Buffet Gauntlet

Thursday, February 16, 2012

I survived! WooHoo!!!!

I'll see what the scale says this weekend... But I made good food choices, not as much walking as I would have preferred, and portions were probably larger than if I was at home with a food scale.

Other successes: no dessert, no alcohol, no bread/grains...

All in all, it was a solid week. I'll be okay of I've gained some, good if even for the week, and thrilled if I lost!!!

Sounds like you did really well - no alcohol, no desserts, no breads/grains. That's where many of the calories lurk, so...hope you have a really good positive upbeat weigh-in, whatever that thing with numbers says! emoticon

The Weekend before Valentines Day....

Sunday, February 12, 2012

Okay - so I forgot last night was the closest "Saturday" to Valentines Day...

- the malls were swamped
- the restaurants were at a 65-75 minute wait
- and I wanted to see the movie Safe House (opened this weekend), and by the time I checked, the next two shows were sold out (favorite theater) and I had to settle for the 1020p show.... Needless to say, it was a stressful day and a very late night.

So as for today... It was a really low energy day: legs felt like jello, I was cold all day, and had no real appetite. I switched up the diet and had fruit with my protein for brunch (to try to get a boost), and then later forced myself to head out for a shrimp/avocado ceviche salad as an early dinner to balance healthy fats and push veggies.

So for now, I'm curled up in bed with the cats, the Alarm is set for early AM travel, and I'm hoping sleep comes early tonight.

In case I don't get a chance to post again until later in the week, I wish each of you a beautiful Valentines Day!

Sounds like you needed to get a lot of rest. Good job on getting in to bed early - cats are always fun to snuggle with, when they want to snuggle that is.

Hubby and I went out to eat at our favorite restaurant on Friday lunchtime for an early Valentine's Day celebration. We hate to deal with the crush at restaurants, etc and I wouldn't even have thought about it being that busy this Saturday night.

How was the movie? It looks pretty good.

Good travels to you and have a good week.

More "practice" for next week....

Saturday, February 11, 2012

Very busy with work yesterday - prepping for that meeting next week...

Once the work day was done, I went out to help a friend put a room back together that had new carpet installed that day...  Then we went out to Ruby Tuesdays - there isn't one close to my house, so I finally got to try the Spaghetti Squash Marinara w Zucchini.  (Seriously Incredible!  Tastes fabulous, spicy kick to sauce, and calorie conscious!)

And guess what it comes with... there, at the other end of the restaurant, a BUFFET salad bar - with all the mayo covered starches and high calorie salad dressings and toppings that got me to SparkPeople in the first place...

Hmm, oh well. Face the demon - I just considered it a dry run for the buffet gauntlet I'll be facing next week!

Here's what I got:  spring mix, cucumber, shredded carrots, peas, hard boiled egg, and a sprinkle of sunflower seeds - topped w a sprinkle of balsamic vinegar (not dressing)....... I loved my salad and barely finished half my entree - so guess what I'll be having for lunch today!

Only achieved 6k stps today - but still feel good about it since I had the added workout of setting up the room - guess I'll say that was "heavy lifting"...  Not!

Good for you! I know their salad bar, can be really tempting, but they also have a lot of really healthy options there, too, so I give them credit for that. I haven't been there since they added the spaghetti squash, that sounds great. As a vegetarian, it would be a great option for me.

History repeats itself...

Friday, February 10, 2012

That means we can learn from the successes and mistakes of others.  Right? Isn't that one of the things that makes SparkPeople such a valuable resource?  I'm not the first person to hit a weight loss plateau, try a diet, want to become a runner or train for distance.......

But sometimes...  We just have to "learn" for ourselves!  Because you might have an idea about how to tweak "that thing" a little differently that Might make it work for you!  And after all, we are all different, so IT might work for Me... Besides, if you never fail, you're not trying hard enough / taking enough risks! Right?

But You also have another responsibility - your personal education:

If you don't take the time to learn from failures / your mistakes, and plan for a different outcome next time...  History repeats itself.

So please recognize every "Failure" as an opportunity to advance in your education... Invest the time to understand why things didn't work, and to plan for future successes!

Failure is part of life; not learning from it is a real waste.

You are very wise and I appreciate you reminding me to look at things with an analytical point of view instead of a discouragement point of view. It is a good thing for us to try to learn a new way rather than letting history repeat itself!

Very well spoken, I would have to agree. We use this idea in other aspects in our lives, but fall short when it come to diet failure.

I was thinking yesterday that the difference between being able to keep weight off and gaining it all back is knowing how to learn from setbacks that you have and act on what you learned.

Reminds me of a couple quotes I've seen - I think one was based on something said by Thomas Edison:

== There are no failures; just learning experiences. ==

== I did not fail. I simply discovered 900 (or some number) ways that do not work. ==

In fact, looking up the Edison one, I found this little anecdote - who knows how much is manufactured and what was really say, but it makes the point:

======================
The story of his apparent failures are legendary – it is said that he failed 9,999 times before he succeeded in inventing the light bulb on his 10,000th attempt. The story goes that he and his assistant were working on the light bulb when Edison did something that caused an explosion. Edison and his assistant were thrown backwards and glass smashed everywhere. Edison’s assistant was frightened witless, yet Edison got up, calmly dusted himself off and started writing in his journal. The assistant was incredulous and started yelling at Edison. “Are you crazy? Can’t you see you nearly killed us – why do you keep trying when you just failed…. AGAIN?” Edison, again calmly, looked up and replied, “I have not failed. I have simply discovered the 9,999th way not to invent a light bulb. However, I have also found a way of making an explosion and I better write it down before I forget.”

Agreed! Failure doesn't mean total, utter and complete...not unless you let it. If we fail - many times and learn from each time....its a tool, like any other.

Such a good reminder - thank you. Failure can be so uncomfortable that it can be tempting to close my eyes and dive into a bowl of something, to distract myself from the feelings of embarrassment and disappointment. Part of becoming healthier (and less insulated, literally) is to sit still and stare at the disappointment directly until it no longer has the power to make me squirm. I often remind others - take the lesson from the failure, and leave the rest behind. When I take my own advice, I move forward - when I don't, the lesson keeps coming around and I spend too much energy repeating the same mistakes. Keeping this in mind, I will be off to track my food despite the fact that I have eaten some unnecessary items in an attempt to feel less tired (fail). I can ((A) track my way back on track, or I can (B)figure "oh, well, I've blown it for today". I am going with option A - thanks for inspiring me. emoticon

the problem with weightloss is that we expect what works once will work the same later...but everything changes...
our bodies adapt to lower calories
our metabolism changes
our bodies get bored with the same exercise and stop losing
our eyes fool us and the portion sizes 'magically' get bigger
our bodies get lighter (if we're lucky) and demand we work harder the closer we are to goals
and our brains give us the inner child that never grows up and constantly finds new things to complain about

I, too, adore this quote and always appreciate seeing it. It is a good one to have printed on a workout shirt. I stopped by to thank you for reading my "hypocrite?" blog - I really appreciated all your comments. Here is another quote for you, as relates to addiction, and which you have probably heard a thousand times "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results." So, I did NOT bring her sugar, I do NOT care that she is annoyed (indeed, I fully expected it) and I do care that I have a clear conscience. She, by the way, had lots of junk food and soda around so someone is bringing it but it sure isn't me! So, go lap those couch dwellers and I will, too!
