Dasani Half Marathon - February 15, 2014

Sunday, February 16, 2014

On February 15th I ran...well actually walk/ran my first half marathon by myself! During the whole race I listened to my sister tell me that I could do it....I just kept replaying her voice in my head.

On Thursday ...I picked up my t-shirt, mini backpack, socks and bib! Lots of cool stuff at the expo and I even found a shirt that I think they printed just for me which is at the end of this blog!

I love the theme of this race...Run with the Pack....this is a close up of the t-shirt

Saturday morning was cold (for me) and rainy....and VERY windy....we were lucky the rain ended early but it never did warm up. The wind was brutal and I kept hoping that it would be at my back when we turned around at the halfway mark but that never happened. Good thing is I would rather have a slightly chilly race than a hotter than usual.

The photo is my view of the crowd!

And then we are off......

The group of runners on the other side of the road...are all the people way ahead of me! They already reached the halfway mark. There was even a guy carrying a flag the whole way!

Market Common was the halfway point

That's the end of the race on the other side of the road.....boy did I feel good because it was a good distance behind me!

Around mile nine...started getting tired, feet really hurting ...then I saw this sign and thought of my Vikings and knew I had no choice but to finish the race!

We ran on Ocean Blvd which was really nice to see the ocean between all the hotels.

Finally got closer to Myrtle Beach wheel which meant the finish was soon!

Finally done...a nice couple from Columbia took my photo...tired but standing!

My time - 3:44:37
Pace 17:08
I was 2864th out of 2900 runners which made me feel great, I wasn't even close to last!

The medal was awesome!!!! I will be doing this race again!

This is the T-shirt that I had to buy at the expo....because for me

I love reading about half marathons because I'm looking to run my first in a couple of months. You did a great job describing yours and the pictures were great. I'm not sure I'll be up to taking pictures while moving. :-)

The shirt that you bought is PERFECT! One of the reasons I want to do a half is for the bling. That medal that you got is a great one.

Fantastic job with your pace and your place!!!

My Anchor

Saturday, July 06, 2013

This week ...we are talking about anchors with the Pink Vikings which I decided to share my anchors.

What is an anchor??? This is from Weight Watcher which I found was the best description and I love the concept ....

Anchoring is an effective strategy you can use to connect with positive memories and feelings that can restore your confidence, determination and belief in yourself.

When sticking to the plan is tough, that's when you need Anchoring, a process for creating cues and triggers to remind yourself of your weight goal and the inner resources you have to achieve it.

You use Anchoring every day. When you hear a song that makes you smile because you associate it with a certain memory, that's an anchor to that memory.

Anchoring can help you by reminding you of a particular inner resource you may need to connect to when you're having a hard time.

An anchor can be anything you choose, anything you associate with those power-boosting emotions: sights, sounds, smells, textures, tastes, people, places or things.

I loved this concept so much that I have several anchors...

First is one that I discussed with Elle before this current voyage....I bought two small jars, at first I bought a HUGE jar and some colored glass stones, pretty pink, white and red.

Each white stone was a pound and when I put them in the BIG jar ...all 50 stones barely covered the bottom of the jar. I thought 50 pounds was soooo much more and decided the BIG jar would not do. Fifty pounds is lots to me so just having it barely cover the bottom was not acceptable. So I found two small jars and decorated them.

One labeled - Pounds to Lose and the other Pounds Lost!
White stone = 1 pound
Pink stone = 5 pounds
Rose stone - 10 pounds
Each time I lose weight I move the stones from one jar to the other, gaining means moving stones back.

I really like looking at my jar and seeing the stones in the Lose jar! Once done, I plan to keep the jars around as a reminder of my efforts!

My second anchor is a rubber band ball which I put a rubber band on the ball each time I workout ....I LOVE seeing this ball get bigger and bigger showing that I am no longer a couch potato!

