Thoughts for Today

Sunday, January 26, 2014

WOW! My last blog was in September, 2013. Time to get back on track.
I have been sick with colds on and off since my last blog. I believe it is the weather here in the Carolina's. It can be in the 70's one day and the next day in the 20's. I certainly miss my FL weather. Temps are mostly the same all year round except about now. I saw the temps were down around 30 degrees. Well, it appears I am sick again.
I have been enjoying a much needed restful weekend.
I took an off day from fitness yesterday and my husband cooked.
It was sweet of him but I think I better take over. My mother and I have dietary
needs, she is diabetic and I have food allergies. When I was working and he was cooking I gained over 50 pounds within a year. He is a bread and pasta person, which I can not eat. Food allergies, bloat and weight gain. I am more low carb, (healthy carbs and non processed foods and he is low fat, quick and easy processed meals.
I love my fresh fruit and veggies. It is the thought that counts, but after almost 30 years of marriage, I have learned I need to keep control in the kitchen. I don't want to gain back all that weight. It has taken over a year just to loose 25 lbs. It's amazing how easy it is to put it on and not in loosing..

Happy Sunday! Watching the Church morning shows this morning..

How sweet that your husband cooked. Sounds like he and my hubby probably got their cooking lessons in the same place. But it does make for a nice treat, if you can stomach it! Lol!

It's great to get back in the saddle. Blogging is an excellent way for self-monitoring. When you verbalize it, it becomes reality.

I had a much needed break from making dinner. My DH found a recipe for a seafood chili! He did it in the slow cooker, and we all could not wait to try it, as it smelled so good. He did not disappoint us.

There was a time when his cooking was not so healthy, but we are learning together.

Enjoy the break from the kitchen every now and then. You deserve it too!!!

Glad to see you taking control in the kitchen. Have you seen that new vegetti thing. It is supposed to cut veggies like zucchini into pasta style dishes. Looks cool. I think I would like the kitchen more if I had one of those small TVs in there.

Your husband eats kind of like mine only mine doesn't really watch the fat. He is getting better but is a long way from being as watchful as I am though lately even I haven't been very watchful. I agree that it is extremely hard to lose that which was so easy to gain. Great job on losing that 25!

Setting October Goals

Monday, September 30, 2013

My goal for the month of October is to reach 9 miles running. My son will be visiting from FL and hopefully I can get him out with me to run around the lake. He was born here in The Carolina's and our 1st house use to back up to this lake. That is where and when I started running over 23 years ago. But when we moved to FL when he was 2 years old, was the first time I ever did a race, The Gasparilla 15 K Long Distance in Tampa, FL and met all my Sunshine Running Buds. Sure wish they were here. I have been here now for 3 years and have not really connected with anyone with the same interest in running. I am so restricted being a 24/ 7 caregiver, I just go when I have the opportunity.
I also have a goal with my Fitness Cardio and Weight training. My Fitness Minutes this month I would like to achieve 2500 minutes,. That is including my running minutes. I would like to loose 10 more pounds by Thanksgiving. That would be a year since I restarted my journey. So far I have lost close to 30 pounds of the 50 I had gained after surgery.

Take care and wishing all a Great Week and the Start of a new month!

Congratulations on your 30 pound loss so far.

Your October plan sounds marvelous. Knowing how the caregiver life can be, I know you can't wait to see your son. I love when my parents come to visit me and we get to do some things together.

Good luck with your goals this month. If you need me to help you out, just let me know!!

What a coincidence, Sharon! I'm training for the Pretty in Pink 15K on Oct 13! My running partner, the one I've paced for 2 races now, asked me to pace her. I using long slow distances with fartleks to get my endurance, pace, and speed up. It's working pretty good! We can do this!

I just had an idea. How about the 20 in 90 team support you on that goal and those of us who can will try and join you on the 10 lbs. by Thanksgiving. since I fell way short on the 20 in 90 I would love to give it another shot and try 10 lbs. by Thanksgiving. What do you say?

Happy Thursday! Almost Friday!

Thursday, August 08, 2013

emoticon Yesterday I had a full day of Fitness. I finished my 60 day Challenge with my buddy in Hawaii, Hard Core work out 60 minutes and his Cardio online TV 22:37 minutes...
Later in the afternoon took mom out for a 2 mile Run/ Walk, and made it up the big hill running and half way up struggling like a stair stepper pushing 135 lbs. It felt good to accomplish that goal of climbing the hill. I could only handle going once around the lake after that challenge but did mostly running avoiding bumps. Don't want to scare my Dear Mom.. emoticon emoticon
I will try to get out again on Friday no later than 3 PM. Takes more time packing the car, wheel chair and all. I sure miss FL where all I had to do was walk out the door. Living 1 mile away from Tampa Bay and so many Parks. They knew me quite well at the Safety Harbor Spa along my route and the Beautiful Safety Harbor Marina.

