Giving "Fivefingers" to VA Beach... And a note on Pedometers!

Tuesday, December 06, 2011

Well, me and the Vibram Fivefingers have completed another 'barefoot" 10k step day investigating VA Beach (I don't leave until Friday - so please let me know if you have any suggestions on great places to walk or stroll while here...)

Per blog question - I have the Fivefinger Classics (solid black) and originally bought them for use at the airport/on the plane because I wear suits and heels to my meetings - but play Superman when I arrive at the airport for a trip home changing into jeans and flip-flops... But with the northern states getting a little too cold these days to show off the pedicure, these seemed like a fun and practical way to incorporate another part of the Paleo lifestyle into my daily routine.

I will admit that I find myself much more aware of my walking technique (thought I'd mastered that one many, many years ago!) and am totally enjoying the experience.

I really like the looks of the Vibram Jaya LR - almond/copper is too cute! If anyone has that style I'd love to hear Your thoughts on them before "investing" in another pair!

Final note on pedometers: As a curvatious woman, I have had problems with the cute little ones that clip onto your waistband - because as soon as I'd sit, it would fall off! And if you have experienced this asmwell - how about when it doesn't count your steps because based on where you've clipped it - it isn't at the correct angle with the ground - Grrrr! (I'm not exactly a fan of exercise - so if I'm gonna do the work and track it, I want to get an accurate read!). My answer for this was a three axis pedometer I wear on a long pretty necklace. I'm using one from Tanita, but search the web - there are other companies that make them too. It's great! I'm getting accurate measurements, no risk of it falling off, and it's discrete enough to even wear with/under work clothes!

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for the tip about the pedometers. I thought they would be expensive, but when I checked out the site that you mentioned, I found they were about the same price as the regular pedometers. Thanks!

Sounds like you're having a great time and I couldn't think of a better place to walk than the beach!

I have a watch with a pedometer that I really like.

What happens when a cave woman has PMS?

Monday, December 05, 2011

This month is hitting harder than last - following was the craving buster I used following a protein and veggie dinner that just wasn't hitting the spot:

Small dish of blackberries - single layer (1/3 c)...
Schmear 2 T full fat Greek yogurt over top of them - spreads like ricotta...
Ever so lightly drizzle 1/2 t local honey on top - just to take the edge off the yogurt. And for someone who has abandoned almost all natural and artificial sweeteners - it does not take much at all! Enjoy!

I know... Some will say this isn't a true Paleo snack - but if this kept me from calling the Hut to order a deepdish delivery, or heading out for a wrb burger with unlimited fries.... then I will find a way to forgive myself!

I may try something like this but with coconut milk since I'm allergic to dairy. And you're right, it sure beats a number of alternatives.

Who can afford to buy a new wardrobe at each size while loosing weight? Here's my secret....

Sunday, December 04, 2011

Spent time today power shopping, I mean power walking....!

Have a great outside mall near buy and spent time checking out the clearance rack in almost every store. Had a Paleo lunch, got my hair cut and highlighted, and baby got a new pair of boots!

While it was fun trying on clothes from the clearance rack and fitting into smaller sizes, I realize how quickly I've taken off the first 30, how quickly my size is changing and that I'm not done!

I work in a conservative industry (need to wear business professional clothes), but am not in an office regularly. So my clothes strategy through this winter is as follows:
- I found 4 beautiful long skirts in interesting fabrics/patterns with - ready... Elastic waists! I bought them as small as possible for now and know they will not only fit well through many pounds if weight loss, but can be easily altered at the dry cleaners this winter if necessary.
- Next, I purchased knit 'shells' in solids referencing one of the colors from the skirt I wanted to highlight (Taupe, brick red, turquoise, and two basic blacks).
- All of the skirts have black in them, so the only piece I'll need to keep purchasing is a beautifully tailored black suit jacket.
- Finally, I bought a fabulous pair of black boots that will look stunning under the skirts!

Put it all under a dress/trench coat and all you might need are scarf, gloves, and umbrella and your ready for anything your business or mother nature might through at you!

So that's my secret to saving

    Oooh, nice job!
My secret? Giving away the clothes that were too big, and fitting back into some of my smaller sizes I kept when I gained weight some years ago. Unfortunately not everything is still stylish, but I've re-incorporated 2 key pieces! lmao

I love going shopping, I don't like paying lots of money... so Sally Ann, Value Village all do it for me.

Love your ideas! Sounds like a great wardrobe you have and have planned for the contingency should your weight (I mean, when you weight) change...WooHoo! emoticon

Gotta agree with the Goodwill nod. During my first weight-loss spree, I was changing pants sizes every month. I was able to find lined wool trousers and silk blouses at our Goodwill for $3.50 apiece, including one pair from Talbot's with the $57.00 price tag still on! And at the end of the month, I'd donate back the size I'd just shrunk out of and go buy more.

Goodwill also offers great clothes that are cheap too.

Fivefinger Shoes - first day...

Saturday, December 03, 2011

I'd read all the posts warning to start slow with these new shoes - give your body time to adjust.

Well, I'm one of those people who would rather be barefoot all the time - given the opportunity, the shoes are off (even though those who know me would say I obviously love shoes!)

I spent about 3.5 hours in the mall yesterday and feel great today - looking forward to my next walk in about 1.5 hours.

Have a productive day!

I have vibrams and walk in them all the time. But if you decide to start training in them and have ever had issues with anything like shin splits or weak ankles, I would suggest starting slow and training a few days a week in them versus going all out.

Sweet! Which ones do you have? I can't wait to use mine again - I'm away at school and forgot to bring them. I just have the plain black KSO's.