Kinda nice coming back from a run or workout knowing I can add another band to my ball. It also reminds me to workout because look how much I have already done...so I can't stop now!

My final anchor...I just picked up this last weekend at the Air & Space Museum in DC. I found the motto from Apollo 13 space mission...

This motto pretty much summed up my feelings that failure is not an option for me either. I bought ....actually my nephew bought me the magnetic and coffee cup with the motto. I will be bringing the mug to work to remind me about my mission to reach goal.

Almost forgot this anchor...which is a workout top I will be wearing when I get to goal. I have it hanging by my bed.

Once again, Betty, you rock. Love the stones and the jars. I want to do that too, but I could never make mine look as good as yours. So...when can I expect to receive my jars in the mail?

Washington DC Trip - June 30, 2013

Tuesday, July 02, 2013

My sister and I planned a trip to see the Hungarian Festival in Washington DC - June 28 - Jun 30th! What worked out was that my birthday was June 30th so this year I celebrated with my sister and nephew.

My sister arranged for us to stay at the hotel where my nephew is in management...the Capital Liaison Hill. Here is my room

View from my room..

Roof top garden and pool...

This is how close we were to the Capital....

Walked by the Capital each morning and it was just amazing...

The first day was the Hungarian Festival, Natural History Museum and White House...we walked so much that day! But the day was perfect...not a cloud in the sky and not super hot either.

Walking to Hungarian Festival on the Mall

Leather work was amazing

Hungarian dancers and we even danced with them later...

Highlight of festival was this Hungarian Puli made from sticks..

More walking to Washington Monument and the White House..

We visited the museums...Natural History which is totally amazing...never saw so many dinosaurs and exhibits.

My sister and I stopped outside the American Indian Museum to have this photo taken.

The we headed out to little Czechoslovakian restaurant with my sister, my nephew and my older nephew's girlfriend Carrie!

After dinner my nephew took me on a night time drive to see all the monuments.....so beautiful!

The next day started with a walk/run to Lincoln Memorial from our hotel at 5:30! I wanted to start at 5am...but my sister reminded me that this is DC so maybe running while dark not such a great idea. The second day was more cloudy...and some rain...but still loads of fun!

Walk/Run from hotel to Lincoln Memorial - My Birthday Run
6/30/2013
Time 1:40:20
Distance 5.28 miles

Lincoln Memorial

Me at the top of the stairs...not bad for a 58 year old!

Lincoln and view from Lincoln to Washington Memorial

Walk by the Korean Memorial

View from Washington Memorial back to Capital...yes we ran that part!

Rest of the day was Space and Air Museum, some more at the Hungarian festival, American Indian Museum and Botanical Gardens

Me with the Enterprise

American Indian Museum had a special exhibit with these amazing dolls!

This was one of my favorite sculpture

We stopped by the Hungarian festival to watch the dancers and take our picture by the Puli...

My sister, nephew and me....by the Puli

Had a wonderful dinner at a Mexican restaurant....and made a final stop at Jefferson Memorial...

My sister and I walking up to the memorial.

Had a great trip with my sister and nephew....amazing time and got to see so much in such a short time. Best part was LOTS of sister time!

Love your pictures! Wish I would've known about the Hungarian Festival, I work in DC (two blocks from the White House) and I always look for interesting places to walk. In fact, I've walked to all of the places that you have pictures of above. Y'all did quite a bit of exercise, especially getting from your hotel to the Lincoln Memorial. You would have been fine running in the dark in that part of DC (the very touristy part). In fact, there are a number of boot camps that get out and run around the city at that time in the morning. Glad you enjoyed your trip!

We had a Baby shower at for a our fitness director and I was charged with helping with decorations. So I made a Diaper Tricycle and Watermelon Carriage filled with fresh fruit....both were a hit and thought I would share!

