We are finally getting to go on vacation next week!! We were pretty much trapped here all summer because of Reiko working ridiculously long hours and her kidney stones. Now we finally get to get away. We're going to the coast and we're hitting up Corpus, Port A, and then S. Padre. We'll be gone almost a week and I can't wait!!
I promised myself I would get in some exercise while I was there and I've got a plan in place. I know that two of the hotels we're staying at have a gym, so that is definitely an option. But I should take advantage of being at the beach and get outside and get some fresh air. So, I'm thinking some brisk walks up and down the coast are in order. Plus. I have my laptop which means I can also do some of the downloaded videos I have or take a DVD or two with me.
As you can see the problem is not lack of equipment, opportunity, space, etc. The problem is motivation, will, drive, and determination! I say the same thing every time we go on vacation, no matter where we go. "This time is going to be different. I'm going to go to the gym. I'm going to go for a walk. I'll take my resistance bands with me for some ST, etc." And you know what? It NEVER happens. We get to where we're going and I start to tell myself I'm on vacation and I should enjoy it. I can workout when I get back. This is my time to have fun and relax.
My other problem is of course food. I love going to the coast and sipping fruity island drinks with oranges and cherries for garnish, eating lots of fried seafood, telling myself that it's ok because we're on vacation. You're supposed to throw caution to the wind and enjoy yourself. Going into calorie overload isn't that big of a deal because I'll get back on track as soon as we get back to town. Well I've gotten on and off the track so much this year my boarding pass is falling apart.
There's nothing wrong with starting over, but I do feel I've taken it to the extreme. I feel if I could just have one vacation where I did the right thing most of the time and only allowed myself a few splurges, I'd be able to do it all the time. I'd see I could still have fun and enjoy myself without feeling "deprived".
I've talked to Reiko about what I want to do and she backs me 100% She's an early riser anyway so she's all about going down to the beach for a walk in the morning. I know I can do this, I just have to DO it! Wish me luck folks!

So I decided that I want to start challenging myself to do at least one different workout a week to branch out of my comfort zone and spice up my routine. Well that was like a month ago and nothing has changed, so what better to way to make my desires happen then to share it with you guys and make myself accountable?!?!
I follow lots of different healthy living blogs for workout and nutrition inspiration. One of them, The Sweaty Betties, posted this metabolic workout months ago, but I hadn't gotten around to trying it yet.
So I decided I would give it a try today. Let me just say, it's by far one of the hardest things I've ever done. It "sounds" easy, but in reality you're doing so much right from the beginning, by the time you get to the end you're spent.
So here's the lowdown:
1) It's a 50, 40, 30,20, 10 metabolic workout that uses your own body weight.
2) You do squats, plank straddles, and falling push ups (Do 50 squats, then 50 plank straddles , and finally 50 falling push ups, then repeat doing sets of 40, 30, 20, 10.)
3) There's no time limit, you can take breaks as needed, but try to make your rest periods as short as possible. Go at your own pace.
4) You need nothing more than a yoga mat for cushioning.
The squats were the easy part for me, as I knew they would be. But if you hate squats I could see this being pure torture for you (You could probably do lunges instead). Surprisingly, it was the falling push ups that kicked my butt. After sets 50 and 40, my wrists started to hurt so for sets 30, 20, and 10 I did regular push ups. I was even trying to be extra careful so I wouldn't hurt myself. If you have any type of joint issue I would not recommend this workout. Even the plank straddles, since you're jumping back and forth, is hard on the wrists and the shoulders. I completed the workout in 27:14 and I burned a little under 400 calories. I also took LOTS of breaks. Somewhere in the middle of set 40 I contemplated quitting because I had obviously lost my mind to think I could do this, but after giving myself a mental slap to get it together, I just pushed through. So I feel great for completing it in under 30 minutes although I honestly thought my time would be way less than that.
Do the workout, if you dare, then share your time and thoughts with me. Check back next Tuesday for a new video challenge!

