Maybe I need a new scale???

Friday, March 09, 2012

Got up in the middle of the night. Before heading back to bed, I stopped by the scale - Whoa! Fabulous number... I stepped off and back on again - exact same number! Stupid crazy - what the heck did I do or not do this week... I need to repeat it! (Actually thought about logging on to Spark to celebrate - but decided sleep was better idea!)

This morning - NINE lbs higher!

Hmm.... Honestly, the AM reading was the expected number so, continuing to implement the plan!

emoticon It's all good...!

Maybe I need new batteries!!!

Oh no! My dh decided my scale needed a new battery, but instead he broke it. I was up 17 lbs. the day off his "helping" so now I have no scale....

Strange! I know that there are fluctuations, but 9 lbs? But glad that you are where you want to be regardless of the crazy scale!

Odd thought - how much temperature difference was there between midnight and when you got up? Analog scales, as I recall, can have a bit of variance when they are cold compared to when they are warm. Batteries, as others have mentioned, can also cause off readings as they wear down.

And then there is the one thing I've done before - dreamed about a completely ordinary event such that I wake up feeling convinced it happened, but later evidence makes me less certain.

Whatever it was, you'll get to see that lower number soon enough and then it will be the high you don't want to see again.

I am always moving my scales around to the low gravity spot on the floor. And I find that I weigh less after my shower, who knew that the dirt you pick up while you are in bed asleep could weigh so very much?

Mine went down by 3lbs the other day when I moved it to another spot on the tile floor. So, sadly, I'm still weighing myself half-way into the closet for consistency! Glad you figured out the battery issue. It would have been really bad if it had gone UP by that much in a false reading!!!

Good luck!

In my humble opinion, the scale is only ONE REFLECTION of success. Your measurements are imho another example; PLUS how you feel in general is VERY IMPORTANT.

Maybe it's just me; but by getting on the scale at the same time albeit every day or once a week is important. Just keep your focus. You're doing a-okay.

Our scale sometimes adds 5 lbs or doesn't zero out we think. Have changed the batteries, but it seems every now and then to have a mind of its own.

Mine does that sometimes and I step off of it and then step right back on and then I get a more accurate reading. Good luck!

Oh yeah... Insulin AND Cortisol!

Sunday, March 04, 2012

Weight Gain is a piece of cake (literally!); but weight loss seems to be a lot more than just skipping that cake...

This past month I've been at a weight loss "plateau" (meaning no weight loss because I'm off my game!) - I've lost more inches (so I know I'm still being effective at changing my body composition); but with me still being in the obese category, maintain weight is not really my health goal!

Seeking first to understand - I had to analyze/diagnose what has been different:

DIET - for two weeks of the past four weeks, I've been locked in a hotel w buffet lines for 3 meals a day (unless we were scheduled for a Forced Fun Function - dinner out at high end restaurant as groups).  The Good:  The hotels were very accommodating (hard boiled eggs for breakfast on request, and by the end of the week we even had vegetables at breakfast - tomatoes & onions one day and asparagus another).  The Bad:  I ate three squares a day with snacks at "appointed" times.  So while I managed to stay Paleo (to the best of my knowledge!):  1) when at home, I only eat when hungry now, and it may not be at a "set" time and it's certainly not 3 squares plus fruit or nuts when on "break", and 2) I'm sure the proteins weren't as high a quality as I normally have available, and without access to the kitchen/recipes, I'm sure some of the foods had sugars, soy, and a lot more sodium than I would have ever consumed at home - maybe next meeting I'll try dropping the meats and only do sugar free, wheat free, and soy free veggies with eggs, fish, or plain grilled chicken.

EXERCISE - while the first week at the hotel was less consistent, I did manage to get the 10k steps a day while home and the second week at the hotel.  consistency could be better - but it wasn't horrible either...

STRESS - not just Insulin - oh Cortisol...... this was probably the biggest part of the equation I haven't had in my cross hairs!  The last day of February saw the end to some "personal issues" I've been dealing with since the beginning of November.  The "business" stressors have been high for the last two months, but with the personal issues coming to a solid conclusion, I'm literally better able to address one of the biggest business stressors, AND I posted for two new jobs within my current company last week.  So now I'll have the added stress of prep, interviews, and either getting or not getting a new job!!!

Given the analysis above:  I'm getting back to basics for March! - attempting to manage both insulin and cortisol - here's my March Rx:

DIET:  prep foods; eat only when hungry; high quality SANE, Paleo foods.
EXERCISE:  10k steps a day; weight based exercises; stretching post every workout
STRESS:  can't eliminate it, so I'll have to try to manage it!
     1) 7-8 hrs of sleep/night, and
    2) daily multi-vitamin; Omega 3s, and extra vitamins C.

Sounds like you've really considered the possibilities and tried to minimize the "cortisol producers" as much as possible... Something's gotta give. Good luck on new job... does it involve less travel? emoticon

That is great that you have all your goals/issues identified. I don't have to go to hotels etc but I know the same buffet type problem with church on Sundays - we do a pot luck each Sunday and gosh it is hard to pick anything healthy so I try to pick portion control in that case. And life does get in the way sometimes of that exercise! But yup - insulin and cortisol are the biggest problems! My doc said the same thing. Unfortunately for me it got so bad I ended up on anti-depressants and I admit I am feeling great. The stress never goes away no matter how much you try to manage it and my doc says the issue of diabetes and insulin alone are enough reason to cause people stress. Not usually an advocate of anti-depressants or whatever but for me I think it has really helped because I do get upset every time I see those numbers up and yet I did everything I could. Good luck to you - Identifying problem areas has got to be the right path to success!

Leaving tomorrow for another hotel week...

Sunday, February 26, 2012

My personal challenge:

I know I can survive the food issue(s) and continue to eat correctly - the challenge will be ensuring I get the 10,000 steps in each day - and no one can do that but me!

Just do it!

I adore hotel fitness centers! Variety is wonderful and you can do what you're used to and experiment with whatever they have that you're not used to. (I found a pre-cor stretching machine at a hotel - wish we had one in our exercise room in our building.) Some hotels have a fitness kit you can take to the room (Hilton Garden Inns) - probably others, too. The 10,000 steps may have to be on the treadmill - but that's okay. Not only you can do it - but you can finish the week ahead of where you started it! Stay positive, and may God bless your success on this journey we all share. emoticon emoticon

Great challenge. Hotel/travel is always a little trickier. Last month when I stayed in Orlando, we got a room on the 5th floor and took the stairs up and down - you may not get all your steps that way, but it is certainly a workout! Good luck!

Good day...

16000 steps (7 miles total) yesterday!

Okay - this was after adding body weight exercises the night before. At 5k steps, my legs were screaming - so I went for breakfast. When I got up from the table, my legs were so stiff and sore, I know it was impacting my gate ad I hobbled to the car! I stretched a little and all was good - able to finish 10k and the rest was mall walking w a friend last night. I remembered to stretch immediately after finishing the 10000 steps and the mall walk!

It's seriously awesome to move so mush and end up with sore muscles vs sore feet or joints...
