket. Can you imagine? I needed a reminder list??

So, a Cave Woman walks into an Italian restaurant...

Yesterday was kinda funny! Had plans to meet up with friends for dinner, so I put on the pedometer in the morning and started knocking out the errands.

By the time we met up at an Italian Restaurant (um, I prefer to eat GF or LG at the very least!), I only had 5k steps done toward my goal of 10k.

For dinner I had tossed salad, lemon chicken, and a side a broccoli. They shared in the salad, ate two lg baskets of bread and had pasta.

I convinced them to head to the mall with me to complete my steps - done!

When the mall closed, they all wanted to head to a restaurant known for making desserts with cream cheese...... You got it! So off we went. They all got adult beverages, sugary coffee concoctions, and cheesecake! Guess they were on that insulin roller-coaster I got off of a few months ago!

What did I have? Well, I was full from eating real food at dinner, had just walked the last 5k, and had a club soda with orange and lime. I enjoyed my company and to their credit, they all at least packed half their cheesecakes to go - something they've never done before...

Next time we'll see if anyone is willing to join me clean eating/GF/Paleo and see how they feel later...

And it didn't involve Pixie Dust!

My hotel had a reception tonight that essentially equaled free dinner - the catch is it's whatever they cook. Tonight was a pasta buffet: garlic bread, linguini lightly sauced w tomato sauce, penne Alfredo, a pan of Bolongese (red meat sauce w lots of veggies), and a very small salad bar with maybe 6 items on it and two high calorie dressing options.

In the past - I'd have gladly had a fat and carb fest with the Alfredo pasta and garlic bread - and I must admit I was totally uninspired by the idea of a boring little dry salad for dinner. :(

Instead, tonight I thought about my personal goals and I thought about each of You...

You are my inspiration: those who have succeeded (and started where I am now), those who are just starting to figure out if Spark has something here that could help them, and those of you like me who are still finding our way down this newest path we are choosing for the rest of our lives and are grateful to have found a supportive community like Spark with people who can laugh, cry, but most of all problem solve with us. You may not even realize that you inspired me when I read one of your blogs where you were voicing a challenge I too face(d), or I read your words of inspiration to someone else and I was moved by your level of commitment / compassion, or perhaps I've tried one of your recipes - even if I modified it first...

So, what was dinner: about a cup of fresh spinach spread out over the bottom of my plate, topped by a half cup of fresh diced mushrooms, and the whole thing topped by off with a scoop of steaming hot Bolognese sauce. By the time I was seated with my water, the spinach had wilted to perfection, the mushroom has softened - and best of all, I didn't miss the bread or pasta.

I went for a walk this morning but only got in about 7,000 steps. So after dinner, I knew I still owed You something more. I've joined your team goals and need to pull my weight here too. So I got out and finished of my personal goal of 10k steps a day.

Good night Spark... Thanks to each of you for inspiring me that I too can acieve my personal goals. You are all appreciated more than you know.

    When eating at a conference buffet, I frequently use salsa or plain spagetti sauce to top my salad. Then I add a little balsamic vinegar and yum. Nice job.

  Good for you!!! I too, find it very hard to complete all my goals some days. I have been doing pretty good with eating healthier, but in-between my very busy schedule, sometimes I find my self avoiding my exercise because I can't possibly imagine mustering up the energy for a workout session. It is disheartening to see a great effort by way of my food journal, coming in second to the blank lines left in the space for my daily exercise . I am however, constantly uplifted and motivated by the people of Spark and the choices they make and more importantly the fact that they they keep going. I wake up every day knowing that I have another chance to make good choices and I get a motivational shot every time I log in to Spark and read stories from people like you.

    WOW! Way to go on the choices. I am starting Paleo, well I'm trying...I still can't seem to keep my carb intake lower than 30 but I'm working on it. What adds up as carbs in my diet is the heavy cream for coffee and veggies like a 1/2 cup baked sweet potato, or cheese. I have lost 6 pounds and am feeling great. I was SO EXCITED when I saw someone else here doing Paleo. I'm going to go read your spark page now. Congrats on making the best choice for you with all the other stuff staring you in the face. AMAZING!!

    Congrats! I did the same thing last night. Took the family to a Mexican restaurant and had Carne Asada. (Grilled steak!) My older son commented that I was the only one who didn't order an authentic Mexican dish. I told him I ate something I would be proud to add to my nutrition log, and it was one of the few things that wasn't fried or covered in sauces or condiments...

    Buffets are tough, and your's sounds like one of the toughest ones--few good choices--but you did so well, you made lemonade out of lemons!

I go to a Chinese Buffet with my son, it's his favorite restaurant. They have a Mongolian grill, and that's where I head, avoiding completely all the fried rice, and chicken and beef and pork offerings on the buffet line.

I get about half a cup of the noodles, and a little chicken, then pile the bowl up with veggies. LOTS and LOTS of veggies--mushrooms, broccoli, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, green peppers! Then when it comes to sauces, I totally avoid the oil sauces. I read somewhere they are the really high caloried ones. I don't know how many calories that heaping plate of veggies is, but I do know it's delicious. Hopefully it's not too bad calorie-wise. I've been eating it all during my weight loss journey, and it didn't seem to slow down my progress. Now I'm on maintenance, but still eat the same thing when we go there (we went today for lunch), and so far so good. I do know it's quite salty (must be the sauces), cause afterwards I'm quite thirsty, so I just drink lots and lots of water! If I gain a pound or two, it comes right off as soon as the water does its work!

So, we are proof that eating healthy even at the buffets can be done. Yea Us!!
