Genetics

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

When I was in my early 20's my mother warned me about my weight (after my first child) noting that I could have diabetes. I was so frustrated at her for that...I thought she was wishing that bad luck on me (I know crazy thinking right). Well, what my mother failed to tell me was that I predisposed to diabetes because we have a family history of diabetes on both my mother and father's side of the family. Additionally, she didn't tell me that weight gain is a usual trigger for diabetes. Fast forward 15 years and here I am with diabetes (brought on by weight gain). Another think I didn't find out until recently is that congestive heart failure is a problem in my family as well. I wondered why I have so much water retention. If I don't take my medicine, I can gain up to eight pounds of water weight. That is where I am today.

It is very discouraging to battle multiple genetic conditions that not only can be life threatening, but wreak havoc on your mental state. It can cause depression at times. I have to work really hard physically, mentally and emotionally to stay positive. Spark People really helps me with this battle. I love reading the blog posts and the tracking charts help me see my progress and keeps my goals at the forefront of my mind.

Destined to Succeed

Monday, June 20, 2011

Wow, it is funny how life can dish up obstacles when you are determined to achieve a particular goal. I recently confirmed my commitment to lose at least 3 pounds per week. Well, needless to say I have had challenges after challenges but I will not give up. I realize it takes small steps before the sprint actually begins so I am in it for the long haul.

I WILL REACH MY GOAL! I will be a stronger and more confident person as a result of these challenges.

New Commitment

Good morning SP Family!

I am so happy to declare a renewed healthy lifestyle goal. I looked at myself in the mirror this morning and last night and was not totally unhappy with the reflection that I saw. For this I am truly grateful because for so long I was repulsed by my reflection and I felt guilty for feeling that way. Now I can look at myself and note the areas of improvement even while noting areas that I still have to work on. This is a milestone!

I am dedicated to success and am working to lose at 3 pounds per week. I realize this is a difficult goal given my current lifestyle (busy with work and school) but I think I can accomplish it with discipline and honesty. So with that said, I will begin my journey to a healthier life. This translates to a stronger body, more positive outlook on life and my abilities, and a happier disposition.

Onward and Upward!

Volunteering and Finding Your True Happiness

Thursday, June 09, 2011

Good morning SP Fam!

I read the SP article on volunteering this morning and I felt guilty because I have not contributed to helping my community lately. I have been busy with school and work and have lost touch with my personal pledge to give back to my community. That is going to change.

Volunteering is important for many reason as noted in the article, personal satisfaction from helping, opportunity to learn and grow, realize a different perspective on life issues. There are many good reasons to volunteer and oftentimes you will find that it is something that you enjoy and will continue doing.

I pledge to volunteer my time and skills to an organization in my community and to continue doing so. It is the least that I can do to effect positive change in my community.

"be the change you want to see in the world - Mahatma Gandhi.
