Rain - are you committed?

Friday, February 21, 2014

It was raining during my walk today. It had stormed earlier and now it was just drizzling. My son didn't think another thing of it and put on his boots, I reminded him to put on his raincoat. Personally I think the rain added some character to his walk today. I also put on my raincoat and we headed out.
As I was walking the track this afternoon, I was doing some reflective thinking. Two of my friends declined to walk today due to the rain. I only thought of the rain, not as a hindrance but only what tools I made need to walk in it, then I added my rain coat. That's it - small adjustment.
I could have easily considered staying home and doing a fitness DVD, or heading to the gym if I had a membership. Any of these ideas would have been acceptable in my eyes.
Are you committed to your program? What boundaries or guidelines do you set for yourself? Do you consider alternative plans or tools when you hit a road block?

Great way to not let something stop you. today I left my shoes at home and I want to do a fitness class after work. Well I bought a pair of shoes over lunch so i can still go. Where there is a will there is a way.

I'm still learning and making adjustments! I realized this walking plan succeeded in keeping me walking during the winter months, spending time with the kids & other families and I reached my goal of our family participating in the Bridge Walk. I loved the interaction with others. I also learned that more people equals different walking paces!
So I'm adjusting....this cannot be my only walk of the day! For this season of winter, it worked great. However moving forward, I need to make some adjustments! This morning (as the weather warms up a little) I returned to taking my early morning walk alone. I will continue to walk this afternoon with friends. I may set up cones along the walking track this afternoon. This way I can set up some interval training - running or jogging every other cone. I think the kids might have some fun with this too.

Walking Plan 2014 update

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

It's been over 6 weeks already! I can't believe it. The plan has been working great! One family joined us immediately. The kids quickly got use to the routine and the daily expectation of walking. We started bringing soccer balls too to work on skills or play soccer afterwards. Several weeks into it, another family joined us. Interestingly, over time, the group has gotten more consistent. We only missed 2 days in the 6 weeks and they both were due to inclement weather (1 of the days, the schools actually closed due to weather). On those days, I walked at home to Walk Away the Pounds. My son joined me. =)

Additionally, I had another friend approach me about walking. She couldn't join us for our walking group however we made weekly date to walk the bridge and kept our dates.

We did the community bridge walk as a family! My husband committed to joining us. However the day before the walk, my daughter sprained her ankle, so we were one family member short.

Forming the walking group was well worth it. We are still walking. I continued to walk through winter without paying any gym fees, my children joined me, we completed the community bridge walk and I had some great company!

Thank you for your kind words and support! I was happy to just create a routine, bring the kids along, mix it up a little, get some support & continue walking through the winter months! =) We did have 2 end goals - keeping the kids in shape for the upcoming soccer season and completing the Bridge Walk as a family.

What a great idea! I don't have anyone around here to invite, but DH and I take the dog and sometimes a grandchild to walk. I'm just getting restarted (again) so am not pushing myself too hard. Congratulations on your success!

Walking Plan 2014

Saturday, January 04, 2014

Happy New Year - 2014! Our community has a walk in a little over 6 weeks, so I put out an email to some friends asking if anyone would like to form a team. I then also asked who would like to start walking beginning Monday - naming a location and a time - Monday through Friday daily whoever can attend. I hope to have some takers! I have a plan, put out a request for supporters and have an end goal! This might be a great walking start for the new year!
I've had a walking buddy in the past but she recently moved. =(
For those of you that do, be grateful!
For those of you that don't, consider asking someone, joining a current group or making one!
Last year I joined a gym for the months of January & February to get me over the hump of the cold outside. However I realize if I have some takers on the walking plan, I won't need to join the gym and will be saving some money! =)

Thank you Ladies for your support & encouragement!!

Pixie - I love the idea of walking and spending time with others. People are busy and walking may not be their priority. If I put it out there every so often, they know I walk. When the timing is right for them, they know they can reach out to me and join me.

Roxy - The timing just happened to work out that way. Equally important was the location, although I didn't realize it at the time. I chose a track that was centrally located and that worked in my favor. =)

Tina - Sometimes we need the support of others - a buddy system or a network of helpers/buddies. Just keep in mind YOUR why and YOUR goals in case there comes a time when your buddy's priorities change and you may have to go it alone...have your own motivation.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and encouragement!

Tweaking Along

Monday, February 04, 2013

It's amazing when you are on a roll, how you just keep tweaking along. Looking back at January, hubby lost 18 lbs! Woohoo, congratulations to him. I am so proud of him. I lost 4 lbs. I am thrilled that I did well through the holidays and we managed to get on track nutritionally in a team effort.
Looking ahead my goals this month are consistency with exercise. We are working on strength training MWF. I am planning to also go to the gym MWF for interval training on the treadmill. On T&Th I am planning to walk the bridge. There is a Bridge Walk scheduled for Feb 16th and I've committed to attending.
Also my daughter is starting to run with a running club that meets on Wed so I may sneak in an extra walk on Wed nights when I'm out there with her. It feels good to write my plan down. I encourage you to do so too.