Today I did a small Jump start Cardio workout, just enough to get me going. I will be taking a rest day today and will be ready to start another challenge.

Wishing everyone a great week!

My Weight Lose Journey

Friday, July 12, 2013

I did not take a before picture back in November when I started back to my weight lose journey with Spark People because I was really mad at myself for gaining weight. I had been at my goal weight for several years and with my Life Journey taking me away from My Sunshine State and Running Buds I let Depression take hold, which lead to weight gain. I stopped running after having surgery and I think my metabolism had a hard time adjusting. I think I was gaining about 5 lbs a week which made me even more depressed. After getting on the scale last year after Thanksgiving, I said no more. I guess that was my AHA moment to get back on track. So now I have lost 23 pounds and want to at least loose 17 more. I still have not been able to get my running motivation back but have at least increased my fitness minutes to about 60 - 80 minutes a day and taking rest days. I use to run about 6 - 9 miles a day with a long run on Saturdays. I still plan to get back to running and I signed up for a race in FL next year as my goal, push motivator. Today will be kick boxing and some Cardio. It will be a Rainy weekend so mostly indoor work outs. TGIF!

What happened to Spring??

Thursday, April 11, 2013

Last week I was complaining about this past Winter being so cold and being cooped up inside for many months, well now this week the temps have been climbing to the mid 80's and may even get close to 90 degrees North of us in DC. Last week we had freezing temps with possible sleet... Go figure??? What happened to Spring??? I guess there is no such thing around this part of the country....
I am a FL Gal who moved to NC to care for my elder mother. I have been going through many adjustments being in a new area of the Country and also a 24/7 caregiver. I was so spoiled by living a mile from Tampa Bay and only 20 minutes from the Beaches. I could just walk out my door and go for a beautiful scenic early morning run along the Bay anytime of the day and feel safe. I guess that's where my old town got it's name, Safety Harbor. I knew just about everyone out there and picked up runners along the way. The people at the Safety Harbor Spa knew me quite well too, since I always stopped inside for a water break etc....
Since being cooped up this winter, I started getting serious with Spark People once again around Thanksgiving recording my meals in the Food Tracker, my weight and measurements and also my workouts in the Fitness Tracker. I joined many challenges that are very helpful in my daily workout routines and every now and then, weather permitting would get outside for a walk /run. About 2 years ago, I was running up to 18 miles for my long run training for long Distance before I had an operation. This was two years ago, so I should be able to start up a running routine again... But being away from it for so long has made it hard to get back to.. Funny thing is, I love running and am very competitive. It just is not the same though, since my Sunshine Running Buds are not here. I just got so use to running with my group of friends always in training. I am so restricted now because I just can't get out and be gone for so long away from my mother. She is wheel chair bound and can't get around like she could when I first came up here. I saw an article about a man who runs the Boston Marathon every year and has a disabled adult son that he takes out in a special wheel chair made almost like a jogging stroller. I think this would be a great idea if I could ever find something like this. I have taken my mother out for walks but the wheel chair does not have great shocks on the wheels so it makes her ride slightly bumpy.
Today's plan is to do a few of my in door work outs in Hawaii, makes me feel at home being on the beach with Palm Trees and finishing up Coach Nichole's Challenge Jump into Spring. I also have been doing her Rise and Shine Challenge, which I most definitely am an Early Bird Early Riser.
Thank You Spark People! Even being cooped up this Winter I have manged to loose 17 pounds so far and it is because of this program, support from my Spark Friends and many Spark Challenges. emoticon

Well, in Michigan the temps are still in the 30s so I'm envying you. :) I'm walk/running--and even that has my knees sore today, but like you, I love to run. It just doesn't feel like I've gotten a good workout if I don't run.

Have you tried getting a gel cushion for her wheelchair? That will help with the jarring on the bottom and will protect her from getting sores too. The wheelchairs are petty durable and some are made of steel (heavy) and some are made of aluminum too(light).

This winter was unusually cold and long. It's not always like this! There is usually a *spring* instead of going from winter to summer!

Don't worry, it won't be long until we're complaining about how many consecutive days over 90F. Meanwhile, enjoy the yellow pollen season! It lasts about 10 days or so.

You might try running at some of the smaller lakes around here that have a 2-4 mile paved trail around them. Many have a shelter or other gathering area where mom can sit and enjoy the weather, ducks, the view, people watching, reading, etc., while you can run some laps and check on her each lap. I know where a bunch are in southwestern Wake County...wish I knew more about the northern area. It gets you both out for an enjoyable time.

Wow, you have your work cut out for you. I hope you have a good relationship with your mother. It can be hard even when we love people we care for. Does your community have any services that might give you a break periodically? I'm sure there must be online communities for caregivers that might offer support and be knowledgeable about how to find good equipment, too. You deserve to find something so that you can both get out and about!