Now here are a few pictures of where I run in the morning.....so lucky to see some of the most beautiful sunrises

2. Pink hair band is maybe not the right look yet
3. Side view is the most truthful looking
4. Touches of blue look really good

This race was better and my time was 1:26 faster than last race. Also realized that I do look better without glasses....weight needs to go but I like this look better :)

The race took place at Broadway at the Beach....which is was fun to run by all the shops and amusements....even an upside down house!

Finished 719th out of 1,112 Runners

The race was amazing and packed....would you believe 5,500 runners! We arrived early at 5am to get a good parking spot which was about a mile from the race....nice warmup!

We took some pre-race photos ....

This is part of my running club from work

Our MC....a little odd but he was full of energy!

My running buddy Sally and me before the race. I got her started in running and now she passes me!!! I'm working on catching up...

Walking to our corral before the race....the sun is just rising!

This is the rest of our group ...in the corral waiting for the race to start

And we are off.....

This was what was waiting for us at the end to present the DIVA medal....

After race everyone hung out for a while ....

Our group shared a glass of champagne....

Just before the race finishes, we get a boa & tiara....then right after going over the finishing line a very cute surfer gives you a medal and a rose....then a glass of champagne. Here I am after the race .....finally done!

Finally....my DIVA loot from the race...

The DIVA medals.....this year was the 5K smaller medal but next year I'm getting that big one!

Little River Rotary Club 5K Race - 5/11/2013
Time 45:00 Pace 14:29

This race had hills which is something I usually never run ....most my courses are super flat. This is our club photo for the race....which many of our members missed due to overtime at work and it's getting pretty hot here. Which the temperature was in the high 70's and pretty muggy!

We are all lined up ready to take off

One of the streets ...

Here I am just jogging along..

Everyone gathered by the old oak tree to wait our results!

Military Appreciation 5K Race - 5/25/2013
Time 43:24 Pace 13:59
Finished 3rd in my age group!

Last race this spring ....really nice run along Ocean Drive and then down the boardwalk! I thought it was going to be hot but the weather cooled down and it was in the 60's during the race.

Here are some photos of the race route on the boardwalk...and yes, it is even more beautiful than the pictures

This my fellow club members posing with our medals! Yes...I got 3rd place in my age group!!!

emoticon
Wicked Hot 5K Race - 9/8/2013
Time 43.04 Pace 14:09
Huntington State Park

First race of the fall was at Huntington State park and we ran on the road for about half the race, then a trail and finally the beach. The race was at 7:30 and it was a beautiful morning. The name of this race fit it almost perfectly....instead of Wicked Hot, it should have been Wicked Hard! As the weather was prefect but my gosh running in the sand was HARD!

We checked out the beach before the race..

Here I am with my running buddies....before the race.

Starting line

Here I am at the start of the race

Running through the wood on a narrow trail was interesting especially the sandy parts, low branches and little hills. I am so used to running on flat surfaces!

The final part was the hardest running on deep sand to the beach and then finally the beach but during high tide so the sand was still soft. Really worked the legs today! Decided that this was one Wicked Race!

Close up of me with my running buddies!

Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon - 10/20/2013
Time 3:20:32 Pace 15:19
2642th of 2758
Myrtle Beach SC

This surfing themed half marathon, with its surfboard finisher medals and surf style bands. We start at the Mall, run along a main street parkway and end with over 5 miles of oceanfront running!

Two days before the race I picked up the tech race shirt....love the beach theme and my bib...all during the race I could not figure out why people were yelling..GO Betty, you can do it...how did they know my name....LOL...it was on my bib!

Night before the race ....got all my stuff ready...

This is me before the race....we arrived at 6am which was a good thing as it got super crowded with 2758 racers! We even had some rain before the start time of 7am! But is was a comfortable lower 60's with a nice ocean breeze and cloudy for most of the race!

Starting line....

My view of the crowd before the race..

and we are off....

This is the finish line....

And most important of all...our medals!!!!

My medal....and it hanging proudly next to my medal from last year!

Great Race!!!
