Oprah and Staff goes Vegan for a Week

Wednesday, February 02, 2011

So yesterday Oprah's show featured Kathy Freston and her new book about eating and being Vegan. It was quite thought provoking and certainly (IMO) worth seeing. I am a Newbie to Vegan - about 3-1/2 months and really loving it.

I was saddened by the slaughter house footage, I cried and cringed and nearly lost my lunch during the skinning and chain saw butchering. They didn't show the actual killing, but it was a humane (as much as it can be) facility and the cows are kept calm and are rendered incapable of pain by knocking them senseless with a 4 inch being driven into the back of their skull a moment before they are killed.

I was very disappointed with the shopping trip to Whole Foods. Kathy loaded up the Harpo employee's cart with all kinds of prepackaged, processed crap. I keep a box of Boca Burgers and a box of "Chicken" Veggie Patties in my freezer for convenience, but I only use those products once or twice a week.

I eat fresh fruits and veggies, beans and legumes, whole grains like quinoa and black rice, sweet potatoes and nuts. I use almond milk and rice cheese to limit my soy intake.

I was impressed with the Harpo staffers for trying something so beyond their comfort zone. They deserve a lot of credit. Many of them lost weight and felt better physically and spiritually. Everyone is different and should do what is right for them.

I was glad to see the Vegan lifestyle in the spot light and for me personally - I feel better in body, mind and soul since I went Vegan.

What did you think of the show ?

I liked the show because lets face it- Oprah has a lot of power. Plus there were a few people who said they were going to stay vegan. I was also surprised that she went to the meat substitutes so quickly!! I would prefer a black bean chilli to a veggie ground round chilli any day, She should have shared good recipes instead!

I didn't see the prog but it's good there's a way of doing it that doesn't involve lots of expensive pre-packaged stuff. Did you start into it gradually, or just dive in? I know when I eat more veg and less cheese emoticon I can digest more easily and the whole system speeds up. Does the diet make you feel less sluggish?

The slaughter house footage was hard to watch even realizing it was one of the better places... I have lived all over the world and seen butchers in places like the Middle East and the eastern Mediterranian - this was very clinical in comparison...
I am not an Oprah fan at all and I thought the show was not nearly as informative as it could have been. I agree on the shopping trip ... it was a bit like watching my DH filling the cart at the health food store with organic junk... it's still junk!
Now we live in Mexico and processed food is very expensive - eating fresh is the way we eat and I must admit that catching my own fish made for a very nice dinner.

Arrest made in the DB case from my last blog

Saturday, January 01, 2011

The local police arrested 3 young men in the case of the DB that my son found on Tuesday night. Three local young men robbed the victim and he was somehow dragged by their vehicle (the Chevy SUV my son saw speeding away). Because the robbery was premeditated and resulted in the death of the 17 yo victim (who's name is Santiago) they are being charged with 1st degree murder.

What a tragic waste of 4 young lives. It's so very very sad.
I continue to give thanks that my son was not there 2 minutes sooner to witness the death or perhaps be a victim himself in some way.

Somehow, I missed this earlier. I'm glad they caught the people who did this. It is tragic any way you look at it. All those lives wasted. Will your son have to testify about seeing the suv swerve around the corner? I'm just amazed that the police caught them. That's just incredible.

So glad your son is safe it's getting to be a tougher world to survive in for everyone. We were robbed this year and always thought we'd never have anything stolen let alone have the garage and cars cleaned out. I'm so glad to know your son is safe. I worry about both my kids all the time. Take care of him and let's hope the justice system deals with the killers.

I'm glad that they were able to catch them so quickly. I'm sure the information your son gave was helpful to them. It is sad that 4 lives are ruined. But I know, if I were you, I would have been very anxious until they were caught. I'm sure you will sleep better tonight knowing they are not on the loose causing more violence.

Found a Dead Body - REALLY !

Thursday, December 30, 2010

On Tuesday night, DH & I & DS (my 21 yo son) were at dinner with friends. We all left at about 10:45 and DS said he was going to visit a friend from high school who lived close by.

At about 11:30 we get a phone call from him that he won't be home for several hours because he is not allowed to leave the crime scene. DS FOUND A DEAD BODY on the side of the road in front of his friend's house!

A young man (we later found out he was only 17) was lying at the side of the road. His head was in a large pool of blood and he had been shot in the head!

On his way into the neighborhood, DS saw a dark Chevy SUV peeling around the corner toward him and he was almost hit (which is why it made an impression). Investigators think the person(s) in that vehicle dumped the body and sped away.

Now this is in a very nice area of an upper middle class neighborhood in Average Town, USA where people with kids and dogs are out in the street and unafraid.

I am incredibly grateful to God (Fate or the Universe) for watching over my DS that night. A few minutes earlier and he could have been caught in a very bad place at a very bad time. As it is, he will always see that young man lying dead in a pool of blood in the gutter.

Please keep that young man's parents in your prayers. I can not even imagine losing a child to violence that way - it's so very sad.

So sorry to hear of this horrible thing for your son! I'm glad he was not there moments earlier.

It seems like a dark Chevy SUV could be anything. There must a million of them in S. Fla. I hope the police are able to piece something together for the victim's family.

I'm sure it's little consolation for them, but, the family must be thankful for your son being alert enough to pay attention to the SUV. At least they have hope that the murderer will be caught. I'm sorry that this tragedy happened but also for your son being dragged into it too. And they wonder why Mom's worry!

Eating Vegan at Outback Steakhouse :)

Saturday, December 18, 2010

Tomorrow is Brad's Birthday and I wanted to take him to dinner at the restaurant of his choice. Brad is a real Meat and Potatoes type of guy and he chose Outback Steakhouse.

I've been eating a plant based diet for about 8 weeks now and I've been to several restaurants, but none as blatantly carnivorous as Outback. I was a tad worried, but soon discovered there was no need to be. I told the server right away that I was vegan and she said one of the waitress was too and would go talk to her about what my options were. he returned right away and suggested a salad meal as well as 2 pasta dishes. In the end, I went with sautéed veggies (no butter) with a plain baked sweet potato and a house salad (no cheese). They seasoned the veggies and grilled them up for me, the manager came out to be sure the meal worked for me and everyone was so nice and very concerned about me. I was really quite impressed. I wouldn't hesitate to return anytime my hubby wants a fat juicy steak.

All in all, it was a really nice evening that ended up with a walk around the mall where he bought 2 gifts for me even though it's his birthday! He is such a good man and I am very lucky to have him. Thank you sweetheart and Happy Birthday - I Love You :)

I was wondering how your change in diet was working for you ... obviously well. And more and more restaurants are carrying vegetarian dishes these days.

I hope all is well and that you have a fantastic and safe holiday season.

Why a Christmas Tree is Better Than a Man

Wednesday, December 08, 2010

9. A Christmas tree is always erect.
8. Even small ones give satisfaction.
7. A Christmas tree stays up for 12 days and nights.
6. A Christmas tree always looks good - even with the lights on.
5. A Christmas tree is always happy with its size.
4. A Christmas tree has cute balls.
3. A Christmas tree doesn't get mad if you break one of its balls.
2. You can throw a Christmas tree out when it's past its 'sell by' date.
1. You don't have to put up with a Christmas tree all year.