It has been an interesting week to say the least. I worked really hard to stay on track with my eating and that's been relatively easy thanks to the September Freggie Challenge we have going on over at the San Antonio Team! This challenge has really made me notice that yes, I was eating fruits and veggies before, but I was definitely not eating anywhere near 5 servings a day. I really thought I was doing good if I had a peach or berries with breakfast and some veggies at dinner. This challenge has really helped me to start eating several small meals throughout the day because I'm constantly trying to get in another fruit and/or veggie! This challenge has also helped me be more creative and try new things with my cooking.
I took Gerty on another walk this morning. She was a good girl and sat at every corner before we crossed the street. She didn't need to take any breaks this time either, but that might have also been a benefit of the cooler weather. It was almost a little chilly when we set out this morning! I'm so happy Fall is here! I can't handle these Texas summers. The heat is nothing less than oppressive!
Now I did only get in two workout this week, but that's two more than what I had been doing. Gerty is pretty much refusing to potty train so I spend ALL DAY walking up and down two flights of stairs to take her to go potty. She has absolutely no concept of why we're going outside. I take her to the little dog park in our apartment complex and she smells around, but never does anything. We stay out there for 30 minutes while I encourage her to go potty, but she eventually just lays down because she doesn't understand what's going on! I've even tried walking her around the apartment complex, but nope. Nothing. So I may not be tracking actual workouts, but I am still being way more physically active than i was before. I should count the stairs and start tracking how many times I go up and down!
Every little bit counts. I will keep pushing through and I will never give up!

I'm sorry. That blog title is very misleading! No, I'm not pregnant :( I got a puppy! I adopted this sweet little girl from the Animal Defense League yesterday!
They had named her Gertrude, which is quite unbecoming for a girl as cute as this, so I started calling her Gerty (temporarily), but it grew on me. Gerty is a 7 month old Moutain Cur/Terrier mix. She's super sweet and quite smart. She already knows how to sit! I got Gerty for several reasons, one of them being I wanted a walking partner.
I put Gerty to the test this morning and we went for a 2.53 mile walk. I have to say, I'm pretty impressed. She walks well on the leash, but she does pull a little bit so we'll need to practice our manners a lot before we hit up the trailhead. Being that she's only 7 months old, she did get a little tired and wanted to flop her puppy butt down every chance she got, but she'll build up stamina and endurance as she gets older!
I'm really glad I saved this precious little girl, she was having trouble getting adopted because she's black, despite that adorable and loving face and those floppy ears!

If you've read my last couple of blogs, then you know I've been struggling to get back on track with my exercise. Before today I hadn't exercised in over a month. Closer to two? Maybe. It's been so long I don't even remember. I have been staying on track with my eating the majority of the time which is the reason I haven't experience any weight gain, thank God! But I want to loose weight, not maintain! So I knew I had to do something to start the ball rolling again. I've been trying to start that ball rolling for a while now. Today I was victorious!!
I told myself I was going to work out and told myself I was serious this time. To make sure my subconscious was aware of just how serious I was, I told MJSHEBEAST to "make me" work out today!! And then things got really serious! I put my workout clothes on. That's one of my favorite go-to tricks to motivate me to exercise...and it worked. I told myself all I had to do was a 10-min upper body ST video and then I could stop if I wanted to. It would at least be a step in the right direction. But I ended up doing that video twice and then doing a lower body toning video as well. All in all I got in 40 min of exercise today!!
We are still training for the 13.1 which is set to take place early next year and I haven't been walking in forever. So I hope, pray, plan to get up early and go walking tomorrow. Luckily, there is supposed to be a cold front coming our way so if I get up early enough I can enjoy temps anywhere from 77-81 degrees. That's music to my ears!!
So as you can see no Sept goals. And that's because my only goal is to take this one day at a time. I worked out today, check! Tomorrow's goal, go walking or get in some other form of exercise, but I'd prefer it be walking!! Baby steps, little tiny baby steps.
