yes i know i am a bit blog crazy lately...

Tuesday, May 06, 2008

i was so happy about my race on sunday and then most of yesterday. i was proud of my result and felt i did the best i could do.

then yesterday that all changed. first i got wind that an 80 year old lady from our city got the world record for her age group in the half marathon. i know this is amazing and good for her but her time was 2:03. she kicked my butt by 1 minute. not sure why this was bugging me so much.

then i started looking at times of my running clinic members. most were predictable, a couple were a bit slow but this one girl who i consider a "lazy" runner finished 4 mins faster than me. by "lazy" i mean i have never seen her push herself ever. when we do hills or track intervals she was always way to the back of the pack. even on our long runs she went with the slower runners. i don't know why it is bugging me so much. i will never probably see her again!!!

i also was looking at some pictures of me from the race. i actually like a couple of them. however, i need someone to film me run. i dont' think i lift my knees ever. i guess i am saving energy lol.

so i probably just have way too much time on my hands to think things since my legs are so wobbly still i can't do much more than ride a bike.

so looking at the positives here.....

i started running in october 2007! in the last 8 months i went from being able to run 1 mile at a 10min mile pace to running a half marathon at a 9:30 pace and being able to run a mile in 7:45. i have ran in a 10 km, a 15km, and 2 half marathons.

i am a beginner runner and this is what i have already accomplished. i need to think of what i will accomplish in the future if i keep working at it and what i have accomplished already is more than most people set out to do in their lifetime in regards to running.

Dang your pain body wants to grow. Stop listening to the negative messages playing in your head...they are NOT real. You are successful so stop fighting it.

You should be really happy with your time, but I completely understand how you're feeling. It's so hard not to compare. I'm constantly over analyzing my race times and comparing them to others. In one of my races there was this incredibly over weight (we're talking 9 months pregnant) middle aged man that blew by me. That didn't feel too great for the old self esteem.

The positives that you've listed are amazing and you're right that you will accomplish so much more in your running career. You've made amazing progress and it can only get better the more you run.

If it makes you feel better, I got beat in a 5k once by a 9 year-old. She was wearing a pink puffy winter coat with her pink mittens dangling from her sleeves (tied together on a string). She finished 2 people ahead of me. The person right ahead of me? An older man who must have been in his 70s.

I know it's easier said than done, but for us non-elites, we're really best off racing ourselves. You did an awesome job and you'll continue to see great results in the future from your hard training.

Just the fact that you ran a half marathon is an accomplishment to me. I wouldn't compare what others did, just next time, beat your prevuious time and just keep beating yourself. That's all that matters...and have fun doing it.

I've been blogging like crazy too! I can tell you that to me, you are one of those people that makes me feel slow and unworthy. It's all relative. You have a lot to be proud of!

Oh that is fabulous! I did my 2nd half for St. Patty's day and did 2:30:31, so I'm kinda saying 2:30. There was a big article in runner's world about how to describe your time especially if you have a goal. Mine was 2;30 or under.
I do seem to be running faster though since I am not running as much. Like I'm doing a 10:30 to 10:50 mile compared to 11:30 or something.
I would love to have a 2:05 though
Congrats emoticon

So I have completed my 2nd half! yeah me!

Sunday, May 04, 2008

i got up at 515 this morning to eat and get ready to go downtown. dh didn't get much work this week so he decided to try to go get work. my dad drove me down and hung out with me until the race started. thanks daddy! i should also add that my dad has been a runner his whole life and i have many pictures of him from running this very marathon. maybe next year i will do the full race.

any way...

the weather was pretty much perfect today. a little warmer than i am used to and partly cloudy. the race began at 7am and about 7000 half marathon runners took off.

i should say if you are not from vancouver the 1st 1/4 of the race goes pretty much through the worse area of our city. heck, it is one of the worst areas in north america. my dad told me that they actually spray down the roads the night before (to get rid of the needles and condoms - yuck). i should add i ran quickly through this part of the race. heck, i ran too quickly. i kept looking at my garmin and seeing a sub 9 min mile which means i am going way to fast. at the first water station i decided to go to the porta potty as i felt i had to pee and didn't want to deal with that for the next 1.5 hours. so on i went. we go then from the worst part of the city into the most expensive and then on to our gorgeous stanley park (which is about 10 km of the race). at the 10 km mark my garmin was reading 58 mins... way too fast for me and at the half way mark it was reading 61. i then thought i could run a sub 2:00 if i kept this up however i, i mean my body, started telling me it was too fast. i started to slow and was taking more water breaks. at that point i was doing about a 9:15 pace.

at around mile 7.5 we hit "the hill." it is pretty much 200' straight up. it is kinda a cheeky hill because you think it is about to flatten out and then you go around a curve and it kept climbing. i am very proud to say i didn't slow down to walk and ran the whole thing. the hill was about a mile and from there i was in the home stretch. as usually, as soon as i get over about 10 miles my core starts to tighten up. i am still not sure if this is a muscle issue or a hydration issue. i pushed on. as i reached the corner of denman/beach there was a huge crowd and it was really overwhelming. i almost burst into tears several times.

on to the finishing stretch. lots of "fans" around and music and everyone was picking it up again and i joined in. at the 11 mile mark i took a short walk break so i could get in some water and finish strong. when i crossed the finish line it said 2:06 and my garmin read 2:04 and 13.2 miles so I am guessing my official time will be 2:05. hoping for a 2:04:59 - lol!

i am very proud of that time as it is 4 minutes faster than my 2:09 from my half in February.

thanks to everyone for your support.

Awesome race, Jen! I know that 'cheeky' hill you speak of. I totally remember thinking it should be just about over then turning the corner on the next switch back only to see more uphill. Ugh! Way to push yourself and stay strong. And, Woo hoo!!! Great time. You did great!

song for me

Saturday, May 03, 2008

great uplifting lyrics. most songs are about how others affect you and you hoping others affect you but this one is about how you affect you!

natasha bedingfield - unwritten

I am unwritten, can't read my mind, I'm undefined
I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
To
day is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Oh, oh, oh

I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines
We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin

No one else, no one else

Oh, yeah, yeah
