Grindstone Trail

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

I headed to Pilot Mountain yesterday after work and decided to hike up the Grindstone Trail since I haven't done this one in several months. I parked in the campground and started the uphill hike. It's about 4.25 miles to the top and back. I had almost forgotten how rocky this trail is, but it was a great day as the humidity was a lot lower than it has been the last few weeks and also not as hot. The bugs were still pretty bad, but that's just part of hiking in the summer. It was a great hike and the picture is one I took at the top of the mountain. My next hike won't be until Friday because I have to work at the spa the next 3 nights. Thanks to all of you for your comments!

Gorgeous! Great picture too. Bugs are part of summer hiking...an unfortunate, but necessary evil. Glad to see you're getting some nice hikes in.

Take care,

Carol

I had to work at the spa yesterday morning doing massage, and after I got off, instead of going for the hike I planned, I went home to help DH cut up and clean up debris from a tree that fell during a storm last week. I should have hiked because it would have been a lot easier and a lot more enjoyable. Anyway, I did get to hike some today. DH and I got in 4 miles at Pilot Mountain in spite of the heat and humidity. I keep hoping that the weather will improve at least a little, but I'll keep at it regardless of the temps and humidity.

At least you did some sort of cardio even if it wasn't the funnest. Today was a pretty nice day here and not humid at all. Have a great week!

Finally, an evening without a storm.

Friday, July 11, 2008

Didn't get to hike Wednesday or yesterday. We had a terrible storm on Wednesday evening that brought down a large tree in our backyard (the cleanup begins tomorrow) and had to do massages at the spa last night. Today, we finally had a day with no rain!! I got off work about 3:30 today, so I changed clothes and headed to Pilot Mountain for a hike. It was really hot today and the humidity was almost unbearable, so I decided to start at the bottom of the mountain and take the Mountain Trail up as far as I could and then return back down. It was nice to get out hiking, even though all the recent rain has brought the flying bugs out in huge numbers and has produced a fine crop of poison ivy for the first few hundred feet of the trail. I carefully worked my way through the growth and then headed up the mountain. I hiked about 1.5 miles up before deciding to turn around to get back in town in time to meet DH for dinner. It was only 3 miles today, but something is better then nothing. I'll have more time to hike the next two days.

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments. The encouragement truly helps.

Stormy Hiking

Wednesday, July 09, 2008

Well, I'm trying to get my mountain miles in, but mother nature is not exactly cooperating. DH and I headed for Pilot Mountain yesterday after work, but by the time we got to the trailhead it was pouring rain and thundering and lightening. I can deal with the rain, but not the lightening. We waited it out for a while until the rain eased up and we could no longer hear thunder and set out on the trail. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before we could hear a new round of thunder approaching. So, it wasn't a very long hike (1 mile), but I sure got my heart rate up because I was trying to hurry back to the car. I'm hoping the weather will be better this evening when I get off work, but they're calling for storms every evening this week. Looks like I'll be doing a lot of hiking this weekend to catch up.

It's too bad you had to call off your hike. I bet it was pretty out there though, with all the wetness.

My Hiking Challenge for July

Monday, July 07, 2008

I recently read a blog from another SP member who set a personal challenge for the month of June. It was interesting reading her entries and seeing how she was doing toward reaching her goal, which she did. Reading and keeping up with this really motivated me, so I decided that I would set a new goal for myself. My personal challenge is to hike a total of 40 miles during the month of July. This cannot include walking at any of our local parks, but rather has to be mountain hiking up and down hills, so most of this will probably be at Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock. I started hiking more over the last few months, but after breaking a rib I slacked off for a while. Now it's time to begin serious preparation for my backpacking trip planned for next June.

I will update this blog every time I complete miles with the date and location. I hope to do more than 40, but I have to get in at least that much. At the end of this month, I'll decide what my goal for August will be. So, here I go.

2.4 miles - 07/05/08 - Pilot Mountain

Hey there, thank you sooo much for the goodie. Soon as I can breathe IN all the way, I'm gonna inhale their sweet scent! :)

So you're gonna hike 40 miles up and down hills? I will be truly impressed. Imma watch, cuz you're gonna do it.

Don't wipe out, though, okay? Cuz it doesn't feel very good.

YOU GO GIRL!!! You've already got 5% done!

I think this is a great challenge. Lucky you living near mountians where you can actually take a proper hike. I live in the city with no mountains nearby to hike so it will be neat to see your progress.

I think this is a great personal challenge! Good for you. I'm excited to follow this! If you have a little digital camera, you should take pictures for me : )

I don't know your area and would love to live vicariously through you!

We did an 18 miler in our chaparral area this past weekend that was beautiful. One area you wind through this manzanita grove that is so incredible. I took pictures, I'll try to post them this week, if you're interested.

Take care,

Carol

emoticon on setting monthly goals for yourself. I would rather compete against myself than others sometimes. I always try to be better than I was before. Good Luck on reaching your goals. I know you will do it and have fun at the same time. emoticon
